The original Magnum PI TV show, which ran on CBS from 1980 to 1988 and starred Tom Selleck in the title role, was a pretty big hit back in the days when there were far fewer choices and hence, much bigger audiences. Now that the Tiffany network has rebooted the Hawaii-set action-adventure series for a new generation, will it still burn up the Nielsen ratings? Will the new Magnum PI be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
A CBS crime drama, Magnum PI stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and Amy Hill. The mystery thriller centers on former Navy SEAL Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), who is back from Afghanistan and working as a private investigator. Magnum lives in a guest cottage on the Robin’s Nest estate in Oahu, where he also serves as a security consultant. With his team at the ready, a vintage Ferrari at his disposal, and his trademark aviator sunglasses, Magnum is always ready to crack the next case.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
4/16 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the Magnum PI TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season on CBS?
*1/25/19 update: CBS has renewed the Magnum PI TV show for a second season.
The new Magnum is too serious and is trying too hard. He’s nice looking though. Tom Selleck was laid back, fun, easy but got the job done.
The positive, the new Higgins is an improvement. The rest of the supporting cast is adequate, but no improvement. The issue is a “mini me” magnum trying to fill the (large) shoes of 6’4″ Tom Selleck. Since that is the titular character, I don’t see much of a future for this reboot.
Boring,the new magnum.
I really enjoy the new Magnum and the cast. I rarely watch regular tv and I DVR this show as to not miss an episode – I so hope it will be given a chance. I’m a huge fan of the old show and I love how the new one is adapted to today’s world
Am I the only one who appreciates the new Magnum PI? I am loving Jay Hernandez, enjoying the scenery and the action. With so many remakes, I find this enjoyable escapism. No one will ever take Tom Selleck’s place as Magnum just as a stepmom can never completely replace someone’s mother, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the new Magnum for what it offers.
I believe that Jay Hernandez is not a bad actor but MAGNUM PI – I really don’t think so.Why not do a reboot of CHIPS and use him as Erik Astradas character Frank Pontcherello or in Miami Vice Philip Michael Thomas character Tubbs or even Baretta Robert Blake charactor Baretta. But no MAGNUM PI! Come-on Guys, now you really made a mess here. I rather watch “Murder she wrote” while drinking a warm glass of milk. I think I look like Magnum PI. But I would have asked Uncle Tom Selleck to give me the go-ahead or THUMBS – UP… Read more »
Don’t like new Magnum PI couldn’t even watch the whole thing. Put it out of its misery
You know it’s bad when the recently widowed woman just start gossiping about a guy’s love life in the middle of a crying scene. This show without even comparing to the old one is terrible.
Hey let’s take a popular tv show from the past since we have no ideas of our own. Play music really loud and create fake action scenes like an old rusted car doing 60 off road. Blow up an armored trick with shots from a 45. Put a hot piece of ads in leotards. And we can have a tv show. I couldn’t watch it past 10 minutes.
As much as I love any show filmed in Hawaii this show has two major issues,
Much like Hawaii 5-0 reboot. First is the casting good actors, but not in The caliber of Tom Selleck, John Hillerman or Jack Lord. The second is these new shows are all action with very poor story lines. Not everything should be about terrorist Good old fashion jewel heists or kidnappings with well written story lines and problem solving skills makes a better series
Ii love Hawaii too and this show is so bad I cannot watch it. I met om Selleck in Hawaii when he filmed Magnum and he was great but this new Magnum has no charisma
Fake Magnum no thanks
painful to watch.
The real Magnum made you feel like it could happen to you , and you appreciated the big guy’s situation.
Yeah you could see yourself in those situations, like Magnum was a regular guy.
Terrible cast and no talent. Will not watch it. Jay Hernandez should go and learn how to act. Those who created the show have no idea. They ruined themselves and the show for good. Looks like Hollywood is destroying itself with untalented wannabees.
As a stand alone series (not comparing to the original), this show didn’t do enough to keep me wanting to come back. Comparing to the original, it is much worse. Not sure I can watch any more of it.
This new “Magnum” is garbage. It has nothing to do with the original other than very loosely adapting (and butchering) the premise. It should be cancelled, and a apology should be issued by CBS.
I couldn’t expect the new Magnum PI to be as good as the old, but I hoped it would be. The Hawaii Five-O reboot has been fantastic – different, but really good. The Magnum PI reboot needs a lot of work. First they are straining too hard to cover all the major items like having both men and women in the lead roles and covering the major ethnic categories. Jay Hernandez as Magnum is painful. He’s straining to be sexy and cool and it’s coming off as false. The original Magnum (Tom Selleck) character was sweet and boyish. The roles… Read more »
The show was so extremely horrible. I found myself hoping Zeus and Apollo would catch The Fake Magnum and end the show. The CGI car stunts just were not even realistic or entertaining. What are they going to do for next week’s ratings, destroy 4 ferrari’s. The Fake Magnum does not even need to wear a tigers cap cause his head sticks above the cars roof. I know its probably a pet peeve, but the fake Magnum is the same height as Rick. Pam Swarts probably nailed it on the head. Tom Selleck had the sweet boyish charm for his… Read more »
