In the fall, Anna Faris left Mom, and now, the long-running sitcom is leaving CBS. The network has announced that the comedy series is ending and that the series finale will air on Thursday, May 6th.
The Mom TV series stars Allison Janney, Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner, and Kristen Johnston. Recovering addict Bonnie (Janney) must learn to adjust to life without her daughter and former-roommate, Christy (Faris), around. With a chaotic past behind her and a newly empty nest, Bonnie focuses on her marriage to her husband, Adam (Fichtner), and on what she wants to be now that she’s finally grown up. Now more than ever, Bonnie depends on the support of her friends, including wise Marjorie (Kennedy), wealthy and sometimes misguided Jill (Pressly), overly emotional Wendy (Hall), and her foster sister, Tammy (Johnston), who was recently released from prison. Through it all, these women help each other overcome their mistakes and stay sober in the face of whatever life throws their way.
The eighth season of Mom averages a 0.62 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.07 million viewers. Compared to season seven, that’s down by 22% in the demo and down by 19% in viewership. Seven episodes have aired thus far.
Season eight marks the final year in a two-season renewal from CBS and marks the end of star Janney’s current contract. Despite Faris’ departure, the sitcom still does well for CBS and is the network’s fourth-highest rated comedy.
“For the past eight years, we’ve had the great honor to bring these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week,” said executive producers Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker, and Nick Bakay in a statement. “From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series. Whether it was the emotional reactions of the live audience on tape night inside Stage 20, or discussions at the White House regarding the opioid crisis, or the personal stories we continue to receive on social media, we take great pride in knowing Mom has positively impacted so many lives. We are forever grateful to our brilliant cast and guest stars, wonderful writers, and amazing crew for going on this journey with us.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Mom TV series? Would you have watched a ninth season or, is it time to say goodbye?
I am dyslexic. I hate to read. I rely on great entertainment.
I love this show. Please keep it on the air. Enough said!!
The series Mom just gave up after Anna Faris left the cast. I, for one, was not unhappy she was leaving as her character was somewhat “overactor”. I was looking forward to the cast resuming with possibly an add on of Bonnie’s brother to the regular cast and introducing maybe a “Mom” character for Tammy. I love all the remaining characters. Alas they piped Bonnie’s character down, the writing and creativity went belly up and I watch the new episodes with rarely a smile and never a laugh. I watch the reruns and still laugh out loud… Sorry you gave… Read more »
Tje show,is netter than ever this season. sad to see it go.
Love Mom. Makes me laugh out loud!!! Yes I would watch another season.
I am shocked that MOM has been cancelled!!! It has been a fantastic, comical, thoughful, caring show throughout all seasons. The friendship and support portrayed by each of these extremely talented women plus Adam is heartwarming and much needed in todays world. All the very best to every cast member and thank-you for your dedication to this wonderful show. You are going to be missed. Please CBS don’t cancel MOM!!!!
Still upset at this program’s being taken off the air can I think it’s because they don’t want to pay for good writers. Also reminds me of another station the people supported a space show on broadcast TV you know like rabbit ears I’m a supporter to show and then they be new to show and put it on cable TV is this where we’re going folks? Like viewing there are only two shows that I really look forward to seeing and you’re taking one of them away we in this household I’ll be on sad and wish that you… Read more »
I am deeply upset about the cancellation of Mom. I watch the show religiously and also watch repeats every day. I will miss these woman and theor true to life stories and stuggles. They are my one chance a day to truly laugh in the wake of covid. I wish you would reconsider. To all the women on the show – I love you and you will be missed.
CBS should be ashamed for cancelling the show. A funny real show that helps people versus all the smut on TV these days. I hope a decent network picks it up and shows CBS how to run a network.
Funniest show on TV and its also real! About REAL problems. What the hell is your problem, CBS??!
Bunch of morons for cancelling a great show
We look forward to the program actually build around that program to see it, if they could do it safely and do the filming and they all want to do it the show to take it off the air would be a shamefull lack of management and I lost to the show’s dedicated Watchers that love the show and at times indeed made good points.
Yes it’s our favourite show. With all the reality crap it’s good to laugh. Love Mom
I’ve been a fan of the show from the start. I’m sad I won’t see these hilarious women again. It’s nice to see a strong women’s comedy.
It’s so much better without Faris. We get to delve into many more topics with the now cast. Anna Faris wasn’t doing to much in the last season, I was wondering myself why she’s still there? I don’t want it to end!! I love the show and hate to see it gone!!
The show is still one of the best on tv. It’s a shame it’s ending to soon.
