In 2009, both Southland and Medium were cancelled by NBC but were then saved by other networks. Three long-running shows were recently cancelled last month and it looked like each had a good shot of being saved as well.
A couple weeks later, Law & Order and Ghost Whisperer have been denied a second chance and now, The New Adventures of Old Christine has as well.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows a neurotic single mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who has a hard time juggling a relationship with responsibilities at home and work. Others in the cast include Hamish Linklater, Wanda Sykes, Trevor Gagnon, Clark Gregg, Emily Rutherfurd, Tricia O’Kelley, and Alex Kapp Horner.
The sitcom has been a moderate performer for CBS from the beginning and has ended up on the bubble each year. For the past two years, ABC has been ready to pick up the show if CBS dropped it. Those were in the days when ABC wasn’t having much luck finding successful sitcoms of their own.
When CBS cancelled Old Christine this year, the alphabet network wasn’t as interested anymore because ABC already has some successful sitcoms with several new ones waiting in the wings.
This season, Old Christine aired opposite ABC sitcoms and didn’t fare very well. As a result, the network has decided not to pick up the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom for season six.
The final episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine aired on May 12th on CBS. After five seasons and 88 episodes, there won’t be a final episode to wrap up the series.
On the positive side, reruns will begin airing on Lifetime and on local stations across the country in the fall.
What do you think? Should ABC have picked up Old Christine for season six? How would you have ended the show?

YES YES YES! Christine is one of the best written comedies and has a fantastic cast. Was wondering if Julia could make the transition to a new character, which most of her Seinfeld clan were unable to do. She DID and was wonderful. And Wanda Sikes? Marvelous. ABC should pick it up!!!!!
I think it was original and different. I’m so tired of the same old same old. I find it funny Julia won an award for her character in 2009, and in 2010 CBS cancelled her show.
ABSOLUTELY “The New Adventures of Old Christine” should be picked up. It was disappointing to hear it had been canceled. NOT SURPRISING CBS.
My husband and I loved “The New Adventures of Old Christine”, This is what we hurried home for on Wednesday nights never wanting to miss and episode. “Cold Case”, another great show over no longer running, this is upsetting. For one, I always had to search for these two sitcoms never knowing the channel or time once I find them and get comfortable it was gone again. If I had trouble keeping up with them how many other viewers do you think the sitcom and network lost hum…. NOT FAIR for the sitcom or me the viewer. Some NETWORK needs… Read more »
CBS used to be my favorite network, I am very unhappy with them for canceling Guiding Light, which I watched for twenty-five years, and especially for killing Christine, which was clever and endearing. The show had a wonderful cast with good rapport. Money is always the bottom line, right? Pity I haven’t any Nielsen input
Absolutely, ABC should have picked it up…..i cant believe this is it….someone should pick it up….CW maybe!!
Anything CBS does regarding the cancellation of a good show does not surprise me. I am still bummed about the cancellation of Moonlight, the first 21st century vampire series with a wonderful, sexy cast. They canceled it right BEFORE the vampire boom hit and the fans pleaded with them but to no avail, Alec Laughlin had a winner of a show there and now they keep putting him in non-tested shows and the last one was canceled. I had just started watching Christine and really liked it, especially liked the brother. Ah well.
I was so shocked and dissapointed to hear my FAVORITE show got canceled. It seems like all the good shows end!! Now everyone is into reality tv that the great sitcoms don’t have a chance!!! I wish they would have at least showed the finale. Whats next?? Criminal Minds??? If that happens I will NEVER watch CBS again!!!
They need to leave the good shows on TV, that are really TV shows and not some stupid reality show, that follows people around who try to act natural, or survive on some island but they have a camera on them. TV is entertainment whether it be funny sitcoms Like Old Christine or Good Dram Law and Order -Boston Legal, it seems the networks never takes the complete picture into hand.

A terrifically funny and well-done show, but CBS never promoted it the way it should have. I wish ABC would have given it a second chance.
Somebody has to pick up The New Adventures of Old Christine. Julia is too good to not be on and the show has been really funny, and now that new Christine is out of her shell the show has become even better. I love that episode where old Christine gives new Christine that baby basket and they both call each other by the title of old and new christine. ABC or somebody else please pic up this show, it’s too good to be cancelled.
That just figures. None of the good CBS shows that got canceled are gonna get a second chance. Numb3rs, Ghost whisper, a few others including now Christine. WTF-EVER!!!!!!!
This was a very funny show, and I am very surprised it was cancelled. I was saddened to hear the news.
You know, the way CBS programs, it is known by all that ANY shows placed in these slots are temporary. CBS is FAMOUS for pre-empting shows for cheap special programming that, most of the time, only CBS finds these shows special. NEW CHRISTINE and GARY, UNMARRIED, were both good shows that you were never able to tell when they would be on. Sometimes, even TV LISTINGS HAD THEM BUT, CBS DID NOT. Oh well, adult swim is always on & even “KING OF THE HILL’ IS BETTER THAN CBS!
funny show but cared more about gray unmarried.
