If you were watching FOX during the Summer months, you surely saw promos for what seemed to be one of the network’s next big Fall series. So, where did it go?
New Amsterdam tells the story NYC homicide detective John Amsterdam (Nikolaj Coster Waldau). Described as brilliant, reckless and mysterious, John is also secretly immortal. He was fatally injured back in 1642 but was saved by a Native American girl’s spell. While the spell saved his life, John is doomed to watch his friends and family age and die while he remains unchanged by time. He won’t become mortal again until he’s able to find his one true love. Other series regulars include Stephen Henderson, Zuleikha Robinson, and Alexie Gilmore.
On May 11th, the series was given a 13-episode commitment. Six days later, FOX announced its Fall schedule and New Amsterdam was headed for Tuesday nights at 8pm. The romantic action series had a prominent place in the network’s promotions and was scheduled to be the lead-in for House’s fourth season premiere on September 25th.
At the July press tour, it seemed that the producers didn’t have a firm grasp on the show’s creative direction. Soon afterwards, the pilot was reportedly overhauled. On August 3rd, Amsterdam’s debut was pushed back to an unspecified midseason date. Rumors are that network execs still have creative issues with the series.
Word is that production on Amsterdam has been or will be shut down soon with just seven or eight episodes completed. This means that five or six episodes of the 13-episode order haven’t been filmed — and probably never will be.
The official word is that executives want to evaluate what’s been completed thus far before moving forward. The production halt is likely due, at least in part, to the fact that FOX is overflowing with midseason series. But, considering the network’s seeming lack of enthusiasm, it looks possible that Amsterdam could be bumped again and aired as a Summer burn-off series (ala Traveler or the second season of The Loop). Will this series about an immortal get a fair chance at life? Time will tell so stay tuned!
I think Hulu Plus should pick up the rights to ‘New Amsterdam’ , and air brand new episodes online, I bet alot more people would subscribe to them if they did that. This show had so much potential.
Oh how I miss this show and wish that something like it would come along….every new series I think oh…please be the one that can stand up to New Amsterdam….but alas….it never happens…I agree Jim, it’s just some idiot in an office deciding nope it doesnt work for us, so we aren’t going to promote it…and so the world misses out on something wonderful. But oh yeah let’s bring me another bunch of reality crap…gee, thanks so much. Because that hasn’t been overdone to hell and back….sigh….I wonder if he ever would have found true love….sigh.
yes i just started watching this show also on hulu, it was one of there recommendations, anyways i had no idea it was made back in 07-08 it was such an original and fresh show, i didnt expect it to be canceled, i am sick of all the real tv and vampire shows, why is it that all the good shows with intelligence get canceled.. The TV execs are F******G idiots for canceling this show….
I know this thread is way old. I was watching this show on hulu and just assumed that it was still going on since it was SO VERY VERY VERY VERY AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Alas, I was wrong and surprised when after the 8th episode….no more. Ok……Here’s what me and EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD scratch our head about and want to understand…..how do the ‘network executives’ (God those two words conjure up more and more hate in my heart) ..how do they make these ‘decisions’ to axe so very many GREAT series. Do we need another Ghost Hunters-type pile of steaming… Read more »
I hate you fox! You sob always do the same thing, is not the first time they lure me in with a great show such as New Amsterdam and buuum! Show is cancel! I just hope you f****rs go to backrupt for making people loose their favorite shows. Fox = S**t
Fox stop biting the hand that feeds you. If you can’t give a decent ending to one show why ever would we waste our time watching another only to see that one never have a conclusion as well? Sure it costs money to wrap up a show. But when you don’t it makes your network come off lazy, incompetent and indifferent to the consumer’s needs. Not only that it sets your next shows up for failure due to a lack of consumer trust. Spend the money on wrapping up your canceled shows and you’ll end up not having to spend… Read more »
I think New Amterdam idea was taken from Jerome Bixby’s “Man from Earth”.

Please bring back this show. My husband and I loved it and were really starting to enjoy watching it week after week. It had great suspense, it was sexy and interesting. As a history buff, I was entralled….shame on the execs who didn’t think the show deserved to stay on…
