Prodigal Son just aired its first season finale, so what’s next? Recently, creators Sam Sklaver and Chris Fedak spoke with Deadline about the future of the FOX TV show.
The thriller stars Tom Payne as Malcolm Bright, a criminal psychologist whose father is a notorious serial killer. The cast also includes Michael Sheen, Bellamy Young, Lou Diamond Phillips, Aurora Perrineau, Frank Harts, Halston Sage, and Keiko Agena.
Although FOX has not announced a season two renewal for Prodigal Son, creators Sam Sklaver and Chris Fedak do have ideas for another season. The two told Deadline they’d like to explore other characters’ perspectives:
But I also think we could see it through Jessica’s viewpoint. To a smaller extent, Gil’s. Everyone who is in Martin’s life, the idea at the core of this show is what if your father was a serial killer but I’m just as fascinated by the idea of what if your husband was a serial killer. So, I do think, we’re so blessed with Bellamy, Halston and Tom, this Whitly family, we can focus on so many aspects of them and we know that our actors can deliver with such high calibre, we can’t really do any wrong, hopefully.”
And fans don’t have to worry about Gil. Sklaver and Fedak want Lou Diamond Phillips back for season two:
From our perspective, that’s a story that we’re going to follow next season with regards to Lou. Lou Diamond Phillips is an amazing actor and national treasure, so we would be real dummies, not to bring him back for season two.”
What are the chances of a renewal from FOX? The two creators say they are “cautiously optimistic.”

I have not missed one episode of Prodigal Son. It is a great show with a wonderful cast. This is the kind of excellence to keep tv going.
Just when you think you know what is about to take place, a major twist, the likeness of being fish slapped, and your left wondering what just happened? To not renew, would be a terrible loss. Prodigal Son is an oasis of thoughtful, intelligent writing, in a sea of banality of sit coms and melodramatic police shows. There is nothing remotely akin to the show.
Prodigal Son is one of the best (if not the best) series…please renew so many of us can keep our sanity! Love all the actors!

“Prodigal son” will remain one of the most favorite TV series of mine due to its unique, psychological and personal perspective on serial killers along with the amazing acting of all characters, especially Tom Payne, Lou Philips, and Martin Sheen. I would really like to see more of them.
I love this show so they will probably cancel it. It seems like every quality show I get invested in ends up this way. It is exciting, intriguing, and wonderful. The characters are exceptional. I can’t stand these stupid shows about ex wives, ex lovers, people running around naked in the woods, etc. I like watching a show that keeps me engaged and on the edge of my seat. I think the writing is also great.
Prodigal Son is my favorite new series. It is extremely well written and the cast is extraordinary. The premise of the show was what initially what intrigued me, but the consistency of the writing and character development brought me back for more. Tom Payne and Micheal Sheen are fantastic and Lou Diamond Phillips has been one of my favorite actors since I saw him in Young Guns and Renegades and loved him in Longmire. Bellamy Young is exceptional. It would be a travesty to not renew Prodigal Son when shows like The Masked Singer are renewed.
