Schooled hasn’t received a passing grade from ABC. The network has revealed they’ve cancelled the TV show so, it won’t be returning for a third season.
A spin-off of The Goldbergs, the Schooled comedy series begins as Lainey Lewis (AJ Michalka) returns to Jenkintown, Pennsylvania after pursuing her dreams of stardom on the West Coast. She reluctantly takes a job as a music teacher at her alma mater. The cast also includes Tim Meadows, Bryan Callen, Brett Dier, and Haneefah Wood.
The second season of Schooled averaged a 0.69 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.15 million viewers. Compared to season one, that’s down by 29% and 20%, respectively. Even with the ratings drop, Schooled was still one of ABC‘s middle-of-the-road programs for the 2019-20 season.
The comedy comes from Sony TV and ABC Studios and has gone through three showrunner regimes over the course of two seasons. Schooled was created by Adam F. Goldberg and Marc Firek with the latter serving as showrunner in year one. He was replaced by Tim Doyle for year two but Doyle left before the year was out, replaced by Tom Hertz and Vanessa McCarthy. According to Deadline, that backstage upheaval may have been a factor in the cancellation.
Two other sophomore sitcoms, Bless This Mess and Single Parents, were also cancelled by ABC today.
What do you think? Did you watch the Schooled comedy series? Would you have watched season three on ABC.
Loved this show! Nothing worth while to watch anymore.
My husband and I really enjoyed this show!! We recognized that Lainey was a great character … and the actress that plays the role is awesome. The whole cast is wonderful. Just a delightful show all around. We’re hoping another network snaps this show up. MORE SCHOOLED PLEASE!!!
I love Schooled. It is dorky and goofy, so different than all the other comedies. Each character is ridiculously flawed and you can really feel their awkwardness. You can see yourself in the different characters, either in bits or in the whole of the characters. It is well put together and the cast is fantastic. I would have loved to have seen another season.
This is a great show, I am so disappointed! If anyone from ABC is listening, please reconsider!
This is such a bummer. Goldbergs was so great in the early seasons, but is now more a spoof (more like mockery) of its own self. The characters have become extremely one note and there’s hardly any actual 80s references anymore. Schooled gives us some of our favorite goldbergs secondary characters as primary characters, while also giving them more depth and relatability. I love seeing the more personal connections between characters, and more depth to the story lines. It actually even gives you the feels sometimes. Not to mention a whole new decades worth of pop culture references. Goldbergs it… Read more »
Another great show cancelled because of ABC choosing ratings over family quality shows.
Won’t miss it at all. Barely got thru one episode.
Sorry to hear Schooled was canceled. Funny show and liked the cast. Another good comedy gone with junk replacing it. Oh well
This show is so great! Please come back on a different network. We need to see how CB and Lainey work out.
What, I loved schooled. Of course if I like a show they cancel it.
I absolutely LOVED Schooled! Even outshone The Goldberg’s. Coach Mellor and Principal Glasscot together are amazing! They all played off each other beautifully, but Coach Mellor’s entire persona was tunnel visioned in a sweet crazy way and just hysterical!! I’m so disappointed.
I’m so bummed they cancelled this one. It was such a feel good family show. Didn’t really watch the Goldbergs, but I loved this one. Relatable and made you feel good. And the ending for season two… it was great! ABC should really rethink this decision
I was REALLY bummed out by the “Schooled” cancellation. Would it have hurt ABC’s bottom line by renewing all their programming? I don’t think so. I watched every cancelled program regularly with the exception of “Kids Say the Darndest Things”. That concept was trite when Art Linkletter was doing it. All things considered “Stumptown and “American Housewife” made the cut, which definitely lessens the sting of losing these very strong shows a bit.
I loved this show! It was so refreshing! It should never have been cancelled! They really need to rethink their decision.
I am sad that there won’t be a 3rd season I love this show!
