TV show description:
It’s London 1952, seven years after the end of the Second World War, and four women reunite to track down a serial killer. Using the same skills they used to break Nazi codes at the top secret Bletchley Park (which made them a crucial part of the allied war effort), the four women are also coming to terms with what is expected of them in their mundane lives.
Now a housewife and mother of two, Susan (Anna Maxwell Martin) sees a pattern emerging when a number of women are brutally murdered. She quickly enlists the help of her former colleague Millie (Rachael Stirling) who has recently returned from traveling the world. Independent, single minded and adventurous, Millie is a progressive alternative to the stereotypes of that era and helps bring the other members to the fold.
Enter youngest member Lucy (Sophie Rundle), who has a photographic memory and unique ability to process data, and their former supervisor Jean (Julie Graham) who’s now a librarian with a knack of being able to source sometimes secret information, which will become invaluable to the team.
One problem is that Susan’s unknowing husband Timothy (Mark Dexter) is becoming increasingly suspicious and frustrated with his wife’s theories as they collide with his own career ambitions.
Episode #7 — Uncustomed Goods, Part 2
Jasper’s murdered but, thanks to corruption, no action is taken by the police. To catch the criminals and stop the trafficking of girls, the ladies plan to buy contraband. Lucy is able to memorize the gang’s encrypted ledger book. They return to Bletchley Park which is now a college where Alice’s daughter is studying. They intend to take a Typex machine but find an old Enigma machine instead.
First aired: May 4, 2014.
What do you think? Do you like The Bletchley Circle TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season?
Finally a show portraying intelligent women solving crimes on their own after not-so-intelligent men decided they should go back to their kitchens! And this is a show you cancel? Bravo to the not-so-intelligent men who had a hand in this stupid decision!!
This show is absolutely wonderful–How could a show of this quality be cancelled??? With Season 2, it just seemed like the whole group gelled and I was so disappointed to find out this show had been cancelled. Bring it back, please!!
I enjoyed watching this series because it was refreshing to see extraordinary women demonstrating courage, along with their considerable intelligence, to solve complex crimes. They did not allow shortsighted male officials to discourage them. They knew they were right and so, never quit. How often do you see women depicted that way? Never.
Please bring this show back. Give us this one that’s really worth watching.
Unique UK Series I find commendable where the empowerment of women by women depicting a time when men needed women to win a World War and they do it very well for two seasons. Clearly there are many more people interested and looking forward to more seasons unless a few less intelligent men think they know better. Based upon Human History they’ve proven otherwise.
I wish I could have said this as well as you did. I absolutely agree with EVERYTHING you said and I thank you for saying it. PLEASE BRING BLETCHLEY CIRCLE BACK because as a women I want to see more of this show.
I really enjoyed this series…very well done & historically accurate…great acting…suspenseful episodes… Please bring it back with new episodes!!!
I truly enjoyed this show and hope that they will reconsider its return and as one other fan requested, with full cast.
Disappointed that the series ended. Hope it returns with full cast.
I was so disappointed to find there will not be third season. I enjoyed it immensely.
I was terribly disappointed to learn of the series cancellation. The premise was terrific and I loved the characters. Please reconsider.
I loved this serie
I loved this series. I found it on Netflix. I hope it gets picked up again for a 3rd series
I started watching this series on DVD. I watch very little TV anymore
because there are very little quality programs anymore. I did not know this was on PBS or
I would have watched it sooner. It was recommended by a friend who watches PBS shows all the time. I was starting to look for it in the paper, thinking that a 3rd season would be showing up sometime. I would have liked to watch more from these ladies and in hopes that Susan would return. I am sad that yet another quality show is gone.
I really enjoyed the series, and would love to see more. The story lines are interesting, and I could see the series developing into so much more. Would like to see the chararcter of Susan come back into it as well.
WHAT A GOOD PREMISE! WE REALLY ENJOY THIS SHOW! PLEASE DO KEEP IT ON!
The story needs several more chapters to more completely develop. These characters and the real women and men who very greatly aided the war effort have largely been forgotten by time. The Allied intelligence community got going well before the war did, in the United Kingdom, the United States, and in Canada. Obviously this continued and evolved after the war and story lines such as the Bletchley Circle can do an excellent job of illuminating this era and the changes in society as women and their roles therein evolved.
Liked the concept and a couple of episodes, but the writing was not up to British standards and I lost interest after that. Perhaps a new writing team (and better actors) would make it a more appealing series. Most British series are excellent.
