Why did ABC cancel The Kids Are Alright? Recently, network boss Karey Burke addressed ABC’s decision to end the TV show after only one season, TVLine reports.
Set in the 1970s, the sitcom centers on the Clearys, an Irish-Catholic family living on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The cast includes Michael Cudlitz, Mary McCormack, Sam Straley, Caleb Foote, Sawyer Barth, Christopher Paul Richards, Jack Gore, Andy Walken, and Santino Barnard.
During this year’s summer TCA press conference, Burke explained why ABC decided to cancel The Kids Are Alright, saying:
We looked at many measures. We looked at multi-platform viewing. We looked at social media sentiment. There did not seem to be a strong enough fan base at the time. These things always come down to business decisions, and this was a tough, tough decision.”
On Twitter, star Michael Cudlitz responded to the comment:
Seriously, @abc. Just say “no comment”. This is just rude. I apologize to the @TheKidsABC fandom on behalf of @abc. Smfh. https://t.co/qJoRzJanzE

What do you think? Are you a fan of The Kids Are Alright? Would you have watched a second season?
How they cane to this decision I’ll never understand. What I do know is that we, the fans, don’t agree! We love our show beyond measure. How about you bring it back for 2 or 3 or 4 more seasons and give us a chance to prove you wrong??
This was a great show, so in tune with how many of us grew up. But instead of producing fun family entertainment that will build loyal viewers, the networks go for gimmicks like the CBS All Access and other subscriptions. It is bad enough to pay for cable, watch the disgusting ads about drugs and personal hygiene products, without being gouged for more. I’m down to one ABC program, which means advertisers are not reaching me (and many like me), and soon they will realize there is no point in paying ABC.
We absolutely wanted more of this show and were ready for season 2, season 3, season 6, etc!
I love the show. One of the few family friendly .
We loved the show! It was funny, witty and smart. A great family show. Very sad to see this show be cancelled. Every year there seems to be fewer and fewer sitcoms that make it. Feels like the networks spend way more money and time promoting reality TV.
We loved this show. Was one of our favorites. Too bad it was cancelled.
I love this show. I don’t understand why they cancelled it.
Oh yes. Was an excellent show and ABC missed the boat. Perhaps another network can pick it up. I hope so.
Kids are alright had grit and a fun fearlessness that we haven’t seen in a major network show in many years. It’s story lines were frank and honest which is too much for the rampant hypocrisy that permeates our society today. I’m very disappointed in the cancellation but not at all surprised.
I loved the show. Would have watched 10 more seasons of it. ABC messed up. Hope someone else picks them up.
ABC cancels the wrong programs and leave trashy shows on the air. I enjoyed the program. Growing up in the mid 70’s in an Irish Catholic Family I can totally relate!
I love The Kids Are Alright! Please bring it back!!
Loved this show!!!
Please do not cancel
I absolutely would have watched a 2nd season.cudlitz is right abcs response was typical corporate bs
I would have watched a second season , i loved that show . They always cancel the good shows and leave on the dump stuff. I really hope abc or another network picks it up for a second season.
