Why did ABC cancel The Kids Are Alright? Recently, network boss Karey Burke addressed ABC’s decision to end the TV show after only one season, TVLine reports.
Set in the 1970s, the sitcom centers on the Clearys, an Irish-Catholic family living on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The cast includes Michael Cudlitz, Mary McCormack, Sam Straley, Caleb Foote, Sawyer Barth, Christopher Paul Richards, Jack Gore, Andy Walken, and Santino Barnard.
During this year’s summer TCA press conference, Burke explained why ABC decided to cancel The Kids Are Alright, saying:
We looked at many measures. We looked at multi-platform viewing. We looked at social media sentiment. There did not seem to be a strong enough fan base at the time. These things always come down to business decisions, and this was a tough, tough decision.”
On Twitter, star Michael Cudlitz responded to the comment:
Seriously, @abc. Just say “no comment”. This is just rude. I apologize to the @TheKidsABC fandom on behalf of @abc. Smfh. https://t.co/qJoRzJanzE

What do you think? Are you a fan of The Kids Are Alright? Would you have watched a second season?
It was one of the best shows on television. ABC made a big mistake cancelling it. I hope that some day the show will come back.
I absolutely loved this show and would definitely watch a second season! It was hilarious and SO true of being a kid in the ’70s……..I really hope another far less short sighted network picks it up.
I loved the show, so heartwarming , funny, was so looking forward to a 2nd season..everything decent they cancel
Give it another chance…
We love this show! It harkens back to our Catholic upbringing in the 50s and 60s and reminds us of the crap they used to tell us, all under the guise of religion. Sometimes our parents made up their own rules to fit a situation and told us that it was in the bible. It’s a hoot to watch!
I loved this show & so did my daughter. Please bring it back!
This was the best show on television!! The acting was fantastic. The comedy writing was on a par with “Everybody loves Raymond” and “All in the family”..
There was not the proper promotion of this show. They have broken a lot of hearts including mine.
This show should have been renewed! It was a funny show that anyone, including a family could watch. I don’t understand why shows in the Bachelor franchise keep getting renewed, and shows like this don’t get promoted and given a chance. Why make a spin off of Blackish? Isn’t that show good enough? Because of these unnecessary new shows, great shows like The Kids are Alright & Whiskey Cavalier get cancelled due to not enough room in the schedule. ABC claims they don’t know where to put them. It is very frustrating! Every time I start a new show, I… Read more »
I can’t believe this show was cancelled. It was one of the funniest new shows on TV. Cast, writing, production were AMAZING.
This was one of the best shows on – intelligent, witty, well acted. Shouldn’t be surprised, ‘tho – the good shows seem to get cancelled and the crappy ones stay on. Would LOVE to see this come back.
I loved this show! (Thankfully I bought the first season.) The show had a lot going on and topics I remember as a kid the same age as Timmy: Vietnam and the draft, women and birth control, etc. Also there were so many great details: the phone on the long cord, the photomat, John and Yoko on the telethon, etc. The show had good things to say and was hilarious. I was looking forward to season two and was very disappointed with the cancellation. Doesn’t make sense. The actors were great – rare to find that even level of excellence… Read more »
I enjoyed the setting, cast, story lines and think the show is funny and I want it to be brought back. The Mom and Dad are strong characters without being portrayed as bumbling goofs and that’s fresh.
I loved it! Grew up in 70’s on the east end of Los Angeles county. Brought back some wonderful memories and the scripts hit it out of the ballpark! I sure hope another network will pick it up. ☹
I thought it was one of the best shows on TV! ABC didn’t even give it a chance. I watched it on Hulu again after the season was over. Very funny and entertaining show. ABC got it wrong again. I hope another network is smart enough to pickup this great show.
This was my new favorite show. I thought it was fresh and funny and it brought back an era in which I grew up in. I’m still devastated this was canceled. I honestly think the network did NOTHING to promote it. I happened to catch a commercial one time and thought I’d tape it just to see what it was all about and loved it instantly. None of my friends had ever heard about it, and when I submitted statements about the show online praising the show, most people seem to had never heard of it and wished they would… Read more »
Loved this show! Very sad it was cancelled.
