It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven years since the end of The Sopranos. The beloved HBO series ended with a finale that still has fans scratching their heads today.
What happened at the very end, when the screen went black? Was Tony Soprano finally whacked? Well, according to a new interview with series creator David Chase, he wasn’t.
In an interview with Vox, writer Martha P. Nochimson asked Chase if Tony died in the finale. He simply shook his head ‘no’ and replied, “No he isn’t.”
Unfortunately, Chase didn’t elaborate any further about the finale blackout but this seems to rule out a very popular theory.
What do you think? What do you think that the ending of The Sopranos meant? Is this finale one of the best or worst?
Update: Chase now says…
Worst finale of all time. It was like a wet rage, no not true–a wet rage has more personality.
The ending was ok, the sopranos was an awesome show, and now, that James is dead, it would be too sad to think that tony died as well.
Well I’m glad he finally said that Tony did not die. I had numerous debates with my buddies about this back in the day. Sopranos was an incredible show but the finale was really bad. For those who liked the ending you are in the minority and I’m sure its the same people who liked the last episode of Lost. If you want to see how a series should end watch the last season and episode of Breaking Bad. Great story, action packed, and a great climax to a great show. It’s to bad that every show can’t end like… Read more »
One thing pointed out by a friend was how when Tony and Bobby were talking about death Bobby said something like “I think you don’t even realize it. One second you’re alive and then you’re gone.” That seemed like a hint to the ending. Suddenly everything was just gone. Seems like the most logical explanation for ending the series like that. To come along after all these years and declare he wasn’t dead seems little more than an escape hatch they figured in just in case they decided to make a movie (There was talk) or such back then
Personally I thought they should have done a version with Tonys dad and uncle Junior when they were young and running things. Back when it was even meaner streets. Do it with a totally different cast and a show runner that doesn’t take two year breaks between seasons. I’m surprised someone hasn’t proposed something like that long ago already
“The Sapranos”, I am a big fan of. I liked how it ending, making the audience wonder what happened to Tony Soprano! It left it open for a come back or spin off movie like Sex in the City! I think now it should be left as is. The show wouldn’t be the same without James Gandolfini playing the part. If HBO decides to bring it back, it really should be as if Tony Saprano did die at the end instead of replacing the character with another actor. Like I mentioned, it just wouldn’t be the same.
It really was a strange ending for a great show. Whatever happened to the boy & girl who played their 2 kids?
Is he dead? Really? What does it matter now that the actor is actually dead? Are they thinking of revising with a stand in? That’d be the day
It was very deliberately ambiguousr-one thing that the series emphasised was the sheer sudden violence of the Mafia life-getting as old as his uncle was very rare for someone in their ‘line of work’-if it didn’t happen then, it would happen later.
It was just the way to mark the end of the series, just as it is in many movies. It would have been clear if the words “THE END” had been in the middle of the black, but apparently Chase didn’t want it to be clear or didn’t want to close any doors at the time. lol
One of the best endings! Did it leave me wondering what happened? Yes, but at least it wasn’t forgettable, like so many endings.
