Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.
Definitely needs another season or 3. Usuallyvfind I get bored of TV but had looked forward to sitting and watching this every week. Itß usually and that cancelled before or just after season 1 ends.
PLEASE bring the show back! Somehow, Ethan has to survive and is in hiding. His son finds him and helps him get the town back.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE continue the series!! and keep the same cast… there are awesome!
Yes my husband and I agree that it would be great to have another season — It has a unique draw — an interesting way of playing with your mind —
Linda, I couldn’t have said it BETTER myself!! It does draw you into the story with all the twists & turns, left my husband & me wanting more. It was the BEST series that we have seen in a long time and I do hope they re-new it. I love this show!! Please bring it back.
I really enjoyed this season. I would definitely watch another year
Bring it back. It is a good show.
We would absolutely watch a second third fourth season of wayward pines. We love Matt Dillon and hope they can bring him back as well as the other leading characters. We were not aware this was intended to be a miniseries and were so angry when it appeared Matt Dillon died blowing up the Abbie’s. That we said we would not watch season two without him! Then we found out there would be no season two. We feel the network, m knight shylamar and the author crouch…I apologize for misspellings or if the name is incorrect…should do all they can… Read more »
Fox is always like this. That’s why I try not to watch to many shows from them. They take the really bad T.V. shows and keep them and get rid of the rest. Come on! Let’s keep the good content and let the bad ones go! I can’t believe it’s rumored that maybe they will make a new season but in a couple years with a different cast! You let a lot of people down Fox. SOMEBODY CONTACT THE WRITER TO PAIR UP WITH NETFLIX!
It’s true. I watched the first episode and then decided to wait and see if Fox renewed it before I got too invested. They don’t promote their shows enough and then cancel them right away unless they get ratings like Empire. It’s okay with comedies, but I hate to get involved in a drama only to have it get canceled, which happened with most of their shows the past year.
This needs a second season, and a third and a fourth… The biggest flaw in the launch was that there was not enough implication and too much nothingness. (Reminded me of LOST, but worse.) The second flaw was that people are still saying “Aliens”, so the whole “genetic mutation of humans” point was not elaborated on. That could have been indicated in the first episode without spoiling the show. Hell, it would have helped the show if it started with that whole chunk of data… First episode should have been excerpts of the lead scientist’s lectures, and followed with flash-forwards… Read more »
hope there will be a second series please!
There should definitely be a second season. I look forward every Thursday to this one show. It’s disappointing that they would even consider not continuing it. Now I think them killing off the main star of the show from the beginning was terrible but it did add a unexpected twist. There is so many ways to continue this and keep it going even with the main actor still. No one says that he has to die or that it wasn’t a dream. Please continue with another season so I have a shoe to actually look forward to watching each week… Read more »
I would definitely watch a second season of WP!
please please please continue this show. There are at least 3 books in the series, can’t there be at least 3 seasons? Especially when it’s the 2nd highest rated show for the summer?
You MUST do a Season 2!!!!!! Why stop now?? This is an awesome show with an incredible story line that I can only imagine could go on and on and keep us coming back for more!!
Please bring back Wayward Pines, loved it and watched every episode.
