Although Dark Matter did pretty well in its first two seasons, are viewers still interested in the Raza shipmates’ backstories? Syfy seems to think so. In fact, it’s added an after-show — After Dark — for the space opera’s third season. Will Dark Matter be cancelled or renewed for season four? Stay tuned.
A science fiction drama, Dark Matter stars Marc Bendavid, Melissa O’Neil, Anthony Lemke, Alex Mallari Jr, Jodelle Ferland, Roger Cross, and Zoie Palmer. The Syfy TV series follows the crew of a derelict spaceship who awake with no memory of who they are or how they got on board. Still, they must work together to survive a threatening voyage charged with vengeance, betrayal, and plenty of secrets.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.

For comparisons: The second season of Dark Matter on Syfy averaged a 0.17 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 676,000 viewers.
What do you think? Do you like the Dark Matter TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season?
9/1/17 update: Syfy has cancelled Dark Matter after three seasons. Details here.
This may be a year old but define irony. SYFY canceled this great show only to have its “best” performing show, A YEAR LATER, be running a rating only a point higher. Only one show and all but three in their current lineup has been canceled except one that was rushed to an end, Killjoys. That’s as of 11/16/19. Wonder how the bean counters are figuring this out in the ledger? Good shows means viewers and advertisers which equals $$. Now no shows, why watch the channel.
I have to agree with the other comments below, when a show gets more interesting and the characters become more interesting as the series progresses why cancel it? Surely a show with an increasing audience should be continued.
It seems that any series that provides a touch of comedy, especially dark humor, mixed with “cerebrality”, and decent-to-good production value (especially for expensive SciFi), is doomed. Instead, give us more Big Brother, Survivor, and their like. It’s disturbing to think just what that says about us. Another good one gone? Netflix’s Sense8. The production cost $9M/episode and was cancelled because ratings were falling. How could ratings possibly fall with the pure visual beauties and wonderful science that greeted us every episode?! (Also, I think it has the most beautiful start credits roll I’ve *ever* seen in any production, small… Read more »
I can’t believe the bean counters canceled Dark Matter. Right at a pivotal moment, the Dark Ships arrive. We loyal fans can only pray someone with half a brain buys the rights, continues with the original writing staff and cast, and continues where they left off & make millions$$. Yup, seriously upset! Thank God for Netflix, I can watch it over and over.
I hate it when shows are cancelled when they show in INCREASING audience! 17 share isn’t bad for a “niche” audience? WTF is that about? Screw the SyFy network. I liked Continuum (where at least one actor from Dark Matter came from) of course filmed in Canada, eh. That one actually ended and wasn’t cancelled (surprise, surprise, surprise)… Anyway, Peace and Love thanks for the vent…
Loved the show, really going to miss it.
I don’t often write comments but this time for Dark Matter I will make an exception for an exceptional show. There have been few shows in my 46 years of life that I would go straight home to watch. No other plans would interfere with me watching what I had recorded. The characters were fresh and original, the endings were the only things I could not always see coming a mile away. What a welcome relief! I feel in love with the android on day one. The crew of the Raza became my family. I recruited non syfy people to… Read more »
My wife and I grew up watching the original Star Trek and found Dark Matter filled in the gap of the Star Trek series we waited for anxiously as those series developed and watched them. We saw Dark Matter’s first two seasons on Netflix and, thankful to Netflix, just finished watching season three with as much zeal as when we watched the Star Trek series. Please bring back a season four and finish what season three started. I have to believe Sci-FY will lose viewers for their new series if they keep viewers hanging with unfinished shows.
Best SyFy show on tv. If it is ending it is writer’s fault not actors. Great show.
