ABC has made a decision about the fate of their new Conviction TV show. The network has decided not to order any episodes beyond the initial 13 episodes. Has the series been cancelled? Could it return for a second season?
A legal drama series, Conviction follows what happens when attorney Hayes Morrison (Hayley Atwell), the daughter of a former President, gets “blackmailed” into joining the Conviction Integrity Unit. It’s a NYC department that re-examines cases when there is suspicion of wrongful conviction. The rest of the cast includes Eddie Cahill, Shawn Ashmore, Merrin Dungey, Emily Kinney, Manny Montana, and Daniel Franzese.
It’s no secret that the Conviction series has been struggling in the ratings. The series debuted in October to a disappointing 0.92 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.17 million viewers. The numbers saw a sizable drop in week two and got even worse in later weeks. This week’s installment fell to a new low with just a 0.6 in the demo and 3.64 million.
Deadline reports that ABC isn’t ordering any additional episodes but the network hasn’t officially cancelled Conviction. They’re keeping their options open by keeping the cast under contract, just in case they want to order a second season. This scenario will sound familiar to fans of other ratings-challenged ABC dramas from years past. Typically these shows don’t end up being renewed, many viewers about them, and they are quietly cancelled in May.
For now, ABC is expected to air the remaining eight episodes of Conviction. However, with such poor ratings, it seems unlikely that they’ll keep it in the Mondays at 10pm timeslot.
It’s worth noting that the network recently cut the episode order for their low-rated Thursday night series, Notorious.
What do you think? Do you like the Conviction TV show? Do you think that it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
This show is great. I read four weeks or so ago that it was probably being cancelled which could explain why ownership is declining. I think it’s a sleeper – give it another go.
I love this show and Notorius. I hope neither gets cancelled. I do have a comment on TV shows. Please keep the days and times consistent and give them a chance for viewers to really watch more than five episodes before pulling the plug. I usually go through and record them and watch later. Having football, Survivor, DWTS and The Voice competing against new shows just isn’t fair.
Please keep this show it is really good and different! I love the cast too they work really well together!
I REALLY like this show. Hope it gets a second season.
I love this show and Hayley!! ABC needs to keep quality dramas like this on the air! Although they, true to form, feel the need to clutter up the storyline with some cliche topics! It would be different if they were natural to the plot! Otherwise love the show!!
Please leave it and renew it.
Please keep the show!! This always happens to me. I get into a show and it gets cancelled. It is so frustrating. Please bring it back!!!!
I really hope they don’t cancel it. Yes its a procedural and it doesn’t exactly break much new ground, but it has some really good characters and is doing an unusually good job at developing them. Good cast, good characters, well written. Its probably my favourite of the September batch of network dramas.
I love conviction. I think that it is refreshing. Please keep it.
