After another week of disappointing ratings, it looks like NBC’s struggling Journeyman series just ran out of time.
The peacock network reportedly had until yesterday to give a full-season order to the freshman drama. NBC let it pass, effectively canceling the series.
Though the ongoing writers strike would have prevented production from moving forward immediately, an additional episode order would have kept the series alive for a potential return later this season or even for 2008-09.
Case in point, NBC recently committed to a full season order for fellow struggling drama Life. A differentiating factor may be that, while Life is produced “in-house” by NBC Universal, Journeyman is produced by 20th Century Fox. As such, the latter likely represents a greater financial commitment than the former.
All 13 episodes of the time-travel series have been completed and an NBC spokeswoman told The Hollywood Reporter that the final two will air as scheduled next week. Series creator Kevin Falls has said that, though the final episode doesn’t finish off the story, it does offer some answers to ongoing questions.
Will the fans ever get more answers than that? NBC could possibly pick up Journeyman for a second season. This seems highly unlikely but, if the writers strike drags on, the network could find itself desperate for scripted series in Fall 2008. Stay tuned!
I just watched what might be the last episode of Journeyman last night. Such a good show. Ratings have too much influence. NBC is just becoming another place where bad TV rules. Anything worth watching goes by the wayside. I heard they are keeping “Chuck” really that was a better decision?????
Journeyman cancelled? No surprise there. NBC has this nauseating and irritating (and oh so predicatable) habit of adding well-written, thought-provoking and enjoyable shows like “Journeyman” and “Studio 60” to their lineup, failing to promote them and then letting the shows fall into oblivion without so much as an attempt to save them. Yet they tirelessly spend all of their time and effort into cramming mediocre shows like “Friday Night Lights” down everyone’s throats. Is it any wonder NBC is lacking in the ratings?
I am really disappointed Journeyman will be cancelled. I could never watch it live, I always recorded the show because 10:00 is too late for me. This is a great, action packed show, actually my favourite new show this year. I finally figured ABC was getting it right instead of producing ultimate crap like “America’s got Talent”. I was disappointed when “Studio 60” was cancelled last year, but I understood that that show likely had inflated production costs. Journeyman can’t possibly comepare to that. Oh and Bionic Woman is a ridiculous remake of a ridiculous concept, but yeah, definitely stick… Read more »
No wonder I couldn’t find any info on the next episode. This is a highly entertaining show with an awesome cast..great acting.. I can only hope there is someone in charge smart enough to pick this show up next season.
I shudder to think what the average IQ of the public must be though the ratings of television shows gives me a nightmare producing idea. Finally a show about quantum physics, greek philosophy thrown in once and a while, lush film noir scenes, well written, well acted and the ratings tank because most of the population of the US must have the IQ of a piece of toast. God Forbid you have to pay attention and think about something other than snarky sarcastic remarks and our country’s favorite pasttime – making fun of reality show contestants. I should have learned… Read more »
just finished watching what i believe is the last show. great show, great concept horrible network. nbc continues to put out great products… just to run them into the ground. maybe my 4 favorite tv shows (journeyman, las vegas, FNL and the office) all air on NBC and 3 of the 4 may be canceled after this season. Get it together
Please don’t cancel “Journeyman”!It’s a great show with a great cast and a great story!
This is lousy news. The show not only had potential — it was already capitalizing on it. NBC should have given it a further chance, putting the repeats in heavy rotation, and let it find a wider audience.
Who is running these networks??
Maybe one of the “other” networks like FX or the Sci-Fi channel will pick thi show up.
This infuriates me. This is a emmy worthy cast and script….and they just throw it away. I am so sick of investing in quality television only to have it yanked, while being left with CRAP shows that aren’t worth my time. Please SciFi…grab this one and run…
This IS bs. 100 bucks says that “Clash of the Choirs” will make it 4 seasons and for what….its stupidity. This is ridiculous, with this and scrubs going I have no reason to watch NBC ever again. I bid you good day NBC
This is complete BS. I am sick of networks only giving the greenlight to shows that are “instant hits”. So now we get stuck with a bunch of super lame reality shows and confusing, commercial ridden hour-long game shows, while any REAL decent programs like Journeyman get canceled within months and replaced by another show that will get canceled too if enough people don’t stay home every night to watch TV. There’s really no point in becoming a regular watcher of any show because it could get canceled any time leaving us viewers wanting more and having no answers.
Another good show cancelled. I guess I will watch survivor 2 billion or not so amazing race, oh sorry no I won’t. I watch T.V. to get away from real life if I want real life I have my own.
Yet another original, well written, badly promoted show that is being cancelled before its time. At least in this case they gave it enough time to start to find its feet… Oh and what an excellent pair they found to. Life, also poorly promoted and supported, is equally good, original, and towards the end maybe a bit more compelling. It needed to find its feet as well, but not as badly as Journeyman did. On the other hand it didn’t find quite as a good pair as Journeyman did, however they would still be something to write home about. I… Read more »
Dang, NBC hardly gave Journey Man any attention, and 10:00 has been a bad time slot for a lot of shows. Lame. At least I can still watch Lost. Maybe some other network (unlikely) will pick up Journeyman… 😐
