CBS made some difficult decisions when it came to cancellations this season. MacGyver, All Rise, The Unicorn, and NCIS: New Orleans have ended or will end this month, and Kelly Kahl, the president of CBS Entertainment, spoke about what went into the decisions to cancel all four shows, per Deadline.
MacGyver and NCIS: New Orleans (which airs its finale this weekend) have both aired on CBS for several seasons, and fans were surprised when the news broke about their cancellations. Kahl said the following:
“Every year you evaluate what is making the strongest statement for your schedule and what gives you the best circulation, what will bring you the most numbers of viewers. You ask that question for pretty much every show every year, how can we make the schedule as strong as we can in the fall, and that leads to some tough decisions. MacGyver has been an excellent show for us, New Orleans was an excellent show for us. But sometime shows hit the end of their cycle and we have to, in some cases, say goodbye.”
As for All Rise and The Unicorn, both aired for two seasons on the network. Kahl said the following about their cancellations:
“We creatively love both shows, it’s literally a numbers game on the schedule, and it’s a number game when it typically comes to getting a renewal. I think these shows were not living up to the potential in terms of an audience that we hoped to see in their respective time slots.”
What do you think? Did you want to watch more of these four TV shows on CBS? Which cancellation surprised you or upset you the most?
Please re-instate “All Rise” as the best-written, smartest, most thought-provoking show in years. How do you know what the “numbers” are? Nobody asked me, or any of the educators, thinkers, creatives, and social “justivists” I know of. Excellence requires time to catch on among the low-run fan base which at first seeks only more on-screen murders, gun violence, and stupid car crashes…but which needs a show like this more than anyone. Excess profits for moguls should be low priority for you; instead, a vital contribution to society should prevail once in a while.
The real question is why did they allow Chuck Lorre produce the most. Productions on CBS? Why did they cancel other directors productions and allow him to continue to dominate the network? Stuff is boring same idea same concepts but they are allowing him to continue paying him even more money? That should be addressed here it just problems in the siding who is the king of comedy directing producers. Putting all your eggs in one basket isn’t a good way of playing Russian roulette with what might be good and what not might be good. This network shows a… Read more »
CBS hasn’t always been kind to Chuck Lorre – remember “Mike & Molly” – last season (6th) got 13 episode orders rather than 22, and the network hung him out to dry by not even willing to talk about a 7th season (under the impression that Melissa McCarthy would cost too much since she had hit it big as a movie star), as well as double-running the last 6 episodes over 3 weeks at the end of the season? His shows are NOT ALL the same ideas or concepts – sure there are elements that he likes to use in… Read more »
Respect to what you just said but you really only have to look at the plots they have the same type of idea of using old actors comedy actors with either distasteful John or themes in or other antisocial ideas. I think you’re being too kind to Chuck Lorre, because the way he makes fun of people’s lack of therefore isn’t funny. In some cases it’s tasteless and harmful.
As for your comment about all his 2020 to 2021 are all his programming? You’re feeling to realize what world we’re living in today. We’re people can’t go out and we’re stuck watching TV all day. That’s not considered top brake TV show that’s called people being bored and watching basically anything on TV. All due respect, but anything would work in this time in history and if you look closely at the ratings all his programming drop massively during this pandemic I don’t call that successful I it’s cold not knowing what people really want. If you look closely… Read more »
We really enjoyed watching MacGyver and NCIS New Orleans and are very disappointed they are being cancelled. Please change your mind.
Ncis nola was one of my favorite shows. Always good story line and great ensemble of actors. Even afyer some beloved cast members left it moved on

I love All Rise. Great story line. Wonderful cast. I cannot believe CBS has canceled this show.
I think they should have left MacGyver a NCIS: NO alone.
Any one of the shows those idiots cancelled are infinitely better than “Survivor” or “Undercover Boss”. And I’ve never even seen a single episode of ANY of the NCIS franchise, but I’m still confident in saying it’s better than “reality” dragonshit.
There are very few shows that I like that are currently being aired by the networks. MacGyver and NCIS New Orleans, All Rise and Rebel were all shows that I made a point of watching. Now the only ones left are Bull, NCIS, sometimes FBI, Magnum (maybe more of these have been cancelled and I missed it). Any show of quality seems to get the axe, lowering the bar to the lowest level.
The reason why people watch these shows is to escape what’s going on in the world. I was a fan of All Rise, but this whole year everyone is doing something about racism. People are tired of hearing about it. Yes this system needs change, but we don’t need to be reminded of it everytime we turn on the tv.
Will really miss The Unicorn! 🙁
At the end of the day whether it’s time to end a show or not, you should give the creators enough of a heads up so that they can give the fans of these long running shows a proper conclusion….
I don’t believe you are taking All Rise and Mcguyver off the air these are two of my favorite shows. How about taking off Bull instead
Yes please renewed ncis new orleans and mcgyver both shows are really great
I just love all these “armchair programmers” who think they can program CBS better than Kelly Kahl who served under both Les Mooves and Nina Tassler – two of the most important programmers and CBS Network heads in the history of the network.
How about reading about the BUSINESS OF TELEVISION – CBS is in the BUSINESS to making money, not keeping on shows that have run their course, low viewership across all platforms or shows that after given a chance have not improved, or shows that are not being able to be sold on the “back end” in syndication.
