We don’t have to worry about the New Amsterdam TV show being cancelled for quite a while. NBC has already renewed the series for a fourth and a fifth season. But, how will this medical drama perform in the ratings? After a year-long pandemic, are viewers too weary of medical storylines? Stay tuned.
Airing on Tuesday nights, the New Amsterdam TV show stars Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher, and Tyler Labine. Doctor Max Goodwin (Eggold) is a caring physician whose goal is to fix a broken medical system and to provide exceptional care to the people who need it most. He inspires (almost) everyone around him, and will stop at nothing to breathe new life into the understaffed, underfunded, and underappreciated New Amsterdam Medical Center. Those working with Goodwin include Dr. Lauren Bloom (Montgomery), the head of the ER; oncologist Dr. Helen Sharpe (Agyeman); cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Sims); psychiatrist Dr. Iggy Frome (Labine); and Dr. Vijay Kapoor (Kher), head of the Neurological Department. In season three, Max and his team face the daunting task of sustaining that optimism while dealing with a pandemic that exposed the gaping inequities in our health care. Max is no longer content to fix a broken system. He’s determined to tear it down and build something better.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
6/9 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.

For comparisons: Season two of New Amsterdam on NBC averaged a 0.77 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.10 million viewers.
Note: These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the New Amsterdam TV series on NBC? Are you glad that it’s been renewed for a fourth season already?
Far into Season and I am a bit dismayed at all the “wokeness” episodes. I’ve fast-forwarded through some parts already. If it gets worse I will stop watching it. Disappointed because it has so much potential!
My husband and I live abroad and are always searching for a good series to follow. We watched the first two seasons and loved it. Season 3…well, we are incredibly disappointed….the wokeness is OBNOXIOUS! We are done, and will no longer follow the lives of Max, Dr. Helen, and Dr. Lauren…ENOUGH!!! No wonder everybody is cancelling NETFLIX…
Loved season 1 and 2. Hated season 3 to political. Not to sure about season 4 not really liking it so far. To much like Gray Anatomy everyone is sleeping with each other. I liked it when Max was just working on making the hospital better. So sad it stated out being a show I couldn’t wait for the next episode. I will give it a couple of more episodes if not liking it any better I will be done with it.
Feel the same!
New Amsterdam was never a huge favourite of mine, but I could always rely on it for a good solid hour of medical drama. Sadly, it has now become woke. I do not want to be lectured to, especially since I lecture all day. Go Woke, Go Broke. If the writers continue with this new direction, judging from the reviews on almost every entertainment platform, they are going to see the show being cancelled. I couldn’t get through a full episode and I am sorry to say that that ends New Amsterdam for me…forever.
I used to love this show…. But, it’s becoming a political field. I have nothing against talking hot topic points, that’s what news stations are for, but I’m so done with shows that stray from storylines to push hot topics; I want to watch a show to be entertained, not to be lectured. We get it, you have a platform and want to use it, but come on, it’s loosing depth of characters and storyline, because each new episode is trying to cover the latest news headline.
Update of my June 13th. post. Last night I watched a recorded episode. It was over the top stupid. Max was going to save the world by rationing plastic gloves, changing light bulbs and stopping all meat products served to the patients and staff. He seems like a mentally disturbed person acting quick and nervous. I am about to stop watching. Please go back to a good medical show. Question, I wonder if any network people ever read these posts???
I came back to the comments section to see if just maybe the producers maybe had steered the ship back on course. Apparently the ice berg has done to much damage and this ship is destined to the Atlantic floor bottom. What a shame. The original premise of this show was brilliant but they’ve gone over woke!
New Amsterdam was my favorite show to watch, but I’m afraid I gave up watching early in the current season. When the storyline gets too heavy and ridiculous with wokeness and “race theory” content, then it no longer is pleasurable to watch. Dr. Goodwin was such a good character until he turned into the insecure and inept leader that he now is.
I seem to agree with many other viewers. The show has gone down hill. Max almost makes me nervous with his arm movements and quirky ideas. Now the show has gone the road of many others and hit the Race Theory. Last show I watched it was the Indians who had been looked down upon for almost 400 years got a hall named in Indian. Don’t be mad at me, I am not a racist, many years ago I dated an American Indian woman. Let the show get back to being like it was in the beginning. Almost all shows… Read more »
