What’s This TV Show About?
Airing on the FOX television network, The Orville stars Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Halston Sage, J Lee, Mark Jackson, Chad L. Coleman, Norm Macdonald, Larry Joe Campbell, Victor Garber, Brian George, and Rachael MacFarlane. In 2417, Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) is promoted to captain The U.S.S. Orville, with the assistance of First Officer Kelly Grayson (Palicki). Unfortunately, she’s his ex-wife, and her presence acts as a bridle on his enthusiasm. Whether facing off with the Krill, a dangerous alien race, or attempting rescues on behalf of the Planetary Union, the human and alien crew still must deal with their mundane issues and each other.
Season One Ratings
The first season of The Orville averaged a 1.24 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.33 million viewers. Find out how The Orville stacks up against the other FOX TV shows.
The Orville has been renewed for a second season which will debut on December 30, 2018. Stay tuned for further updates.
Telly’s Take
Although it premiered with very good numbers, the first two episodes were scheduled to air after NFL double-headers on Sunday evenings, which is a great lead-in. The show regularly airs on Thursdays when it’s tougher to attract an audience. While the numbers saw a big drop in the new timeslot, they are still good enough to earn a second season on FOX. I’ll keep an eye on the Nielsens and update this page with any breaking developments. Subscribe for free alerts on any cancellation or renewal news regarding The Orville.

What do you think? Are you glad that The Orville TV show was renewed for a second season? How would you feel if FOX had cancelled this TV series, instead?
I absolutely love the way this show recycles tried and tested Star Trek-style soft SF plots and takes away the pomposity. Like a professional tribute band, it delivers all the stuff we liked about the originals, but without the tragic back stories, the endless infighting and the tyranny of the “true” fan. That’s the great thing about great stories, they will always be great as long as you make them the centre of the piece when you re-frame them for the next generation which has its own needs, wants, anxieties, expectations and discourse. That’s what makes this show so attractive… Read more »
I thought the Orville was great! Better than I expected as originally I read a spoof on Star Trek but instead it pays homage then takes off on it’s own sci-fi journey. Congrats to Seth and the cast and keep exploring!!
The Orville has a real star trek vibe, with some humor. My wife and I really enjoy it.
I’ve just watched my first 5 episodes of this show and I have to say it’s great to see a series that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Star Trek with Patrick Stewart was too PC for my tastes, and the latest ST Discovery is just, well, bad.
This is fun, plain and simple. The first episode with the ‘banging Papa Smurf’ line had me laughing!
I just keep expecting to hear Peter Griffin, perhaps they should use his voice for the ships computer. 🙂
Promote it on Twitter, it seems to get a heavy following on there. I’d love to see it for at least another season, so it can take the criticism against its 1st season and apply it. If it doesn’t gain a bigger audience after Season 2, then it’s understandable to wrap it up.
I am in love with this show. Seth Macfarlane is a genius and this show needs more than just a season renewal! Throw them 10 seasons!
I just discovered this show. It is so much fun! I have never seen a single promo for this. How can a network completely ignore one of their shows? If no one knows it exists, can it have hope for renewal? It absolutely deserves renewal and some serious promotion. I hope it gets both!!
Best new show in years, please renew for a few seasons
Pleeeease keep it on the air. It’s timely, socially relevant sci fi with a dose of humor – one of the best things on the air right now. Please let it continue!
I love this show! and it shows how much Seth Macfarlane loves Star Trek, if it only gets the one season it will be a shame, in my opinion it will still be a classic! x
Well, considering it is an excellent show, great stories, I expect Fox to cancel it like they do all the great shows.
Episode 7 was Trek extrapolation of current trends. Well done.
This show rocks! Look forward to it every week and it keeps getting better. Quality family entertainment and hilarious.
Keep The Orville. I am a big Star Trek fan and I hate the new series. The Orville is more true like the original Star Trek and the characters are awesome. Cancelling the show would be awesome huge mistake. I love this show. Please keep it on the air
Discovery imo is GREAT SHOW, on the other hand Orville is a bad boring joke, not even close to Star Trek.
I like the show and I look forward to a second season.
