Times are hard for the Farrells of Shay Mountain. WGN America has cancelled its Outsiders TV show after just two seasons. That there will be no Outsiders season three comes as a bit of a surprise, because the (albeit low-rated) Appalachian family drama was the cable channel’s top performer in the Nielsen ratings. The April 25th season two finale will now serve as an unintentional Outsiders TV series finale.
Outsiders stars Joe Anderson, David Morse, Ryan Hurst, Gillian Alexy, Kyle Gallner, Thomas M. Wright, and Christina Jackson. The WGN America drama follows the Farrell clan. This tight-knit isolationist family has lived atop Shay Mountain for over two hundred years. They are constantly at odds with those who live outside of their community.

Sony Pictures Television to Shop Outsiders TV Show to Other Networks
Deadline reports Sony Pictures Television will try to shop around a third season of Outsiders, but it’s kind of late in the year to do so. The news outlet also mentioned the possibility that parent-company Tribune Media is looking to sell off WGN America as a reason for cancelling its highest rated show. Here’s more.
Speculation about a potential Tribune sale, which has been going on for years, intensified recently with a report about a potential merger with Sinclair. There have been rumors about potentially stripping the company to get it ready for a sale though in a statement about Outsiders‘ cancellation, Kern stresses that the company’s intends to “expand” WGNA’s original content and to “be reallocating our resources to a more diverse programming strategy and to new structures.” Here is his full statement:
After three years of investing in marquee, brand-defining dramas, WGN America has successfully expanded its audience, its reach, and its presence in the minds of viewers. In our next phase, we intend to expand our original and unique content to continue growing our relevance and appeal to the widest possible audience. To achieve this, we will be reallocating our resources to a more diverse programming strategy and to new structures, enabling us to expand both the quantity and breadth of content aired by WGN America.
This move is designed to deliver even more value to our advertising and distribution partners. To free up the resources to reach this goal, we will unfortunately not be renewing Outsiders. We are grateful to our production partners at Sony Pictures Television and the terrifically talented people who made the show possible.
What do you think? Are you still watching the Outsiders TV show? Do you think another network will pick up the third season, or do you expect it to remain cancelled? Sound off in the comments.
My husband and I love this show. Please renew for season 3.
I have had it with all the stupid networks. There is no sense in even starting to watch a series because they ignorantly cancel the best of them and leave only the crap on. How many zombie and vampire series can there be season after season. Add all the so called reality shows (that have nothing to do with reality at all) and there is nothing left to watch. As a fan I want something with some meat to it, something with some substance and good actors. Outsiders and Salem both were excellent series and it’s hard to believe that… Read more »
Please don’t cancel this great series. First you kill off Asa in the first season, which was a Big mistake and now you’re taking a still great show off the air. I came on here to write about another great series that ABC is taking off, too. I’m not into sports or all those dumb reality shows either. If it’s not working in that time slot, move it to another day or time. Give it a chance! I heard about it by word of mouth.
Just watched the Season Two finale. Finally the rightful leader takes a stand. Yes, it may be for anarchy (appropriate) but what a vehicle for the uber talented Ryan Hurst! And what kindling for creative writers to create a smart SEASON THREE around him!!!! SEASON THREE!!! GED GED YAH!!!
We would follow Ryan Hurst ANYWHERE. Someone give that man a film to lead.
Outsiders is the best show on now! I never even knew this channel existed before I watched outsiders. PLEASE DONT CANCEL!!!
Wow Really! One of the few series my wife and I really enjoy
Wow really great series one both my wife and I really enjoy
This is one of the best shows on TV right now. Season 3 please!
WGN is a small cable network that I didn’t know existed until this show. Why would you cancel a guidepost series that brought people to that network?
One of the best shows on Tv along with shades of blue. We need season 3.
I love this show! These networks are all about the ratings! Not taking in what people want to watch! Please bring it back or change networks!
This is ridiculous. Outsiders is a great show. People! we need to start a petition or something for another station to pick them up. Heck, CMT picked up Nashville and I don’ t think that show is half as good as Outsiders! I say we demand another station to pick it up. What does everyone else say?
YOU MUST KEEP THIS SHOW ON TELEVISION! I am So Upset to hear that anyone would even consider taking this show off television! It honestly doesn’t make since! I believe you must be off in your numbers! Almost everyone I know watches this show. It is one of the best shows on Television! You MUST RECONSIDER your HORRIBLE DECISION to CANCEL our FAVORITE SHOW!!! Listen to us for once!!!
If WGN America cancels “OUTSIDERS”…… I say my large number of family and friends will no longer watch WGN America!!!
