In its first year, the Supergirl TV show was a middling performer on CBS. In its second season, after moving to The CW, it was one of that network’s best ratings earners, even though its numbers dropped by well over 50% in both the demo and total audience size. As the “littlest network,” The CW’s expectations differ, and its younger-skewing audience tends to avail itself of streaming and delayed viewing options more often. In its third season, will this superhero drama continue to soar? Will Supergirl be cancelled or renewed for season four? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
Based on the DC Comics character, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, David Harewood, Calista Flockhart, Chris Wood, Floriana Lima, and Katie McGrath. The CW action-adventure centers on Kara Zor-El (Benoist), the cousin of Kal-El, i.e. Superman (Tyler Hoechlin). To remain safe from Krypton’s destruction, Kara grew up on Earth, as Kara Danvers, a human. For years, she kept her powers a secret. Now, as an adult, she works at CatCo Worldwide Media and also for the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO), a super-secret government organization whose mission is to keep National City – and the Earth – safe from sinister threats.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
6/19 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here.
For comparisons: The second season of Supergirl on The CW averaged a 0.73 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.36 million total viewers (Live+SD).
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the Supergirl TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season on The CW?
*4/2/18 update: The CW has ordered a fourth season of Supergirl for the 2018-19 season. Details here.
After sanvers breakup ratings will probably drop. The only reason i watched season 1 was cat grant and in season 2 was sanvers. So am done
Yet, all relationship eps have not had any ratings bump. The only bump this show gets is from the 18-34 demos when either Superman, Martian Manhunter or other comic favorites are promoted. The worse ratings or last seasons was the heavily promoted Lena/Alex/Sanvers getting a series low. I highly doubt that even 0.01 % of Sanvers fans have a Nielson box, so no they won’t swing the needle either way. Only the 18 – 34 demos seems to make any difference to the target demo. And they are the comic book/action fans. So when the Legion of Superhero comes to… Read more »
Shouldn’t all the show fall because of Kreisberg, as he is also the producer for Flash, Arrow, and LoT? Or are the Supergirl viewers just more aware of what is going on in the world?
Nope, ratings for this week are the same as last week, which was about the same as the week before, which was about the same as the week before, etc. I guess the show has found its loyal core audience.
Why do femslash shippers think they are the swinging vote to every show, includng Supergirl and Once Upon A Time? Male characters and heterosexual relationships aren’t why shows fail or deserve to fail, sorry.
Oh, don’t worry, it’s doing quite well. 😉
The viewers that count are those that have a Nielsen Box, I have yet to speak or hear of any specific shipping fans having a Nielsen Box. As has been stated, the ones that move the needle are the comic book fans. Supergirl has a strong base of fans hovering between 5 and 6 in the ratings….hovering around 2 million in viewership numbers, ranking it solidly in the top 5 of the CW. That has not changed this season, except with the crossover and Legion introduction which is evidence of who actually moves the ratings for this show, and it… Read more »
I want season 4-5-6-7-8-9 -10 please don’t stop it
I agree. It should keep on going.
I totally agree with you!!!
Melissa Benoist should probably tell her agent to find her other roles with good scripts , it will be idiotic to continue with this character and stupid show after this season , why even agree to be on a smaller teen network CW with this producers and writers in the first place, really dumb desicion for her career.
Bird in the hand. Besides, she gets good roles in the off season. She was in the movie “Patriot’s Day” and in a mini-series about the Waco disaster recently.
So why give up a plum role as the star of a show that could last for years hoping she can get by with a movie role here and there? Look what happened to David Caruso when he decided he was too good for NYPD Blue. That would be the dumb decision.
I did see her other roles and will check out her upcoming projects, she’s great in this ,i just don’t care about this stupid show if it was still on cbs then maybe, i first saw her in whiplash .she has charisma and multi talented I think she will be better off , she was offered a leading role in a movie while this show was in its first season . She have some great potentials just needs to pick good scripts.
I completely agree with you. She’s fantastic as Supergirl and singlehandedly got me to watch this show and start reading Supergirl Comics. She really is too talented for this show. The problem are the show runners and writers. They just are’nt good and for the life of me, how can you have such a talented lead and write such average material. Season 2 was such a disaster, and that’s all on the show runners and writers. The cast is fine. She does pick good scripts. All her work since Whiplash has been character driven indie flicks which are still coming… Read more »
She has stayed in an interview while promoting whiplash that she likes doing indie movies , and loved to do Broadway. She made a mistake by agreeing to be on CW and not pursuing other projects when cbs drop it. I wish they end it.

If they keep getting political like they are their ratings will continue to drop even more and this show will go off the air. Stop adding politics to our tv shows we don’t have to watch. It doesn’t even make sense Trumps not the president on their world why are they talking about his policies.
The ratings have remained relatively constant and Supergirl is the third most watched show on the CW
Actually, third most watched goes to Riverdale, Super girl is fourth and SG is also 6th on the cw ratings table, its has been steady.
Ratings wise you are correct, viewership wise, Supergirl is #3 at the moment.
Well Update. Its getting more viewers than Riverdale (horrible show) and is set to end its season with viewership numbers on par with The Flash, oh and renewed for season 4 so not going off the air.
I hope Supergirl gets renewed for a fourth season. I think it’s important that they really try to showcase present day issues in our society. Melissa’s acting is too good in this role for the show to just be three seasons.
no problem w present day issues but simply way too biased, unbalanced and over the top in their way left wing political views.
No surprise Ratings Drop by 50% . They Used Superman (One of the world’s most popular Superhero and one of the DC’s Most Powerful Superhero) to Promote this show. then they made him loose to Supergirl ( empowering right ? )
i thought that whole super man thing was so unnecessary, they didn’t have to bring super man down to make her look good.
In my opinion they didn’t bring him down at all, in fact Batman as well as Reign in the comics have said that Supergirl is in fact more powerful, to me he was kind, humble and supportive. That is exactly who Superman is…..I could ask the question, why can’t she defeat him “once” when it is her life or death? I don’t think Superman looked weak at all. It seems to me that it is you guys that are making him look weak…the show showed a part of Superman that we don’t always get to see.
I really loved the show and tend to agree with Kelly, he did not look weak at all. Superman is the most humble of Superheros and he acted exactly as expected. In the end the show is called Supergirl and Superman was essentially being mind controlled so of course she had to win, i don’t remember people getting all that upset earlier in the season when Superman all but saved her from Metallo. In terms of the fight and raw power they seemed pretty even to me really, she passed out herself like only a few seconds later (the whole… Read more »
I really hope that supergirl is renewed. I love the show so much. I know the ratings are not the best but as soon as mon-el appears the ratings are almost certain to go up.
If a CW show lasts 2 season, The CW will keep it until it has 70 episodes. This is the 3rd season and by the end of the season Supergirl will have only 64 episodes. So Supergirl will get a 4th season at least to get to 70 episodes, even if it is just a short season. TV Grim Reaper gives Supergirl a 100% chance of being renewed.
Not true when you look at their other shows. Arrow is still kicking and going into season 7 with sad ratings for the last few seasons and well past 70 episodes.
A lot of Supercorp shippers are really butthurt though, they hate Mon-El and think that he’s the reason why ratings are dropping. They just can’t stand it when two straight female characters, Lena and Kara, weren’t going to be together as a couple, and Mon-El is responsible, and also deserves to be hated, just for being male. In fact, those types of people hate every male character on every show and blame them for everything lol.
i cant wait to see melissa benoist doing erotic or even porn movies when supergirl get canelled 😉
Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..
Why would she? She gets plenty of legitimate movie roles.
He was joking about something else….she has a great range as an actresse. She just needs to continue doing serious roles in indie films with good scripts, but instead of supporting roles ,she should
capitalise on this and go after lead roles to gain her some recognition .I think her performance of SG is so underrated cause of terrible writing and production staff . She could also do some plays on Broadway or musical film, she has some great singing abilities and can dance.
Not sure who is doing the underrating. Most sites have a lot of praise for the show. Most the complaints I see are from the SuperCorp shippers that hate Mon-El and the trump supporters because of how they depict trump as a moron.
I’m talking about season 1, I don’t watch anything cw related, the show’s writing was terrible along with the production on cbs, if it was good she would have gotten some recognition for her performance in s01, she was great in some scenes.CBS did everything to see the show succeed they knew what they could have achieved, they were banking on it ;14 millions for the pilot as an example. The only mistake they made was not dismissing this dumb cw level producers with an even worse writers. Also ,It’s not about politics and their feminist propaganda, it’s about the show… Read more »
You’re correct. Supergirl is even worse on CW. All politics aside still supergirl is a stupid teen drama. when it mixed with feminism it goes into high ridiculous level.
Are you kidding about CBS? They did a lousy job with Supergirl. Hardly any promos during other shows. I don’t recall a single Supergirl promo during the NFL games. And they ran Big Bang Theory reruns instead of Supergirl reruns on off nights.
I’m sorry but I couldn’t disagree more! 14 millions for the pilot alone and 4-5 millions per episode ! and you want them to spend even more money on stupid writers and terrible producers. CBS was expecting at least 13 millions viewers per episode, and I couldn’t blame them they need their revenue, I like Benoist ,knew her before from other roles and her performane was GREAT!! , but berlanti and his crew are TERRIBLE ,All his shows are a teen soap opera garbage that’s way all of them are on bs CW and way cbs moved to this trash… Read more »
I doubt they were expecting 13 million per episode. Even their 2 highest rated shows, NCIS and TBBT barely get that.
They were expecting the show to be their next highest rated show .It had so much potential on CBS, the imbeciles in the production team killed it’s chances from the pilot .their pitch to cbs was so off from the get go, alone with their target demographic ,instead of gullible teen girls they should have targeted men , but what do you expect from morons like this CW teen soap opera incompetent producers. It’s a shame ! Benoist was a great lead, they waisted her portrayal of SG on this garbage and talent for 3 years!
And somehow, they manage to screw it up beyond the breaking point for over half the audience. Mostly the action/adventure crowd. Now it has the most toxic fandom on tv. A show called Supergirl, for goodness sake. Stupid shipping wars taking over a show called Supergirl!! Ughh!
Yes. Benoist deserved and still deserves so much better than the production staff she has behind her. Such a broad range of talent in one person is hard to find. What a waste that she is on a CW show.
I’m so glad to find a smart person in this comment section completely agree !!!!!
Again. Agree. CBS banked on this show. The initial promotion was insane. Massive Bill boards and internet buzz. Like you, I loved Benoist before she was Supergirl. With all the money invested in Supergirl, I can not understand why they didn’t insists on a more experience and mature writing staff, even if Berlanti was the EP. It’s their money. So CBS dropped the ball. It was really obvious that the Berlanti formulaic equation is far from creative. Everything they do, are derivative from other people’s work. CBS needed a far more creative team for their investment. But Season 3 has… Read more »
I agree! I can’t believe they waisted her portrayal on this stupid producers . This show would have been a classic in 10-20 years If it stayed on cbs ! !! IMBECILES !
Yes. This. Pretty sure she would have been Sandy on Grease Live had she not been picked up for Supergirl. She has a terrific voice and it’s going to waste. I hope she gets to do a stint on Broadway. Would love to see her on Moulin Rouge someday. But it is hard for her to go after leading roles when she films Supergirl 9 – 91/2 months of the year. She did indies after both season 1 and 2. And yes, she is very under rated because she is a very nuanced performer. Subtle a lot of the times… Read more »
People seriously can’t be stupid enough to believe this is going to cancel Supergirl. It’s on the CW … do you know how low the ratings have to fall for it to even be considered cancelled> Even then it’s unlikely. We’re talking about the brand name alone that brings attention to the network… Does no one know how tv works?
Who cares for this show really? Benoist deserve better than to be dragged by this imbeciles, she’s too talented for a teen soap opera network like cw! Her performance is the best thing about it. Also, cw was a really dumb move, other streaming services wanted to buy it from CBS, that would have worked, with firing show runners , writing staff ,some supporting actors ect ect.it would have even maintained the same budget as cbs if not more.
I didn’t know that other streaming services wanted to buy it. Too bad it didn’t go to Netflix or Amazon.
Yup,it’s unbelievable how dumb this producers are!!!
If the CW hadn’t taken it Netflix would have grabbed it up.
Apparently you do because you sure spend a lot of time on here bashing a show that you say you don’t watch. Why waste your time. Pretty trollish behavior, usually only trolls are stupid enough to spend this much time bashing something they don’t watch.
Renew Supergirl for a fourth season, please.
They will, it will be renewed as long as MelB wants to play Supergirl. I believe she is signed for 6, possibly 7 seasons. I don’t see her going beyond that however.
Yaaaaaaaaaas!!!!Benoist wI’ll get red off this stupid show this season i called it it’s gone gone!!!! I can’t wait for her other roles she really talented I said this from season 1
Supergirl is guaranteed at least a 5th season. So don’t know where you are getting your information from.
This is where I disagree. Supergirl will go at least 5 seasons. After that all bets are off. Despite the live ratings, DC and TW are invested in the aftermarket. The streaming deals are lucrative and the merchandize sells regardless of ratings. Also, live ratings are meaningless for Netflix or Amazon. This is where the viewship matters over the demos. Then there is the overseas market. All in all, Supergirl will see at least 5 seasons. Much as I want to see her on more serious work, I do hope the fans of the shows get to enjoy it for… Read more »
Hhhhhh yup it’s done done!!!! Yes I couldn’t be happier I can’t wait for Benoist’s new roles !!!!!! She’s talented and deserve better I said this season one !!!!!
Dream on. Supergirl it still a top CW show and a 5th season is all but certain.
Rip.. Super girl
What do you mean my Rip? It’s not like the show is going to be cancelled.
Oh I hope !!! they end this show.the only Good thing from season one on cbs was Melissa Benoist and I really like her as an actresse, singer and want to see her in other roles not wasting her time on this stupid character lol. But I think WB won’t allow CW to cancel it. CBS was going to but they didn’t let them. For competition reasons with marvel ect….but I’m hoping 3 season of this show is more than enough the producers and writers never even tried to save it on cbs let alone a stupid Teen network like… Read more »
Supergirl will get at least a 5th season for syndication purposes.
oh god plzzzz nooo !!! why? waste a great talent on this…….
Because she likes doing it and the CW likes her doing it.
Looks are deceiving , she likes getting paid !!! So she have to sell it ,be sure she hates this stupid show and producers. and even if the show gets renewed ( high unlikely ) it wil not survive for more than 4 seasons .
Yes. I predict 5 full seasons. Despite my personal feelings for how badly the show is produced, it only makes business sense. And who knows, if they continue to improve like the last episode, and actually make a compelling villain in Reign and focus on their protagonist instead of every tom, dick and harry that comes along, it could still hand on to it’s current audience, which is enough to get it renewed to the 5th season.
I’ll just have to be patient and wait for Melissa Benoist to move on to see her in more than Supergirl.
With a drop like this, CW should just end this show already.
I watch the show but I agree. Better to cancel it now so they can have no cliffhangers at the end of this season or do what they did with No Tomorrow where there’s some final episode online.
Are people idiots here. Its on cw’s toughest Night and CW has lower rated shows they renew. Its also in its 3rd year. Its actually on par with spring ratings. The show is in no danger and doing fine as is.
you crazy this show’s budget is high for CW they can’t afford a show like this, they need viewership (cw’s budget is lower than cbs you can tell they can’t afford the vfx /sfx/…for a character like this ). This is why CBS cancelled it and the low ratings didn’t help too . I don’t understand why they haven’t fired the writing staff, stunt coordinator, the producers ect like seriously ?!!more than 50% drop on cbs wasn’t enough to fire them ,add another 50% from the 6 millions who tuned in for the season 1 final after the move to… Read more »
Ratings for this type of show have dropped across the board. Monday is also the hardest night of the week in terms of competition. Thankfully the producers have the knowledge and experience to see this.
“Knowledge and experience ” are you joking?! , lol you’re talking about a cw teen soap opera level producers. Hhhhhh
Exactly what I was thinking
Plus they have the Netflix deal and also the CW app. And Supergirl does well in the +7. Shows like Supergirl don’t live and die by live ratings. Yes, Supergirl is just fine.
It’s not going to get cancelled. Before the season is over, and with the Legion coming. Some comic book fans will return to the show. It’s likely to be the CW #3 show when it’s all said and done by season’s end. Mark my words.
Tha is, if the writers have any brain cells at all, they will focus on the comic book aspect of the show, and not the soap opera of last season that nearly killed the show.
