The new series on FX, Terriers, has been garnering some solid reviews. But, how did it do in the ratings? Should it continue for many years or be put to sleep…er, cancelled?
Terriers follows a pair of unorthodox and unlicensed private detectives. They’ll take just about any job, no matter how small or how strange. The show stars Donal Logue, Michael Raymond-James, Kimberly Quinn, Laura Allen, Rockmond Dunbar, and Jamie Denbo.
Per the overnight ratings, the Terriers premiere looks to be underwhelming at best. The debut attracted a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and about 1.6 million total viewers. While cable ratings are typically smaller than those of the major networks, FX has seen much better.

To put it in perspective, in September 2008, Sons of Anarchy debuted to a 1.2 rating in the key demo and 2.53 million viewers. This past March, Justified’s premiere brought in a 1.5 demo rating and 4.15 million.
Even Nip/Tuck, which had sharply declined over the years, averaged a 0.8 in the demo and 1.7 million viewers for its final season — in the same Wednesday night timeslot.
So, Terriers has gotten off to a very poor start. FX is planning to pair repeats with new installments of Sons of Anarchy. It seems doubtful but maybe this will help. Right now, it doesn’t look like Terriers will survive past its first season of 13 episodes.
But, what do you think? Is Terriers worth watching or should it be cancelled? Cancel or keep it?

I think it could get a second season.
FX isn’t afraid to give a show a second season – much like USA – and allow its audience to be built. Also, Shawn Ryan has more than a little goodwill with the network and with Fox in general (The Shield, The Unit, and Lie To Me all had varying levels of involvement from Fox so he’s more than made them money). I think he, over most everyone, would get a second season on FX.
KEEP IT! THE STORY KEEPS MOVING. NEVER BORING AND VERY ENTERTAINING! MY FAVORITE NEW SHOW. KEEP IT!
Loaded with great actors and shot in the San Diego area which is very cool. Some of the scenes are very intense but others seem clumsy. I hope the scripts improve as the show progresses because I love the characters and their chemistry is spot on. Rockmond Dunbar is special and is the adult on the playground with the whistle. He is the glue to the show and I will hang on.
I’m just now finally getting around to this show in my DVR. I’m enjoying it and I also think the ratings have something to do with the lack of promotion. It wasn’t until 2 weeks left of Rescue Me that I even knew Donal Logue was starring in this show cause it was the first time I had seen something other than a dog promo for the show.
I love this show and hope it survives. I am disappointed in FX for lack of promotion. I myself only stumbled upon it by accident but thankfully I did. I am not sure why a company would put money and time into a project and not promote it at all?
I don’t like getting interested in a television series, because it could be gone in a few weeks. Despite that, I have gotten hooked on Terriers. I hope FX gives it a chance. The show is worth it. The characters are believable. Winston is great. I will hope that FX has faith in the show.
I’m w/ you. I think Terriers is funny and witty. I love Donal Logue and Michael Raymond James. I like how each of the characters are dripping with sarcasm and arrogance. I think it would be a mistake for FX to cancel this show, because although I am a big fan of Sons of Anarchy and Rescue Me, I think Terriers gives off a more relaxed side of humor that other shows on television these days does not have.
I started watching Terriers after reading an excellent review in The Wall Street Journal. For me, Terriers fills the void left by Monk, and in some ways Terriers is even better – I like the complicated plots which carry over from one show to the next, and the hilarious patter between the two unlikely heroes; I love all the surprising twists and turns and seeing the seamy underbelly of L. A. I love hard-boiled detective shows and this fills the bill nicely. I love the dogs! I hope the show continues. The writing shows much thought and wry humor. Woof!
I am with Beth. There was barely any promotion for the show, which is different from other other FX shows that are given very large promotions. I was always seeing something for Rescue Me, Damages, Sons of Anarchy, etc. when they were starting.
Sons of Anarchy seemed to have a much bigger pre-show promotion in the weeks before it aired. I barely remember even seeing a commerical for this new show.
It looks like it has potential but after this very same network canceled the Riches a couple of years ago, they lost my trust. If it was a series where each episode has it’s own storyline , I’d take a chance with it but I don’t trust them enough to invest the time watching this on a regular basis. I don’t know what kind of ratings they expect there at FX but they have some great ideas and terrific talent but unfortunately there’s no other reason to watch that channel so people forget it’s there and forget what channel number… Read more »
Enjoyed the pilot. As previously said, it is not the typical crime show. It makes you think. Sort of like the Show Life which was on NBC until the Leno experiment kicked it off. I like the interaction between the partners and ex-wife and girlfriend. Looks promising. Hope it sticks. FX does a great job with these shows, The Shield, Damages, Sons, Justified (great new show also), Rescue Me, etc. Thanks for the great entertainment FX.
I enjoyed it. Seemed more like real people, more vulnerable and quirky.
Looks promising to me. Unconventional, smart. I’m sick of the cookie-cutter network Cop/CSI-type shows where everyone speaks on cue instead of like the characters are conversing. These guys at look and sound like they are more than one-dimensional paperdolls who are dressed by the wardrobe dept. to sell the latest trends at JC Penney or whoever is sponsoring the particular episode. I honestly think the low premier viewership is as much due to the odd name as anything. Anyone who didn’t see the later commercials, or is just looking at what’s on in the tv listings, probably thinks it’s about… Read more »
Hey, I liked the pilot–liked how they didn’t fill in the entire backstory. Lots of great detail stuff too–like the song in Hank’s head that he sings to Britt, who then can’t keep it out of his head. Hubby and I do that all the time! And the bad guy was so reasonable and ordinary. Nice change, cuz you know he’s going to get badder as they go along.
Let it roll!
