The staff at Chastain Memorial has been let go. To little surprise, FOX has cancelled The Resident so that it won’t be back for a seventh season.
A medical drama series, The Resident TV show stars Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greenwood, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Jane Leeves, Anuja Joshi, Jessica Lucas, Miles Fowler, Kaley Ronayne, and Andrew McCarthy. The series follows a group of doctors at Chastain Memorial Hospital, as they face personal and professional challenges on a daily basis. Although its motto is, “Committed to excellence,” the hospital is staffed with human beings, and humans are flawed. The staff includes Chief Resident Conrad Hawkins (Czuchry), resident internist Devon Pravesh (Dayal), cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. AJ Austin (Warner), veteran doctor Randolph Bell (Greenwood), neurosurgery resident Billie Sutton (Lucas), surgical intern Leela Devi (Joshi), emergency doctor Kincaid “Cade” Sullivan (Ronayne), renowned pediatric surgeon Ian Sullivan (McCarthy), and CEO Dr. Kit Voss (Leeves).
Airing on Tuesday nights, the sixth season of The Resident averaged a 0.34 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.77 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (includes all DVR playback through 3:00 AM). Compared to season five, that’s down by 19% in the demo and down by 11% in viewership. In the live+7 day ratings, episodes picked up an average of 60% more viewers.
While The Resident has been one of FOX’s most-watched scripted series, the show was nearly cancelled a year ago during negotiations with the series’ studio, 20th Television (now owned by Disney). The cancellation doesn’t come as a surprise this year since the show’s sets have been taken down and much of the furniture has gone up for auction.
In response to the cancellation, Resident co-creator Amy Holden Jones wrote, “It was a great run. The Resident lives on Hulu where you can watch commercial free. Today is a day of gratitude for our amazing cast and crew and the life altering experience we shared.”
The Resident won’t be back for the 2023-24 season, but FOX hasn’t given up on medical dramas. The network recently gave a series order to a new show titled Doc.
THR reports that Czuchry is set to join the next season of FX’s American Horror Story, which is also produced by 20th Television.
What do you think? Have you kept up with The Resident TV series on FOX? Are you disappointed that this medical drama has been cancelled and won’t be back for a seventh season?
Extremely disappointed to read about this. I have enjoyed this show and all the actors who do such an amazing job at portraying their characters! I wish another network would pick it up.
Very disappointed, one of my favorite shows, this is a big mistake. We have many bad shows which are still on & we cancel the good ones like The Resident!
Very disappointing
Will really miss this show. There are multiple medical shows but this one was one of my favorites.
Good luck and thanks for great viewing to the cast.
So upset!! Always looked forward to Tuesdays watching The Resident. Loved all their characters. Such a sad outcome. Bye bye Fox.
Big mistake.. this was a GREAT show
I looked forward to this show every Tuesday night & as well as my friends & family. Poor decision made by FOX to discontinue this show as it was informative too. I won’t be watching the reality shows so you lost me as a viewer FOX!
What a shame. One of the better medical shows. Once again Fox cancels a scripted show but retains their inane reality shows. Doesn’t say much for the execs running Fox TV.
I’m extremely disappointed. They keep idiotic shows on like “Masked Singer” and the new gem “Farmer wants a wife” while canceling “The Resident” which I felt was not only good TV but also informative on!medical issues.
The cancelation doesn’t surprise me. They killed the show when Nikki died.
I disagree. Emily VanCamp left, because she had a baby. She wanted to focus on her family, and had no plans to return. There was no way to write Nic out, besides killing her that wouldn’t have destroyed Conrad/Nic’s marriage. Anything else would have meant writing them out of character. They were solid, so they’d never divorce each other or cheat. Fans would have been even angrier over an out of character separation. And since Emily made it clear she was done, an indefinite coma would have just given fans false hope. Killing Nic kept her in character, as well… Read more »
I’m thoroughly disappointed that “The Resident” has been canceled. It has been a program that I looked forward to every week on the TV schedule ever since it premiered 7 years ago. The acting was first rate as were the scripts and the overall quality of the series. Kudos to the entire cast and team of “The Resident”! Your commitment and efforts are acknowledged and were greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I stopped watching this about 3 years ago, and it would seem so did a lot of others…. the medical drama series has probably run it’s course for now, i mean Grey’s needs to just stop as well, and I’m sure Chicago Med has been on borrow time since about season 3….. Of course, the only risk of the demise of all these scripted shows is that the content creators think this is an opportunity to pollute our screens with more Housewives from wherever and those Kardashian money grabbers. The resident has run it’s course, it will be interesting to… Read more »
A lot of people may have stopped watching The Resident after Nic died, but that’s not why it was canceled. Money is. Ratings have slipped over the past two seasons, but it was still the third most watched show on FOX. And, it was even stronger in delayed viewing. This is more about the fact FOX doesn’t own The Resident, since they sold 20th Television to Disney in 2019. Ever since, FOX has licensed most of their shows from outside studios, requiring them to pay licensing fees for most of their lineup. That gets expensive, as they get older. It… Read more »
While this isn’t surprising, it’s still disappointing. The season finale works well as a perfect series finale. However, cancellation itself isn’t really the issue here. FOX renewed shows with worse ratings, because they’re cheaper. Clearly, this is a money issue. That much is obvious. Contracts are up, and it seems like FOX didn’t want to renegotiate. Ratings aren’t the problem here, money is. The Resident’s the third most watched show on FOX, behind 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star. It’s eighth in demo, but four of the shows beating it out are animated shows. According to TV Line: “At the time,… Read more »
I’m so sad and angry! Love this show!!
I, too, really liked the show and the relevant issues it brought up.
Good news, we have a lot of ******** medical, fire, crime contents on TV.
