There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

Way to go, CBS. Now the schedule is clear for you to put on another show about an eccentric (Doctor/Private Detective/Lawyer/Cop/Psychic) with a (Hot/Tough/Wisecracking) female partner who is so good at his job he can get away with anything. No wonder you
This sucks! I’m a 31 year old woman & I LOVE The Unit!! Why can’t Fox pick it up since they produce the show anyway… make money on the new episodes & money on the re-runs as well… win-win. CBS just made a HUGE mistake. Now the only good thing CBS has is NCIS… Shame on you CBS, you take out the good shows & fill up on crap. You need to go back to broadcast school!!
This show rocked, We would DVR it so we could speed through the commercials it was so intriging. Its airing time was frequently pushed back due to NCAA games and golf so catching it was difficult at times especially recording it. We lost the ending of 3 shows because of timing. Smart exec’s would snap this up and get Snakedog to “take out the target” being CBS brass.
I watch this show in the UK. It has to be one of the best programs around. Typical that when you like something soooo much that people then decide to pull it. How is it that shows like Lost, 24 and such seem to have endless budget sand get recommissioned each year without fail. I do not have a military background, but am abreast of what is going on in the world. Whilst entertaining I believe that this program does give the viewer an insight into SF OPS. A sad day indeed. Off to AMAZON to get the whole series… Read more »
I’ve enjoyed this show since season one, but have feared its cancellation was soon upon us. Earlier when it was announced that a fifth season was planned, I was very happy, but this is just sad, sad news. :o(
As an ARMY wife, with a husband that was special forces, this show gives me great pride to see what our military does for us! My husband watches the show and says for the most part it is done well and accurately. I like seeing the boys out on their missions, while life is still going on back at the base. I hope if CBS is so unpatriotic to cancel one of the best shows they have, maybe another broadcaster will pick it up and put it in a GOOD time spot where more people can fall in love with… Read more »
WTF?
How does 24 make it seven seasons, and Lost makes it like 20, they even had to have a season dedicated to catch everyone up, and Unit, the best show in a long time, only makes it to 4?
That’s just stupid!
CBS is a joke. They have killed all the good shows, and will continue, no one wants to see the Real World BS.
24 up until Sutherland left was an excellent show. Lost was lousy from the start so I agree with you there.
I am really disappointed. I love that show and how it shows the abilities and dedication of our armed forces. It is great psychologically for me to see us win with great courage, daring and skill. There is no other show like it and I hope some other network picks it up. How about FOX? Fans, call CBS and give them grief. Fans have brought shows back before that were cancelled, let’s do it again.
CBS has certainly dropped the ball on this one…I hope another station picks it up for season 5.
This is really unfortunate. It had decent ratings (in top 30 of all shows) and was not too expensive to produce. Network TV is killing itself.
WOW, what a disappointment. but then again that’s par for the course for CBS. After all it’s CBS that has always ranked last because there Exect’s just like the Auto Exect’s keep making horrible choices. Way to go CBS, keep on making S*@!. Maybe one day you will go under like Chrysler….
MAJ D: People didn’t watch The Unit because it was nothing but propaganda – and a horrible show. \o/
And who cares if we’re at war? We’re not really doing anything good, are we?
What a shame. Soldiers in the field wait every week for the new episode. This show relates. Other shows are CRAP. People did not watch this good show because they do not remember we are at war.
Seriously I hate CBS and will no longer support any show that they air. The only reason I even watch this channel is because of The Unit. Not only that the Big wigs at CBS know not what they do. How can you expect this show to get more viewers when you don’t even promote the show, every time I tried to watch this show at it’s schedule time it was for nothing, because the garbage Cold Case would go at least 30-45 mins past it’s ending time causing the Unit to start airing at 11-11:30PM. How can you expect… Read more »
Boo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! too much left for next season on The Unit to be tied up next season. Poor form!!!
