Once Upon a Time wrapped its fifth season on ABC last night, and fans only received a glimpse of what next season will look like when it returns in the fall. Do not read on if you have not watched last night’s finale.
The finale began with Henry going to New York City on a mission to destroy magic after Gold connects the Olympus Crystal to all of the magic in Storybrooke. The mission then becomes for Gold, Regina, and Emma to find Henry before he can do that because it will destroy their home forever.
That was just part of the action though. The quest Henry sets out on has complications. It unleashes magic in the rest of the world, and that causes problems back at home. After Zelena opens a portal to another realm, the portal does not close and it sucks Snow, Charming, Hook, and Zelena into an unknown realm. Their journey only begins there.
In that new realm, the heroes meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Hyde has a problem with the Dark One. Who doesn’t have a problem with Gold, through? By the end of the episode, Henry not only ended magic – he also restored it.
Hyde will play a major role in the upcoming sixth season. He found a way to Storybrooke, and he will take over. Lana Parrilla confirmed Hyde’s role in her comments to Hollywood Life. She said:
“The other heroes — Hook, the Charmings and Zelena — are pulled into a portal. They get pulled into this portal and enter this new world that we haven’t seen. They’ll encounter new characters and some new villains. There’s like a patient who’s in an institution and his overbearing warden. Those are just a few characters who are going to appear in season 6 for a period of time.”
Hyde is not the only villain fans will see in season six. Before the end of the episode, Regina separated herself from the Evil Queen with a potion from Dr. Jekyll. It is the same potion that separated him from Hyde. She tried to kill her evil side, but she was not successful. The episode ended with the return of the Evil Queen.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Adam Horowitz teased:
“The paradigm for what season six will be is a little bit different than what we’ve done the last few years, and we’re very excited by it. It involves our core group of characters, Storybrooke and flashing back to other realms. It doesn’t necessarily mean a journey to someplace else. I think at the end of the finale you’ll get a little bit of a taste of how we’re going to approach it — it’s both a little something old and something new.”
Hyde is definitely the new, and with the return of the Evil Queen, she is definitely old. Regina will have to fight herself next season.
