Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.
Loved the show. Really hate to see it cancelled. So many bad shows on other networks don’t understand when a really good one comes along its not given a good chance
It’s not cancelled it’s the creator and writers idea to only do one season. It’s a story that’s beginning and ending in one season. You shouldn’t even really call it a season. It’s more of a miniseries.
The only show besides breaking bad that I’ve watched in years
One more thing it’s the only show on TV that my wife will watch with me. Lots of people on vacation in July, so ratings are probably dinged up recently.
That sucks I love this show it’s better then half the crap they have on fox
Don’t cancel
I was always under the impression that this was a miniseries and never expected a second season. I love the show and would happily watch a second season if they were to make one.
noooooooooooo why
I am so sad they aren’t returning for a second season!! One of my favorites of all time!!
Don’t cancel awesome show!
This is an amazing show and has endless possibilities of where it can go. Not to mention it’s their 2nd strongest show in the summer lineup. Why wouldn’t there be a 2nd season?!? Wtf??
dont cancel!!! ONly good show on TV!!!
This was the one show I would watch first from everything on the DVR this summer. If Fox drops the show then I am sure another station will pick it up or Netflix. My guess is Fox will dump it and slap the almost 4 million viewers in the face to air some dumb reality show. Over the past few years Fox has become just like the other 3 big commercial networks an forgot it roots during the 1990’s with great shows like the X-Files. I am sure Fox’s top brass would be canceling the X-Files after one season for… Read more »
I started watching Wayward Pines because I knew it would end after 10 episodes. Personally I can’t imagine a township of so few people fighting the Abbies season after season. I think the network is smart in making it a mini series. A good one too.
I love wayward pines and everyone in it! A stupid move for Fox to cancel it! Best show in a long time!
Don’t cancel!!!!!!!!!!!!!
