The song is over — at least for now. NBC has cancelled the Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist TV show so, there won’t be a third season on the network. However, some behind the show aren’t giving up hope yet.
A musical comedy-drama series, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist stars Jane Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar, and Mary Steenburgen. Zoey Clarke (Levy) is a whip-smart computer coder who’s making her way in San Francisco. After an unusual event, Zoey, who always preferred podcasts over pop songs, suddenly starts to hear the innermost wants, thoughts, and desires of the people around her – her family, co-workers, and complete strangers – through popular songs. The second season picked up after a tragedy and Zoey and her family began to recalibrate and navigate their new normal. As she found herself in a new dynamic at work and in her love life, Zoey’s musical powers continued to both awkwardly complicate and inform her worldview as she attempted to rediscover joy and connect with those around her.
The second season of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist averages a 0.35 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.82 million viewers. Compared to season one, that’s down by 16% in the demo and down by 9% in viewership in the live+same day ratings. It was one of the lowest-rated scripted shows on NBC.
Negotiations had been underway to relocate Zoey’s to the Peacock streaming service for a third and final season of eight episodes but the deal didn’t happen. Lionsgate, which produces the series, is said to be shopping the show elsewhere and there has supposedly been some interest.
Zoey’s creator, Austin Winsberg, and executive producer Paul Fieg took to social media today to encourage fans of the show not to give up hope yet.
I believe we can have a real chance somewhere else. But the more fan support we can throw behind it – the better. Please tweet #saveZoeysplaylist. Let’s get it trending and let the powers that be know the appetite is strong. Also open to any other suggestions to prove the love.

If you love @ZoeysPlaylist as much as we do, we need your help. NBC and Peacock have decided not to renew us. We want nothing more than to keep this wonderful show going. I feel like it’s 21 years ago all over again when Freaks & Geeks got cancelled. Help us find a new home. ❤️🙏 https://t.co/79CPDniKFL

What do you think? Did you enjoy the Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist TV show on NBC? Would you watch season three elsewhere?
No surprises there. The show was never really that popular. I enjoyed some of the musical bits, but never to a point I wanted to binge watch the series.
Would love to see Season 3!! Such a delightful and enjoyable series!!
I love this unique show. I will watch if it is picked up elsewhere.
Please save zoey’ playlist. Such a light
Oh, on another note, the show was one of the most whimsical feel-good shows on TV, in spite of it’s sometimes dark subject matter. Isn’t this the same network that cancelled the delightful “Suburbgatory”? Same on you, NBC!
No, “Suburgatory” was on ABC
I’m disappointed, but the cancelling was not surprising to me. The season finale had a “series finale” vibe to it. This season was much weaker than last, but I still watched faithfully. I hope it gets picked up somewhere. Preferably on Peacock or HBO-Max where I don’t have to spend any more money. These streaming platforms are the like highway robbers of old.
NBC has disappointed me again. First you cancel Debris, now Zoey. Please don’t cancel Manifest. I don’t know why the executives at the network consistently return to the old and familiar themes and refuse to give all of the above mentioned shows with new, different concepts more of a chance. Zoey’s Playlist was a wonderfully delightful escape with a fantastic, inclusive cast and interesting storyline. I mean, who would have thought a show that explores family, friendship and living with a debilitating condition and eventual death could be combined with singing and dancing and work? But it did and brave… Read more »
It is time for writers to have their own streaming platform. This show is amazing, cast, characters, songs, written with life stories. Not like the trash reality shows they keep for 20 years. SUV dead follow up dead shows that are tired. Yet a creative show for everyone and family no. NBC CBS ABC Peacock I hope they realize no one will be watching. These show should and could go in for seasons with great characters writers story telling.
I enjoyed the 1st season, honestly the second season turn me off with the political undertone, all the drama with Simons character. My daughter and I lost interst in about the forth episode. We did muttle through and enjoyed the last 3 of season two. I think with all we hear on the news and social media platform today its nice to watch a show that takes you mind off of the reality and in my opinon as soon as all that drama was written into the story line viewers lossed interest. TV is shows should make you smile and… Read more »
If the show is not continued I will be okay with it because I felt that ending was more respectful and gave more closure than most shows are allowed are allowed when stations just dump them.
We can have 17 seasons of an extremely mediocre medical show and 19 seasons of a show that capitalizes on sex crimes, yet cancel a show that is very creative, one of a kind, fun, intelligent- and portrays feelings/misgivings/happiness/sadness/ friendships/support in normal situations (albeit with songs- but that’s what draws you in). I think whoever makes these decisions lacks creativity. We want something different. TV options are all the same- medical, law, firemen/policeman dramas- you can recite the plot lines in your sleep. Too bad the powers that be don’t have the foresight or courage to keep the intelligent, creatively… Read more »
I’m begging you not to cancel Zoeys Playlist. In a year full of gloom and doom, COVID, mass shootings, etc. Zoeys Playlist was a bright spot. It was so much fun and so different from everything else. Do we REALLY need another police or hospital drama?? Please keep Zoey, we could all use a heartsong
I’d rather watch another police or medical drama than this ridiculous show
Seriously?!!! One of the few TV shows that’s so different from everything else!!! I love the show, the characters, the actors. I really do hope someone else picks it up. 🙁
WHY !!!! NBC Do y’all KEEP Canceling all of the WONDERFUL and ENTERTAINING TV Shows !!!!! This has a Fantastic Cast and is a Amazing Show the Concept was a bit different and honestly this is what drew me into checking it out in the beginning of the 1st Season .. As soon as I watched the 1st episode I was hooked I Loved It .. I Truly Hope Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist get picked up by another Channel or Streaming Service, preferably one that I already an Subscribed to, lol.. Keep Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist going with a new Season Please… Read more »
Sadly that is what entertainment (films, network TV, comics) is now days: safe rehashing of proven formulas with minimal risk.
That is why network TV will eventually lose all it’s viewers to streaming services (even though two of those are or are becoming formulaic too).
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Idiot network!
