Last season, CBS introduced 10 new shows during the regular 2016-17 season. They cancelled half of them and renewed the other five. How will their new programming do in the ratings for the 2017-18 season? Stay tuned.
CBS shows this season (so far): 60 Minutes, 9JKL, The Amazing Race, The Big Bang Theory, Big Brother, Big Brother: Celebrity Edition, Blue Bloods, Bull, Code Black, Criminal Minds, Elementary, Hawaii Five-0, Instinct, Kevin Can Wait, Life in Pieces, Living Biblically, MacGyver, Madam Secretary, Man with a Plan, Me Myself & I, Mom, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, Pink Collar Crimes, Ransom, Salvation, Scorpion, SEAL Team, Superior Donuts, Survivor, TKO: Total Knock Out, Undercover Boss: Celebrity Edition, Whistleblower, Wisdom of the Crowd, and Young Sheldon.
There’s lots of data that CBS execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here’s how the network’s shows are doing so far.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make way for something else?
My predictions: NCIS – 100% Bull – 98% Seal Team – 90% Blue Bloods – 89% NCIS New Orleans – 87% NCIS LA: 84% Kevin Can Wait – 80% Mom – 80% Life In Pieces – 78% Man With a Plan – 75% Hawaii 5-0 – 70% Macgyver – 65% Instinct – 57% Swat – 55% Criminal Minds – 50% Superior Donuts – 48% Scorpion – 40% 9JKL – 23% Living Biblically – 9% Madam Secretary – 4% NCIS and Bull are certain to be renewed, but due to Pauly leaving, I feel NCIS will get 2 or 3 more… Read more »
As long as Criminal Minds gets renewed I will die happy
Please, please do not cancel Madame Secretary. It is the single most intelligent show on TV. For those of us who really like to think about what is going on in the world, it is absolutely wonderful. Both the stars and the plot are excellent.
Please move Kevin can wait to superior donuts spot! Can we can wait shouldn’t be on spot it At this time it’s on now! He can’t keep ratings! Enough is enough with this crappy show in him in the prime spot of the day
I agree that its not good anymore I watched off and on and I know that much I only watch as long as the hetty chemistry is a part of it
Kevin can wait, sucks now that you killed the Mom off. I love Leah but the story line sucks now.
Please do not cancel Madam Secretary! We eagerly anticipate each episode and the content has become so timely with the current situation in Washington.
Hawaii Five-0 is great and so is Scorpion…… I hope both shows get renewed especially Scorpion, it’s witty and loveable
Please do not cancel Madam Secretary. As an adult, it’s one of my favorite shows because it’s smart, educational with some wit thrown in so it’s not boring! I love this show! Does every show have to appeal to the millenniums, can’t us more mature adults have shows to enjoy as well!! If it’s not doing well in the ratings, it’s certainly not because of the cast nor the plots. Maybe you should consider a different evening, one that doesn’t conflict so frequently with sports.
Please do not cancel Madam Secretary. Love this show.
How can a show rate red/negative when it was not even on TV? Some shows did not even air. I’m confused
These are season average ratings. The percentages represent comparisons to previous season averages.
life in pieces , Kevin can wait , man with a plain , 9jkl , all crap! I have watched CBS for years if you do not want me to watch it anymore just keep putting all these crap shows on air.
99% of CBS sitcoms in general are all crap. We need to get past the laugh track
In the first place Madam Secretary was moved to 10 pm, reall? that is a great show but working people can not stay up till 1o:45 (when it usually starts) to watch it!!!!
