It wasn’t a positive return for Serena and friends. The season premiere garnered a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with just 1.37 million viewers. That’s a year-to-year decline of 30% in the demo and 26% in viewership. Other than Friday night’s Nikita, this was the weakest scripted premiere of the season and not a good sign for the show’s future.
Reference point: The 2010-11 season averaged a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.65 million viewers.
Note: These ratings are collected by the Nielsen company and are the final national numbers. These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings and are reported on by most other outlets. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the Gossip Girl TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a sixth season?

I am 49 and not embarrassed one bit to admit that I am hooked on GG. It’s one of the most entertaining shows I’ve seen in a long time. I LOVE the shows concept. It would be a shame to end the show without tying up all the lose ends and I.m sorry to say this but a measly 12 eps could not give the show and all of it’s loyal followers the proper send off they deserve. Don’t disappoint everyone with sloppy writing, please. DVD sales would definitely suffer. If the show has to end, why not make it… Read more »
Sorry about the typos all. I was disabled by a stroke and have to type one handed now. Anyway, I hope to see more posts in support of saving GG. 🙂
Take care,
Diane
It does look like Gossip Girl will return for one final 13 Ep season 6.

I know everyone likes to shout GG down but we all know GG makes a lot of money through international markets etc. I have just checked numerous iTunes and GG is STILL no 4 on US iTunes (The only CW show still in the top 5).
No 1 on the UK iTunes site including France. These are all major markets which bring in all this extra revenue.
Gossip Girls will be renewed 100% for a Final Season 7
Please don’t cancel Gossip Girls Please Keep up the good work.
GG will be renewed 100% for a Final Season 6. Please read this article on the CW so you get a better understanding on how this network is developing and how it makes it’s profits. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/08/idUS369852497220111208 The CW is less reliant on advertising revenue/ratings. Instead they have a mixed portfolio of income from many other means. Syndication is changing the way networks make money especially (The CW). (Posted last week by another reader) This is exactly why GG is safe because the biggest challenge the CW faces is developing new shows that will be the SPNs and GGs of the… Read more »
They’ve been moving in circles and it looks like they are spinning out of control!! Ever since they decided to make Chuck a ‘good boy’ I felt very suspicious. Are we seeing the first signs of this shows ending? If they kill off Chuck Bass, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’ll quit GG. It’s been a tough ride since the second half of season 4 and letting the only reason most people still watch GG for will be an irreversible disaster for the show. I’m really hoping they cooked up something good (but please don’t repeat the amnesia… Read more »
The only CW show that I even remotely like is “Nikita”, and I hardly watch that. I do not like “Gossip Girl”. At all. Never did.
GOSSIP GIRL WAS ADJUSTED UP TODAY – 0.7 A-18-49 – 1.5 W18-34 – STRING STRONG IN THE KEY DEMO
I am glad that they are making up their loss through sales of the show, but I think you hit it on the head, Marc, but pointing out that the whole network looks to be in trouble.
I mean..hello..wake up people!! No everybody it’s from USA. I am from Romania and I watch this show online, and a lot of people do this. Gossip girl is a really good show so please don’t cancel the 6th season.
I’m referring to the 18-34 Demo which Gossip Girl does very well in! Dawn Ostroff who was the previous head of the CW said that GG has a very high following Online and around the world and that even though the CW was running on a loss that they made up for this with ITunes/DVD Sales where GG ranks No 1. I do understand that the show has run it’s course but they are all contracted until next year so I reckon they will create a 12 EP season 6 and then finish. Looking at the Demos for the other… Read more »
Marc, what demo are you looking at? A .7 in the demo is horrendous. Being number 1 on iTunes isn’t a big deal. The downloads on iTunes are much smaller than the numbers of TV viewers who watch the show on the screen. Gossip Girl has a very small niche that it fills. Somehow the CW is expert at finding the smallest target audience for its shows. The network really needs to consider getting away from shows that mostly just attract viewers who get their income from an allowance or babysitting.
I love Gossip girl!!! Its my favorite show! i never want it to end
What I never understand with GG is how it’s numbers are low but it does well in the Target Demo? and obviously it has a huge Online following as it went straight in at NO 1 on ITunes here in the US and UK
I hope the numbers improve and that the network takes into consideration that Terra Nova premiered at the same time. I’m an ardent Gossip Girl fan, but Terra Nova was a television EVENT that I had to watch live, so I taped Gossip Girl. There were probably others that tuned in to see what Terra Nova was about rather than watch Gossip Girl, too. But Nikita did that badly? That’s not a good sign… I’ll admit I didn’t like it at first because I was a huge fan of the ’90s USA Network series, but Birkhoff and Owen have grown… Read more »
