Though Harry’s Law was the most-watched scripted TV show on NBC this season, the network cancelled it. As I’ve suggested in the past, advertisers favor shows that attract those in the 18-49 demographic. Though Harry’s Law had a lot of viewers, the legal series had some of the lowest demographic numbers on the network.
When asked why Kathy Bates and company had been let go, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said, “It was a difficult decision. Everyone here respects Harry’s Law a lot but we were finding it hard to grow the audience for it. Its audience skewed very old. It’s hard to monetize that.”
Bates broke the news of the show’s cancellation over the weekend. She wrote to fans, “Sad news today. Harry’s Law will not be renewed for a 3rd season. We are all terribly sad. Many thanks for all your support.”

The actress later noted, “Waiting for this verdict was tough. We wrapped a month ago so it was a very long wait!”
Bates reconciled, “Tough day getting used to the idea of no more Harry. Think I’ll keep her with me 4ever.”
When asked if there was a possibility that Harry’s Law might move to cable, Bates responded, “No hope.” But, responding to an inquiry last night on the subject, Bates wrote, “Not sure, but don’t think so.”
Justine Lupe, who played Phoebe Blake, wrote, “Sad day. Little bit of heartbreak. What a gift to had had this time.”
Actress Karen Olivo, who joined the cast in season two as Cassie Reynolds, responded with a message to her castmates, “It was an honor, my friends!”
Nathan Corddry, who’d been playing Adam Branch since the show began, noted, “I’d thank everyone individually, but the list is too long.Never was happier professionally. Thank you for a wondrful 2 years. #tough2swallow”
What do you think? Are you going to miss Harry’s Law as much as the cast will? If the show did move to another channel, would you follow it?
Harry’s Law, being one of the most well written series with a stellar cast, had brought me back to watching NBC.. However, whatever network picks it up will have me as a regular viewer and NBC will lose my viewership.
I think NBC is making a real bad move, but perhaps someone will have enough smarts to pick up the show.
Why does everyone, including TV networks, write off people over 49??? This show was a breath of fresh air for us “old folks”. It was bright, funny, touching and real and Kathy Bates was brilliant in it. It was the highlight of my week. I think we “old folks” should all boycott NBC!!
Ugh, I am in the 18-49 group and watched this show faithfully. Idiots on NBC don’t know a good thing even when right in their face.
NBC is crazy! This is one of the best shows on television today. I would follow this show to any network it would move to. What a waste of a great show with great talent. Shame on you NBC!!!!
I’m 53 years old, and I’ve loved Kathy Bates for many, many years. She’s so “normal person”. She’s every woman. She’s my neighbour. She’s my sister. I’ve loved this show from the very first. I think whoever decided to cancel this show deserves to be strung up and horse-whipped till he learns some sense!!
I’d follow that show anyway!!!
As usual, NBC makes the stupid move of canceling a wonderfully scripted, fabulously cast
show that plays like a novel one cannot put down. I am watching more and more ABC and CBS and PBS. I saw that GCB was also canned. No wonder NBC is in the basement. Thoroughly disgusted lady……..
Your decision to appeal only to the 18-49 demographic seems to be a guarantee that they will remain crude and rude. That is what the programs you have left on are about. The reality shows do not educate the viewers about the real world. You have made such a big mistake.

I am saddened by this news. Harry’s Law will be sorely missed! Great writing, fantastic cast, and just an all around fun show. I really looked forward to it each week.
Hello McFly!!!! What is wrong with NBC? Keep Harry’s Law
That is so sad! One of the best shows on TV – I’m 30 and love it!
so very sad – we love Harrys Law – I am so mad that they cancelled it. I hope someone picks it up – we will watch.
I would watch it no matter where it showed up! Great show, great cast, some really smart scripts. Raised awareness of some tough topics, too. Mature demographic isn’t marketable?? Baby boomers have money and we spend it. I hope some cable network picks it up….NBC doesn’t deserve it.
