After being on the bubble for several seasons, CBS has finally cancelled The New Adventures of Old Christine. There’s a chance that it may be saved by another network but odds would have been better if this had happened in previous years.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows the challenges of Christine Campbell (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) , a neurotic single mom who has a hard time finding a relationship and juggling her responsibilities at home and work. Others in her life include her low-key brother, Matthew (Hamish Linklater); best friend and business partner, Barbara (Wanda Sykes); young son Ritchie (Trevor Gagnon); irresponsible ex-husband, Richard (Clark Gregg); and his current love, “New Christine” (Emily Rutherfurd). Often popping up to make “Old Christine” feel even more incompetent are “mean mommies,” Marly and Lindsay (Tricia O’Kelley and Alex Kapp Horner).
After being part of CBS’ Monday night line-up for two seasons, Old Christine was used to help establish a second comedy block for the network on Wednesday nights. Unfortunately, the experiment wasn’t a big success. Old Christine was barely renewed last season. As there had been in the past, there was talk that ABC might pick it up if CBS had actually cancelled the show.
This season, Old Christine’s numbers have gotten worse and CBS decided to abandon the Wednesday night comedy hour. As a result, the network decided to finally cancel Old Christine.
In past years, Old Christine was attractive to ABC because they weren’t having much success with their own sitcoms. This time around, they already have a well-established night of sitcoms and several new options waiting in the wings.
Still, there is some talk of ABC picking up the series. As of today, the execs at ABC and Warner Bros. are trying to work out the numbers. The deal that Warner Bros. can offer is likely being impacted by how much profit new episodes will bring in syndication.
Last summer, Warner Bros. sold the Old Christine syndication package to Lifetime for some ad time and about $350,000 per episode (compared to 30 Rock episodes which went for $800,000). The sitcom was also sold to local stations in most of the US markets.
Reruns will pop up on cable and local stations in the fall. It remains to be seen if new episodes will be on ABC.
What do you think? Should ABC rescue The New Adventures of Old Christine? Where would you put it — with The Middle, Cougar Town, or someplace else?

I’ve watched The New Adventures since day one. One of the funniest shows out there. Get rid of the crappy so called “reality” shows and bring back Christine Campbell!!!!!!
Please bring this show back. I really connect with it, and I’m sure millions do too. It’s a cooky show with great humor that i felt very comfortable with. I find it hard to be comfortable with a lot of shows. Every second of the show i was laughing. There were very many parts where i almost pissed my pants laughing. I had no idea that it was canceled until now and i had been siting here waiting forever to have it back on tv. ABC and all the other stations shows arent as funny. Sure, The office is hilarious… Read more »
This show makes me laugh out loud, as well as my teenage son! There aren’t many shows that can do that! Going through all of the reruns – hope to see them bring it back!
I also admit that I didn’t start watching this show until it was syndicated. And I was pleasantly surprised at just how funny TNAOOC is. Seriously, the show is THAT GOOD. Bring it back.
I looooove this show please put it back on…its awsome
They have got to be kidding. I live to see the reruns. The show is so true to life and is hilarious. I am hoping that ABC will pick it up. It is a great show that most people can relate to. Please Bring Christine Campbell BACK!!!!!
I think the show is hilarious. It’s nice to see someone from Seinfeld actually having success. The show does mimic a lot of everyday life with most parts exaggerated. It is nice to have some light TV to watch every once in a while. Definitely keep it on!!!
I have been watching The Adventures of New Old Christine and enjoyed them. I am sorry it went off the air since there are very few funny sitcoms anymore. Seems they are all trying to cover so many bases in lifestyles the jokes are few and far between. The ones made are just no longer funny.
Oh, well, money talks..andt the numbers weren’t there. By the way Wednesday night is boring on all channels.
What are they thinking? This is truley one of the funniest shows on TV. I just laugh when Christine laughs, she’s hilarious the whole cast is great they make It work so well. These days who doesn’t need to laugh. BIG BIG mistake for a show that made so many people laugh be taken off the air. Put it on with how I met you’re Mother.
Please bring back the show, The New Adventures of Old Christine, because it takes a lot for me to like a show and CBS just took off the other one I liked called Medium, so this is now the only show that I like and all I get to watch is re-runs and its so funny…Look at all these good comments and how much we all like this show. Please just bring it back to any network and I will always watch it!!
It took me a while of watching the show before I got hooked. Once I became familiar with the characters I really love the show! I think it would do really well back-to-back with “How I Met Your Mother”. That’s another show that took me quiet a while before I even gave it a shot, and now love it! I hope they don’t cancel either of these two shows!!!
The New Adventures of Old Christine is THE funniest show that’s been on since Everybody Loves Raymond. Louis-Dreyfus makes the character strike a chord in yourself, and people you know. And she does this with true talent. The cast works so well off of each other. Everyone can relate to her. Compared to the upcoming schedule that is on the three major networks, (which i had to look up, because i no longer find the network shows to have anything that can keep my attention). I saw The New Adventures on lifetime, and now look for other cable networks that… Read more »
This show was not properly marketed, it couldn’t have been. This is one of the funniest show’s on TV and people weren’t even aware of how well written and realistically funny it was, until recently. I was so dissappointed to find out it was cancelled. Single mom’s must not be the demographic the networks want to market to. I am really hoping someone picks it up, Julia and the cast have done a great job!!
I absolutely love this show. I didn’t know about it before I started seeing reruns on lifetime. But now I am eager to see the new season and there possibly won’t be one. Please bring it back, the cast is hilarious and I’d like to see what happens between Christine and Max.
I love this show! Please bring it back. The characters are put together so well…the new adventures of old Christine is amazingly funny!!!!!
