It sounds like Max will be looking for a new position after the 2022-23 season. It’s been revealed that the New Amsterdam series will be ending with its upcoming fifth season of 13 episodes. The NBC show’s fourth season will resume on Tuesday, April 19th.
A medical drama series, the New Amsterdam TV show stars Ryan Eggold, Janet Montgomery, Freema Agyeman, Jocko Sims, and Tyler Labine, with Michelle Forbes, Sandra Mae Frank, Shiva Kalaiselvan, and Chloe Freeman in recurring roles. Doctor Max Goodwin (Eggold) is a caring physician whose goal is to fix a broken medical system and to provide exceptional care to the people who need it most. He inspires (almost) everyone around him, and will stop at nothing to breathe new life into the understaffed, underfunded, and underappreciated New Amsterdam Medical Center. Those working with Goodwin include Dr. Lauren Bloom (Montgomery), the head of the ER; oncologist Dr. Helen Sharpe (Agyeman); cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Sims); and psychiatrist Dr. Iggy Frome (Labine).
The fourth season of New Amsterdam averages a 0.37 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.25 million viewers. Compared to season three, that’s down by 19% in the demo and down by 10% in viewership in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). The series gains quite a bit in the live+7 day ratings, averaging a 0.73 in the demo with 6.18 million. That’s a gain of 95% and 90%, respectively.
New Amsterdam was renewed for three seasons back in 2020 and the fifth season will complete that order.
“The story of Max Goodwin, and his never-ending commitment to patients at New Amsterdam, has been inspiring,” said Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television & Streaming, according to Deadline. “We’re so grateful to David Schulner, Peter Horton, and our cast and crew for their incredible dedication, talent and collaboration.”
Though New Amsterdam is ending, Eggold has already signed a first-look deal with Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, to develop projects across various platforms.
What do you think? Have you been keeping up with the New Amsterdam TV series? Are you disappointed that there won’t be a sixth season or, is five years a good time to end it?
This probably the best show on television and it should continue for at least another 3 years . It is a shame it is going to end after 5 seasons.
This is a Great Show and needs to remain on Air. Please reconsider; try to show it on a day that will get a lot of watchers. There are some days when these local network channels are boring. The team and theme of the show is not boring its spontaneous and loving. I can possible see an old flame rekindling with Dr Bloom and Dr Reynolds so that could be another season. The return of Dr Sharpe and Dr Goodwin and their marriage and 2nd baby etc. Don’t compete with the air time for other Medical shows. I have hopes… Read more »
This is absolutely the best show on Tv.. why all the breaks? It’s better than the resident— and the good Dr. I love this show… I hope some other network picks it up..
LOL No. Both of those are much better.
Truly disappointed and pissed! Why is it that the good shows get axed and those without a storyline hang on forever. I will no longer watch shows on NBC. This is the only show I look forward to watching. So done!
Very, very disappointed! We look forward to New Amsterdam every week!
A show that will be greatly missed!
My wife and I love the show and hate to see it end. So disappointed in the cancellation decision! Our age group is not even viewed as important.
Disappointed
I’m very New Amsterdam is being cancelled. It’s a great show! I even didn’t mind the breaks that came with the shows. It gave you some more excitement. Very, very sorry to see it go….
Absolutely due to no fault of the show, this is obviously another case of spoiled momentum. On again-off again airing is no way to build audience loyalty, and NBC has done an absolutely awful job of keeping things on the air for more than a couple of months without interruptions by repeats or event programming. If something as indifferently executed as GREY’S ANATOMY can hang around 17 years, why must five seasons be the extent of network investment in something as good as NEW AMSTERDAM? “Too good to last” isn’t a cliche without reason.
I agree with the peoples comment on this site I hate to see it go one of my favorites I hope he can get another series one of my favorite actors. I don’t like the shows how they are doing now play for a while and don’t come back until its time for them three to four months it ruins the show
I love this show so much. I hate that it is being cancelled. The breaks in between episodes is the only problem for viewers.
I’m very disappointed that New Amsterdam will end after Season 5. It’s one of my favorite shows! I do agree with the comment that moving the date & time slot around will tend to lose viewers. It did seem like there were a lot of unexpected breaks as well.
This is an outstanding show that could go on for several more seasons. NBC as always messes all shows up by not keeping them on track. People 18-49 are not the people who watch most TV shows. I guess they think people under 28 over 49 do not watch or count. Not funny for I defend this country for all ages and nationalities! Even the corporate greed monsters who could care less about the shows everyone watches but only their Billions in profits.
Tiey keep canceling the good shows I starting not like nbc so much
I love this show. However when they suspend the shows for several weeks it is hard to keep up with NBC’s schedule. It is once again on another break. People lose interest when a show gets jockeyed around so much.
Exactly how I feel about the show and everything I was going to say. This feeling must be widespread amongst the fans of the show.
