FOX has a new family comedy, Raising Hope, on their schedule but it’s certainly nothing like ABC’s The Modern Family. How did it do in the ratings? Big numbers or immediate cancellation danger?
Raising Hope follows a young pool-cleaner (Lucas Neff) who becomes a father after a one-night stand with a female fugitive. The rest of the cast includes Garrett Dillahunt, Martha Plimpton, Shannon Marie Woodward, Skyler Stone, Bijou Phillips, and Cloris Leachman.
The sitcom debuted on Tuesday night at 9pm to an average 3.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.3 million total viewers. It was in third place in both categories. That’s pretty good, especially considering the competition in that timeslot.
However, it’s not so positive when you consider how much of its lead-in audience that Raising Hope lost. At the end of the season premiere episode of Glee, FOX had a 6.0 rating in the demo and 13.5 million viewers. Raising Hope lost nearly half of that audience.

What’s more, the sitcom lost 10% of its viewers halfway through the show. Those people probably won’t be back to watch future installments. It also doesn’t help that the sitcom that followed it, Running Wilde, is doing much worse.
While the numbers for Raising Hope might be good enough on their own, FOX is surely not pleased that it lost so many lead-in viewers.
The show’s future will ultimately be determined by how well it performs in the coming weeks. Right now, things don’t look good.
What do you think? Did you watch Raising Hope? Is it enjoyable? Will you watch or should it be cancelled already?

I hope it stays. I am bored with the other shows about families.
I thought is was priceless, best show I’ve seen in ages. (But I do agree with Annie about the barfing-on-the-baby scene. What the **** was that about? Most of the rest of the show was too smart for juvenile gross-out humor. So why go there at all?)
Of course it’ll be cancelled. The last show I felt this enthusiastic about was Pushing Daisies.
Totally hilarious! I hope future episodes can keep the comedy going!
I liked it ALOT.
“HOPE” it lasts at least 1 full season
That was hilarious! I laughed out loud from beginning to end. Princess Beyonce, the puking on the baby, Cloris Leechman, everything. I hope it lasts.
LOVED IT!!!! i don’t normally watch comedies but i will watch this!
LOVED IT! LAUGHED OUT LOUD….PLEASE GIVE IT A CHANCE!
I don’t think I would ever tune in again. The lead actor was pretty bad.
raising hope HILARIOUS…it was like a spin back to the 70’s but in 2010.
reminded me of exactly what my parents dealt with n leechman was the best!!!
I thought it was HILARIOUS! I hope it stays around.
Loved it
Great show! VERY FUNNY! I loved it!
Very very funny – best new comedy in some time!
Raising Hope was definitly the better of the two comedies that premiered on Fox on Tuesday night. It brought both the heart and funny. BTW Lucas Neff plays the pool cleaner. Garrett Dillahunt plays his father.
@Mendie: Thanks. Knew that but switched the names anyway.
One of the funniest shows to come along — we laughed all the way through. Extremely talented stars…it’s deceptively difficult to play uneducated, backwoods dimwits. Actually, I enjoyed this more than the season premieres of The Middle and the over-hyped Modern Family, which is good, but wearing thin.
One criticism: I could have done without the throwing-up scene (tv show makers: we REALLY don’t need to see that kind of thing…we don’t like it when it happens to us, why would we want to see it happen to other people???) At any rate, keep it on the air!!
