Shadowhunters premiered last week on Freeform, formerly known as ABC Family, and the executive producer of the series has big plans for the future of the series, which brings the world of The Mortal Instruments to the small screen.
Ed Decter spoke with TV Guide about the new series, and he hopes to see it on the air for quite some time. During the interview with TV Guide, he spoke about the decision to bring the book series to television now after the big screen foray flopped.
He said:
“It really lends itself to television. It’s really a no-brainer. Even the producers of the film will tell you that if they had to do it over again they would have gone right to television because the world is so big and there’s so many moving pieces. It’s so great to have all that for a television show when you want to have so many hours of it. Hopefully, we have 200 hours of it.”
Decter also teased some about the second season of the series to TV Guide.
“We really get details from the other things that Cassandra [Clare] has written. The whole arc of the first two seasons will basically be the first three books. In generalities, that’s what you can expect. Book 2 happens in a week so it wouldn’t be enough necessarily to fill a whole season.”

I thought Jamie & Lily were exactly as I saw Jace & Clary in my head. But I hated the first episode of the series. I thought the acting was weak, the cast lacked the chemistry it needed, and I hated the unnecessary changes made to important aspects of the canon (for example —… Read more »
Watched 1st show. Really enjoyed the books. Seeing they have a plan to get thru the first 3 books so quickly I hope they don’t leave out too much of the good stuff. The movie was just disappointing. Would like this not to be. Only concern is like I said rushing through it too fast and loosing alot.
Anyone know if this will ever air in Canada?
It’s on Canadian Netflix the day after each episode airs in the US. It may come to television after the first season ends in the US.
