Tim Allen has starred in two successful network sitcoms (Home Improvement, Last Man Standing), and Kat Dennings has starred in one (2 Broke Girls). Now, they’ve been brought together on a new comedy for ABC. Will this one also be a hit? Will Shifting Gears be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.
A multi-camera comedy series, the Shifting Gears TV show was created by Julie Thacker Scully & Mike Scully. It stars Allen, Dennings, Seann William Scott, Daryl Chill Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis. Jenna Elfman recurs. In the story, Matt (Allen) is the stubborn and widowed garage owner specializing in fixing vintage and custom cars. Helping him are wisecracking and wheelchair-bound Stich (Mitchell) and handsome but not too bright Gabriel (Scott). Matt’s world is turned upside down when his estranged wild-child daughter returns, driving the Pontiac PTO she “borrowed” from him 15 years earlier. Riley (Dennings) was supposed to go to law school but got pregnant out of high school and she and her musician boyfriend departed for Las Vegas. Now, Riley’s getting a divorce, has two kids, and needs a place to live. Her son is a moody teen, Carter (Simkins), and her daughter is sweet Georgia (Margolis), a fan of Shark Tank’s Lori Greiner, who dreams of becoming very wealthy someday. Before her death, Riley’s mom helped Matt and his daughter communicate. Since her passing, they haven’t talked; now, father and daughter must learn to get along on their own.
Nielsen Ratings
The Nielsen ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances of survival. This chart is updated as new ratings data becomes available.
3/20 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: These are the final national ratings, including all live+same day viewing and DVR playback (through 3:00 AM). While these numbers don’t include further delayed or streaming viewing, they are a very good indicator of how a show is performing, especially when compared to others on the same channel. There can be other economic factors involved in a show’s fate, but typically the higher-rated series are renewed and the lower-rated ones are cancelled.

What do you think? Do you like the Shifting Gears TV series on ABC? Are you glad it has been renewed for a second season?
Any show Tim Allen creates is AWESOME good comic and ACTOR
Tim Allen is great in all situation comedies! Each episode gets better as it goes!
I like this so far. It’s a little bit of Last Man Standing, but he’s a widower instead of a husband, and he has a body shop. A little chilled out. The cast is really good, but the laugh track is annoying. It was better in the second episode though. I’m definitely going to be watching more of it.
IMO, the second episode was funnier than the first. Glad to see Tim back in his element. I’m even starting to like Kat!
Not good I like her, but I don’t like Tim Allen he is not funny ..
We love “Shifting Gears”. I already feel like I know the characters and it has great actors in the show. The show is funny and so warm, we are looking forward to watching it hopefully for a long time.
For a first show of excellent. It did run just a little slow because you had to introduce all the characters and the situation. I mean, it is a situation comedy. There was an a lot of low brow, laugh it up jokes, but I wouldn’t think it would be with Tim Allen. Tim has great comedic timing and so does Dimming as well as the supporting adult cast. As usual Tim Allen had a lot of sarcasm and comedy in this show. Which I love. The good premise for the show with an estranged daughter, moving back home with… Read more »
I hate the canned laughter so I will not continue primarily because of that. The secondary reason is it was just a bore. I had higher hopes.
The laughs after every other sentence is annoying. It distracts from watching the show. The story line isn’t bad. It could be a good sitcom. I am hoping it will succeed. When their lines are not funny, there is still laughter. That reminds me of Two Broke Girls laugh machine. Just too much. I shall see.
It’s great to see Tim back again. I guess now that Trump is back, a conservative TV character is allowed?
I loved Shiftig gears, Tim Allen is a great actor.
Not a fan, acting was stiff with no comfortable interaction between actors. Turned it off after 10 minutes.
I like it.
Not funny
Boring and slow. Kat Dennings voice is irritating and she mumbles . Was looking forward to comedy but this is not it
