CBS has become known as the network for procedural TV shows. There’s no shortage of cops, lawyers, detectives, government agents, and doctors on the schedule — and they typically attract an older audience. So, it turned a few heads when the network picked up a show about a young female superhero — Supergirl. How’s the show doing? Will it be cancelled or survive to see a second season?
Supergirl revolves around Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist). As a girl, she survived Krypton’s destruction by being sent to Earth where she was raised as a human. She kept her powers a secret and now, as an adult, works as an assistant at a big city media conglomerate. Kara’s existence becomes known to the world and she is enlisted by a super-secret agency to help protect the citizens from evil forces as Supergirl. The rest of the cast includes Calista Flockhart, Chyler Leigh, Mehcad Brooks, David Harewood, and Jeremy Jordan.
The series started out strong on October 26th and attracted a 3.15 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 12.96 million viewers. It no doubt benefitted greatly from having The Big Bang Theory as a lead-in.
The following week, Supergirl’s ratings dropped more than 30% — falling to a 2.19 in the demo with 8.87 million. In week three, the numbers fell again. Though the ratings have seen some minor bumps upward, they’ve been slipping lower overall. The eighth and final installment of 2015 hit a new series low with a 1.52 in the demo and 7.28 million.
While the recent ratings aren’t terrible, it’s very concerning that Supergirl’s numbers keep dropping. Will they fall low enough to see the series cancelled? That’s hard to tell right now but the current downward trend doesn’t bode well.
If the show does end up being cancelled by CBS, there’s a chance that Supergirl could move to The CW for season two. After all, the show is produced by Warner Bros. Television (Warner Bros. co-owns The CW) and the series’ creator is Greg Berlanti — the man who created three other DC Comics shows for The CW — Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
Some would say that Supergirl should have ended up on The CW from the start. Perhaps a second season on the smaller network has been a back-up plan from the very start. It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Supergirl series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Should it move to The CW? Would you watch it there?
Renew it for another season!!! I love it, and too many good shows are being cancelled because of slightly lower ratings, which is ridiculous. This show has so much potential and I love the main actors!!
I Agree, they should keep Supergirl on.The last time I watched a CBS program was when the lively Lisa Hartman Black was in the Aaron Spelling series 2000 Malibu Road also starring Jennifer Besos and Drew Barrymore.
Now question how do they measure Supergirls ratings?? The 8 million Viewers is that including DVR on Demand or just the people who tuned in at 8p.m.?? Because two guys I know watch Superrgirl through dvd or on demand
KEEP IT!!!!
Cancel it! It’s awful. Plus, I don’t think Supergirl should be played by an actress who was foolish and sleazy enough to take video and photos of herself having sex with her boyfriend. Even if she did get hacked, that footage is out there now and it’s damaging for little girls who can easily stumble upon that information just by looking her up on wiki. She’s not a good actress or role model. Cancel it.
Second most watched scripted show on Mondays for 5 weeks in a row and fourth most popular show on CBS overall. I kind of doubt CBS is going to cancel it. And Melissa Benoist is an excellent actress and a very good role model for little girls. Most married people do have sex, even mothers of little girls.
Melissa Benoist was NOT married to the guy in the sex photos. That was her boyfriend at the time, not her current husband. Two different guys.
RENEW IT! RENEW IT! This how is a breath of fresh air for this network. The comedies are getting stale! Even the Big Bang Theory new episodes are not funny! Supergirl is a welcome change of pace and Very entertaining!
I have refused to watch “Supergirl” out of respect for CBS’s comedy division. “Supergirl” took away the last remaining Monday comedy hour on CBS, and comedies on CBS are being limited to only two hours — on Thursdays. “Supergirl” should be held responsible for destroying CBS’s comedy lineup. And I also hold it responsible for getting “Mike & Molly” cancelled.
On the other hand, I think “Supergirl”‘s ratings and viewership are average, so I don’t know if it should be cancelled or renewed. “Supergirl” is probably expensive to produce, also.
This week saw a 20% rise in the ratings to 1.8/8.8 million viewers compared to the last episode. If it can maintain a 1.8 or better there is a good chance for renewal.
Melissa Benoist is TOTALLY HOT!!!!!! keep it world needs a super hero beyond our daily lives of bull **** drama !!!
Cancel it.
I hope Supergirl keeps going….great stories and special effects. Besides,
Melissa Benoist is TOTALLY HOT!!!!!!
Damn, the Supergirl show is receiving that same mix of pro and con reviews that movie goers gave the movie Man Of Steel which I enjoyed. I dont know why today’s audiences don’t appreciate superman based shows and movies like they used to. They don’t appreciate the inherent goodness of spirit and optimistic nature of a Superman or Supergirl anymore. They are considered dull and boring by many. Yet a dark and brooding character like Batman or a darker antihero like Jessica Jones are hailed today. How cynical as people have we become? It should be very cool to like… Read more »
It was simply moronic for them to face off with another DC comics property: The Flash which is a very popular show. You can easily presume that half of the potential Supergirl audience is tuning into The Flash instead.
Dude, what are you talking about? Supergirl and The Flash air on different nights. Even if they aired on same night there are new devices called DVRs that enable you to record one and watch later. Also, note that both shows are from same producers. And both shows have the same tone. So if you like Flash then you should like Supergirl. It is really a good show if you give it a chance.
Please keep Supergirl. First they want to get rid of Lost Girl and now Supergirl. Someone have something against tough women???
Tough women called “girl”, really?
BEST COMIC BOOK TV SHOW CURRENTLY ON.
THE FORCE IS VERY STRONG WITH IT.
KEEP IT ON FOR MANY YEARS.
supergirl might just be one of the most boring shows ever created. and melissa benoist is one of the most irritating leads of a tv show since…well, ever. and it’s obvious what the tv audience thinks: the ratings for this show are deservedly cratering. just put this show out of its misery, cbs. making this show was a bad idea to start, and that’s being proven every single week its on the air.
Supergirl is very enjoyable. It started off big after Big Bang Theory, but what wouldn’t. It has a few million more viewers than any of the other superhero shows and it consistently goes up quite a bit in the becoming-more-important Live + 7 ratings which take into account delayed DVR viewing. It has higher ratings above the shows which aired in its time period last year on CBS. I’m sure the network is happy with an influx of younger viewers and the show has been doing nicely in older viewers. It will probably be renewed.
