My Name Is Earl: TBS Not Buying Jason Lee Sitcom, Staying Cancelled

My Name Is EarlNews recently surfaced that, in light of NBC’s cancellation of My Name Is Earl, TBS was interested in picking up the show for 13 new episodes. The cable channel currently airs the first three seasons and is scheduled to add season four in the Fall.

Unfortunately, all sides weren’t able to come to an agreement so there won’t be a fifth season of the sitcom. The Hollywood Reporter reports that series creator Greg Garcia and producing studio 20th Century Fox TV decided not pursue the deal after looking at the necessary budget cuts. Meanwhile, the LA Times believes that TBS felt they wouldn’t be able to afford the show and cut the discussions short. Either way, the end result’s the same.

Yesterday, actor Ethan Suplee (Randy on Earl) indicated that the deal was still possible. On Twitter, he wrote, “I heard TBS MIGHT stand for TheBestStation.” Earlier today, he changed his tune and wrote, “TBS isn’t TheBestStation for reviving Earl. Good news is I’m now available to play Shia Laboof’s better looking brother in Transformers 3.”

A little while ago, 20th Century Fox TV issued a statement that said, “Greg Garcia’s brilliant My Name Is Earl kept America laughing for the past four seasons and certainly deserved to continue for many more.”

“While we had hoped to find a way to produce additional episodes for TBS, in the final analysis we simply could not make the economics work without seriously undermining the artistic integrity of the series. As none of us, Greg included, want the show to go out on anything but a high note, we regret that we must put to rest any speculation that Earl will continue.”

“We are grateful to everyone at TBS for their enthusiasm for the series and wish to offer our heartfelt thanks to the cast and crew of My Name Is Earl for their incredible work.”

So, the sitcom is apparently over. Unfortunately, the viewers have been left hanging. If you had your choice, how would you like to see the Earl story concluded?

I am very disappointed! This show is the funniest show I have seen. I love Joy! There is no reason for this show to continue! Once we finally get a good show they take away from us. I am very dissappointed, it wasn’t even left off as “To Be Continued”….It was just a normal show. You can’t leave it like that!

It was left off as “To Be Continued” actually. But still, pretty retarded.

This sucks they should have at least ended it. Why would you leave off with a cliff hanger is you can’t pay for the next episode!!! Even if they can’t pay for another season they should make a movie to finish the show! Who is earl jr.s dad? Did earl finidh the list? Ehat happens after that? Why didn’t they end it!?!?!

i agree with all of you how could they leave it at that it is just so disappointing i mean how could they not have at least one more episode we will never know earl jrs real father grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr there weren’t really alot of black people so it narrows it down but WHO WAS IT?!?!?!?!?!?! i watched it on netflix and i have slight OCD and i freaked out because i hate cliffhangers i always have to have things perfect or else it bugs me and i also have ADHD which obviously made it worse. WHY OH WHY?!!?!!?!!?!!?

i think that there are enough followers and certainly a good enough story to make this into a movie without people being too lost. you could start with a little back story(with emphasis on characters featured in 4-26), earl finishing his list and then put on 4-26 and what should have been the last episode. or maybe that and then earl finishes his list with a list item that he will never make up for but will always try to, which would be to be the best dad that he could for dodge.

plus the movie would make more money than another season anyways or at the very least make enough to cover another season if you decide to end with another cliff hanger. and in doing so you’d get even more followers/publicity and money.

Earl is truly.a unique gem in the unmitigated wasteland. Of episodic. Crap perfect. On all levels. And one side note Jason Lee rocks a mustache. Like. Nobodys businessg

That was no way to end season 4… If ya had to end it, ya could have left the last one off. That Sucked!!! This was the best comedy on TV and now it’s gone with a cliffhanger. LAME!!! BTW, who and the hell makes the decision to end a season on a cliffhanger without having the next season paid for and contracted to happen! Season 5 should have already been in the works, something, friggin’ anything! How about a release of the second part of that last episode, just to gain closure? Think about it…

Thank you Netflix for making all seasons available!

I don’t care who buys it it is BS THAT YOU PUT TO BE continued ON THE LAST SHOW OF THE 4 SEASON YOU ALL NEED TO AT LEAST SUCK IT UP AND JUST MAKE ONE MORE SO EVEY ONE THAT LOVES UR SHOW WILL GET TO HAVE SOME KIND OF A ENDING

Your acting like this is the first time something like this has ever happened. ALF was a great sitcom from the 80′s and ended on a huge cliff hanger. It took better than 10 years to give it a solid ending called Project Alf.

@Josh: Now, I don’t know if I’d call Project ALF a solid ending… lol

This was a great show. It generates comedy for teenagers and adults. I love coming home and putting on some reruns. I wish the show could continue but I’m grateful that the episodes already aired make me laugh as hard as I will at any sitcom. Thank you Netflix! :)

I found this show on Netflix a few weeks ago, and went through the entire series in rather short order. When I realized that the fourth season’s last show — a completely unexpected cliffhanger — was the final show, I went online looking for some hint of some kind of follow-up — even spoilers from the creator or writers, who surely must have had some idea of how season 5, episode 1 was going to go, would have been better than nothing at all. At worst, I’d have taken a decent fanfiction ending (all I found was crappy fanfic.) No resolution of any kind. I’m disgusted — that’s no way to end a really outstanding and unique sitcom. I’m half tempted to track down the creator and pull a Kathy Bates from Misery on him. Not really… but come on, it’s been a year and a half, obviously we’re not getting this show back — couldn’t we get some general idea of how it would have gone?

I am sure that TBS has paid for things that aren’t nearly as good as ” My Name Is Earl “.

Maybe they bought a the right to a movie or show.. whatever it is ” Everybody Loves Raymond ” reruns won’t pay the bills.

Get with it TBS before FOX buys the rights and rubs it in like what happened with them and
” Star Wars ” AND ” Family Guy “….
