As Tom Kane continues to try to keep a grip on his city and life, the Boss TV series struggles to attract an audience. Will Boss be cancelled or renewed for a third season of Starz? That’s an even bigger challenge thank Kane’s.
Airing on Friday nights, Boss revolves around the Mayor of Chicago (Kelsey Grammer) who’s recently been diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disorder. Determined to remain in charge, he conceals the disease from everyone around him except his physician. The Starz TV show also features the talents of Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson, Troy Garity, Rotimi, Jonathan Groff, and Sanaa Lathan.
It’s no secret that the TV series struggled in its first season. Despite sporting some top talent, the viewers and ratings just weren’t there. Luckily for the cast and crew, the show was renewed for a second season weeks before the show even premiered. Had the cable channel waited to see how well Boss would perform before making a decision, it’s hard to believe we’d be seeing a second season now.
Last month, at The Television Critics Association press tour, Boss showrunner Farhad Safinia said, “I am completely aware of what the numbers are, and I’m heartbroken… It’s one of those things where you’d like more people to see what you’re doing… I do hope the audience comes to see it so we can tell the entire story. I think we just have to work on that assumption that we will get to do it.”

The ratings were so low for the first season of Boss that they’re often very difficult to locate. We do know that Boss premiered last October to 659,000 viewers and by the middle of the run had fallen to 250,000.
Season two certainly hasn’t been bringing any better ratings. The August 24th installment drew just 229,000 viewers and the season has averaged only 310,000. Earlier this year, the second season of Spartacus averaged 1.35 million on Friday nights in the same timelot.
It seems highly unlikely that Starz will be bringing back Boss for a third season. These numbers are just incredibly small for an expensive scripted drama.
On the positive side, Safinia has indicated that they plot each season like a movie so that each has a beginning, middle, and end. While it’s very likely that Boss will be cancelled, at least the show’s loyal viewers will be given at least some kind of resolution by the end of the season. Season two wraps on October 19th.
What do you think? Do you like the Boss TV series? Why do you think it hasn’t caught on with a bigger audience? Should it be renewed for a third season or cancelled?
I like the series, but the there’s too much irrelevant sex that adds nothing to the plot. It’s like now that it’ allowed to show sex on TV, they just throw it in because they can—–boring!!
……I will mourn the loss of this show forever…..such a travesty!
PUT BOSS BACK ON YOU TAKE THE GOOD SHOWES OFF AND PUT ON TRASH
Boss should be on HBO ASAP!!!!
Just think about the possibilities. Boardwalk Empire and Boss on the same night back to back. on HBO. The STRAZ cable channel may not be around in a couple of years if they continue going this route.
To the executives at HBO, PLEASE buy the rights to the Boss television series! I recently sent HBO a request to do this. I hope they do.
I am so disappointed to find out that Boss will not return for a third season. I just finished watching the last episode of season two (again for the second time) and decided to google when the third season was to begin. I can not believe “Boss” is not returning. I watched the first season in two nights and became addicted to the show. I do not understand why such a great political thriller did not have such high ratings. I believe that if the show was aired on a different channel it would have done much better. Anyone, I… Read more »
I totally agree. Put it on again. It was not promoted well. I only found about it by accident. I was looking for Kelsey Grammar show’s, etc and came across Boss. My husband and I are hooked. It has the potential to be another “Soprano” series success if the right networks play it right…just saying…
I was told about Boss after the first season so I had to go to on demand and watch. I watched the entire first season in a weekend and was hooked and couldn’t wait for the second season to start. They should definately bring it back and advertise. Everyone that I told about it started watching and loved it. Kelsey is sooooo unbelievably ruthless that it leaves me shaking my head everytime. And that wife is the Ice Queen personified! What a pair!!! Please don’t cancel the show
I totally agree!!! Please!!! Somebody, bring it back. Why oh why wasn’t it properly publicized?
I heard abut it through a friend long after it got cancelled. My husband and I watched it totally in several sittings.
This is just so ******* sad, pardon my language but it just is!. I would bet a whole lot of money that the low ratings have a lot to do with the fact that it was aired on Starz and not HBO or Showtime. With all due respect to that particular tv channel fans, the typical Starz viewer isn´t exactly looking for something like Boss. If aired on HBO my guess is that soon enough the ratings would have reached the same as The Sopranos did. Too bad the idea was sold to the wrong people. Let´s face it, it´s… Read more »
I think there should have been more advertising the show was great I would really like to see a 3rd season.
It was up there with the soprano’s, the wire etc. Bring it back to see what happens. Word of mouth is everything. I told several people to watch and they loved it.
I think the series was great. Kelsey Grammer was absolutly fantastic as an actor and portray the politics of Chicago to a tee. I believe the reason the series did not take off was because people outside of the Chi town area just don’t understand how things get done there. You have to live there and understand that Chicago always gets the job done no matter what. I think it should renewed and expanded. Chicago is a great city and should be rewarded with another season with more of the Boss series.
i also think that given the chance, the numbers would have been increasing exponencially each season, it´s just one of those things that take a little more time..
I think it was one of the best tv shows i´ve seen. really gonna miss it. It changes people´s perception of politics and politicians in a way that its necesary for the world to move to a different administration system
our opinion its up there with dexter and homeland…………………………
I would love to see a third series of Boss with Kelsey Grammar we need to see what happens
I am so disappointed that Starz will not pick up Boss for a third season. This is the best series I have seen in a long time. How can the network leave the fans hanging. We need to see the conclusion. Boss should be renewed!!!!
