As Tom Kane continues to try to keep a grip on his city and life, the Boss TV series struggles to attract an audience. Will Boss be cancelled or renewed for a third season of Starz? That’s an even bigger challenge thank Kane’s.
Airing on Friday nights, Boss revolves around the Mayor of Chicago (Kelsey Grammer) who’s recently been diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disorder. Determined to remain in charge, he conceals the disease from everyone around him except his physician. The Starz TV show also features the talents of Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson, Troy Garity, Rotimi, Jonathan Groff, and Sanaa Lathan.
It’s no secret that the TV series struggled in its first season. Despite sporting some top talent, the viewers and ratings just weren’t there. Luckily for the cast and crew, the show was renewed for a second season weeks before the show even premiered. Had the cable channel waited to see how well Boss would perform before making a decision, it’s hard to believe we’d be seeing a second season now.
Last month, at The Television Critics Association press tour, Boss showrunner Farhad Safinia said, “I am completely aware of what the numbers are, and I’m heartbroken… It’s one of those things where you’d like more people to see what you’re doing… I do hope the audience comes to see it so we can tell the entire story. I think we just have to work on that assumption that we will get to do it.”

The ratings were so low for the first season of Boss that they’re often very difficult to locate. We do know that Boss premiered last October to 659,000 viewers and by the middle of the run had fallen to 250,000.
Season two certainly hasn’t been bringing any better ratings. The August 24th installment drew just 229,000 viewers and the season has averaged only 310,000. Earlier this year, the second season of Spartacus averaged 1.35 million on Friday nights in the same timelot.
It seems highly unlikely that Starz will be bringing back Boss for a third season. These numbers are just incredibly small for an expensive scripted drama.
On the positive side, Safinia has indicated that they plot each season like a movie so that each has a beginning, middle, and end. While it’s very likely that Boss will be cancelled, at least the show’s loyal viewers will be given at least some kind of resolution by the end of the season. Season two wraps on October 19th.
What do you think? Do you like the Boss TV series? Why do you think it hasn’t caught on with a bigger audience? Should it be renewed for a third season or cancelled?
Amazing show fabulous acting.
if it were on a different network maybe you’d get a better viewing audience, like HBO. when I tell people about the show. they say when is it on I never heard of it
Please have it for another couple of seasons give it a chance for recognition.
please have series 3.
the best exciting show on television
Absolutely the best show television. Superb acting especially by Kelsey Grammer.
there’s too much sex in it .What happened to leaving some private moments to the imagination of the viewers
I loved this show from the start…….I would hate to see it end. Please don’t cancel it!!
This IS The best show on TV. I do not even like Kelsey Grammer YET his perfromance and the story telling of this show are excellent!
PLease bring it back for third season there is still so much I Want to know!
This is just SO exciting – how can US viewers not have picked up on it big time…lack of promotion over there? As an aussie I’m guessing it might be more popular with UK/Aus viewers (we love our political stories)- perhaps a funding arrangement could be reached with Sky and Foxtel subscription channels??? Or even the BBC and ABC broadcasters (we’re allowed the “F” word etc on our public broadcasters).
Absolutely love the show Boss. I just started watching it on FIOS OnDemand. I enjoyed it so much, I watched two seasons in three days. Please don’t cancel it. It has to be something Starz is doing wrong. I didnt known anything about the show until I heard someone talking about it on the radio. Boss needs better advertising or a different network. It is definitely the best adult drama out there. Hats off to Kelsey Grammar.
I think should return for a 3rd and 4th season, but not on Showtime or any of those supposedly premium channels, which are crap! choose a different network to show Boss I’ll definetely watch!
Where are the viewers???…Boss is the best show on television today! I haven’t been excited about a series like this since the Sopranos….brilliantly written…superb acting…it has to survive!
Never miss an episode, Boss is a great series with excellent writers and outstanding cast. Would certainly like to see a different time slot if that would help save the show.
Outstanding cast and story! It deserves at least one more season to gain viewership. The show parallels The Sopranos and The Wire in terms of substance and depth. Please find a network who will support this brilliant series.
Boss is the most appealing drama currently on TV. Kelsey Grammar is absolutely fantastic. The rest of the cast is also amazing. Great to see Daniel J Travanti again. The writing is magnificent. Starz, please look for a better night if you are considering cancelling the show.
Too bad American audiences are so painfully stupid.
This is the best show on TV. If the ratings aren’t high it’s because of the night it airs or the lack of advertising Starz does on its behalf. PLEASE renew it for a 3rd season. Acting is second only to the excellent story line.
Before they cancel it, maybe they could experiment with the time slots or the dates it airs. I wish they could sell the rights for this show to HBO, Showtime, or Cinemax. I think one reason that the ratings are what they are is because just not that many people know about Starz. I really feel like if this show were to air on one of those networks, it would be right up there with The Sopranos. In any case, I hope to see it back again, if not on Starz, then on some network where it can reach a… Read more »
Great show…hope they renew for Season 3
HBO, Showtime, or Cinemax and Starz are crappy channels nobody really watches them because the are expensive in to have in your tv programming, and the show too many old move month after month. You could rent some of those movies at the library, so no one really pays for those channels
