The CW handed out some early renewals today and there really weren’t any surprises, especially if you look at the struggling network’s overall numbers. Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, 90210, Gossip Girl, and America’s Next Top Model will all be back next season. What about Life Unexpected, Melrose Place, One Tree Hill, and Smallville?
First, to the renewals…
90210 is set to come back for season three. The show is down in the ratings and is one of the network’s weaker performers. However, the network has plenty of holes to fill in its schedule and apparently isn’t ready to give up on the show just yet. The network is dropping Jennie Garth and Rob Estes in an attempt to focus even more heavily on the younger characters next season.
America’s Next Top Model will be back for two more cycles, numbers 15 and 16. The reality show has been in a decline for years but apparently the benefit still outweighs the costs on the venerable reality competition.

Gossip Girl will be coming back for season three as well. The show is first among the CW’s target demographic of women 18-34, making it a lock for renewal.
Supernatural will be back for a sixth season. The show is having a great year and has improved last season’s performance in women 18-34 by 29%. Series creator Eric Kripke said that he planned to finish the show after five seasons. He’ll supposedly still be heavily involved but won’t be the day-to-day showrunner. Stars Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles are reportedly signed for only one more season and have hinted that they want out.
The Vampire Diaries will be returning for its second season. Despite airing on the most competitive night of television, Thursdays, the freshman show is the network’s highest rated show overall and in the 18-34 demographic.
What about the CW’s other shows? Are they cancelled? They aren’t all goners but at least one, likely two, won’t be back.
Melrose Place is the network’s biggest disappointment of the season and it looks nearly impossible that it’ll be back for a sophomore year. A dozen of the 18 ordered episodes have aired so far. The remaining six will begin airing on March 9th after a three month hiatus of originals.
One Tree Hill has been around for seven seasons and hasn’t been having a very successful season. The series could come back or it could end. Its fate will likely will come down to costs or the faith that the network has in other options.
Conversely, Life Unexpected is the new kid on the block. It got off to a decent start but has been losing steam week after week. The execs are likely waiting awhile longer to see what happens. Four of 13 episodes have aired so far.
Smallville is performing well, especially considering the show is in its ninth season and is airing on Friday nights. It’s a lock for renewal and could only end if Tom Welling doesn’t want to continue.
What do you think? Are you happy that the shows have been renewed? Would you trade any of them for the four on the bubble?
PLEASE DON”T CANCEL SMALLVILLE!!!!! I just started watching it this past summer and I love it!!! It would be a shame to cancel it when it has been doing pretty darn well since it’s on STUPID FRIDAYSS!!!!! Thanks a lot CW, you did this to the fans, you ruined our chance of having smallville locked in for a 10th and final season. Smallville needs to get to season 10! It is not ready to end, Lois and Clark have just gotten together he has finally stopped with the whole stupid lana drama so please don’t kill this show! Also give… Read more »
Definatly DO NOT cancel Life unexpected…It is a great show…but i bet the ratings for monday stink because it is up against two many other shows like 24 and two and half men, bachlor…. i always have to watch the repeat on wednesday!!! so keep it..advertise for it….and put it on a night with less compition !!! i love this show…
PLEASE Do not cancel LIFE UNEXPECTED. There are other show’s on your network that are not nearly as good…loose them!
well im srry about all of ur shows cuz i only need 1 show on the CW and thts supernatural so im srry for u guys secretly im not very fond of smallvill im not going 2 lie but even i can c potential in it and would cancel 90210 GG r Vampire Diaries for it.
Don’t cancel GG or the new show Life Unexpected…..Love them both!!!
why would they even consider giving Smallville the dreaded axe? If anything should be cancelled, it should be Gossip Girl. It’s boring
I would get rid of Gossip Girl to keep Life Unexpected next season. This show has heart. I do like One Tree Hill however the Brooke/Julian thing is getting old. (dysfunction) How can Brooke be so accomplished yet not get help to get over her hangs ups with Julian. Bring them together or maybe write Brooke off the show. Getting back to Life Unexpected please reconsider cancelling this show. (PLEASE)
Thanking you in advance.
I love Life Unexpected. CW finally found a show as good as Gilmore Girls were. Great acting and writing I would cancel 90210 for bad acting alone.
i m sorry but how can Gossip Girl be a lock 4 renewal on one tree hill not when one tree hill gets better ratings
@Anonymous: Gossip Girl does a tiny bit better in the 18-49 demo. I don’t know the 18-34 demo numbers but the network says Gossip Girl is its best performer and the CW loves that demo. It’s also important to remember that the studio wants to get enough episodes of GG for syndication.
OTH has been around longer, has enough eps for syndication, and is presumably more expensive to produce.
They just gave One Tree Hill the axe.
@Rin: Not true.
I hope they will renew LUX. It
ONE TREE HILL is the only show that I watch from the CW, it’s the only one worth watching! It has been an AMAZING season, even though Lucas and Peyton left. I understand that all GREAT things must come to an end. But it’s not OTH’S time. And WE, the fans and everyone who has ever worked on the show, DESERVE MORE! We deserve the most amazing series finale ever and we won’t be able to get it if the CW cancels it now, in a time when there are MANY story lines to conclude, that deserve a great conclusion.… Read more »
I’m pretty sure that Gossip Girl is going into it’s fourth season. I’m a big fan of One Tree Hill, but it has been going downhill since Lucas and Peyton left, so I say to give it a proper send off in May.
@CasayanReality: Thanks for the catch.
(Supernatural) Kripike will be around as usual and the stars have changed their tune since then. [Because they all were interviewed right after the loss of Kim Manners people seem to think that they arent THRILLED about sticking around! Surely if a close friend as well as a director dies, anyone would feel like giving up.] This show is passionately run and it just hit its 100th episode as proof. Please dont act as if the cast and crew are groaning over a renewel. We fans sure as hell arent.
I really hope Life Unexpected sticks around. I love that show and think there are some good storylines to develop.
I agree. Please don’t give up on it yet CW. Give it a chance.
