Kiefer Sutherland enjoyed a long run on the 24 series on FOX and his new Designated Survivor TV show was one of the most-anticipated of the 2016-17 season. How has this ABC series been doing in the ratings? Is Designated Survivor worth watching? Cancel or keep it?
A political thriller, Designated Survivor follows Tom Kirkman (Sutherland), a lower-level Cabinet member, who ends up becoming the President of the United States. He struggles to keep the country and his own family from falling apart — while navigating the highly-volatile political arena and leading the search to find who is responsible for a horrific attack. The rest of the cast includes Natascha McElhone, Adan Canto, Italia Ricci, LaMonica Garrett, Tanner Buchanan, Kal Penn, and Maggie Q.
The series debuted on September 21st with a 2.24 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.04 million viewers. That was a very positive start in the ratings.
In week two, the numbers fell more than 20%, to a 1.79 in the demo and 7.97 million. In week three, they fell more than 10% to a 1.61 demo and 7.05 million. Episode four held steady but episode five’s numbers saw another big fall, dropping to a 1.23 demo rating with 5.96 million. Subsequent episodes have stayed at about the same levels.
While ABC really wants this show to survive, the numbers seem to indicate that the audience is losing interest. The series does get a very healthy boost in delayed viewing but the networks get paid for C+3 ratings. Those numbers include DVR viewing within three days of the original airing — when the commercials are watched. A big part of the reason people use a DVR is to skip commercials so it’s unclear how
Those numbers include DVR viewing within three days of the original airing — when the commercials are watched. After all, a big part of the reason why people use a DVR is to skip commercials so it’s unclear how much delayed viewing is really benefiting the network’s bottom line.
While I’m sure ABC isn’t ready to throw in the towel yet, the network execs were surely hoping for better ratings than this. If the ratings fall lower, Designated Survivor could easily be cancelled.
The series has a dozen more episodes to prove itself but the season won’t resume until March 8th. Will viewers be anxiously waiting for new episodes or, will they have moved on? We’ll have to wait and see.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Designated Survivor TV show on ABC? Is this series worth watching? Cancel or keep it?
Keep it ! I love this show !
My wife and I love this show. It is the best new show of the past season. So many series start out more or less strong, but then drift off. Designated Survivor has actually gotten better. Please bring this show back and keep it on the air!
Love the show !!! With all of the crap on TV, you can at least keep a good one.
ABSOLUTELY KEEP IT!!!! This show is one of the best shows on TV right now!! I’m so sick of the reality shows and the inane comedy shows on. The only problem I have is the time slot as it is up against some other good shows. I usually pick 2 shows to record and watch 1.. So i might be one of those that don’t watch it for 4 or 5 days. BUT I DO WATCH IT!!!!!
Please keep it. Just don’t let it become too liberal.
No. Don’t cancel THIS show. This show has relevance today and is perhaps the best scenario of Presidential leadership. No sleeping around with someone type of crap. ABC already has that type of show. Let this show deal with the topics of today and keep going into our fears as a country. ABC just needs to not rush this presidency” into a “second term.” Just keep the current “tempo” of events and cliffhangers. This is good TV.
It’s very interesting to note that Network execs have no loyalties. Many new shows of the past started off strong, waned over the first few episodes of season one, then made a great come-back. Some lasting up to seven seasons or more. West Wing, Friends, Seinfeld, and ER are some shows that saw this trend. The Execs need to give it more time. Their patience is so thin. Designated Survivor is a great show! It’s terrible that they haven’t even passed the first major story arc and already talking about cancellation. I would also suggest that having such a long… Read more »
Please, please, please keep this show. It’s by far the best show on TV!
I love the show , the thing that made it hard to stay with was the schedule , the debates interrupted the flow and the time 10pm is late wish it was 8 or 9 instead.
But definitely keep don’t cancel
its different than other roles he has done keep it plzzzzzxxzzzzzzzxzz
Please keep this show. It is one of the best.
Keep!
I think people watch TV differently now. And looking at the drops in the ratings they were days that there were other things going on like World Series baseball, election night etc. also streaming TV is creating a different way of viewing TV live.
PLEASE keep it.
Great show! Should be on each week.
