The men and women of the 74th Precinct won’t be back on the beat for the 2023-24 television season. CBS has cancelled any plans for East New York to have a second year.
A police procedural series, the East New York TV show stars Amanda Warren, Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Olivia Luccardi, and Lavel Schley. The story revolves around the officers and detectives of the 74th Precinct in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn. It’s a working-class neighborhood amid social upheaval while the early seeds of gentrification have been planted. Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (Warren) is the newly promoted boss of the precinct who has family ties to the area. She’s determined to deploy creative methods to protect her beloved community with the help of her officers and detectives. Her team includes Chief John Suarez (Smits); training officer Marvin Sandeford (Santiago-Hudson); Detective Tommy Killian (Rankin); Captain Stan Yenko (Kind); Detective Crystal Morales (Rodriguez); trainee Andre Bentley (Schley); and patrol officer Brandy Quinlan (Luccardi). Regina Haywood has a vision. She and the squad of the 74th Precinct will not only serve their community – they’ll also become part of it.
The first season of East New York averages a 0.38 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.01 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). In the live+7 day ratings, the series picks up nearly 40% more viewers.
CBS and the show’s studio, Warner Bros., had been in talks about a renewal for a while, and things were looking positive. However, the network reversed its decision to cancel SWAT today, and it’s believed that the two police shows had been essentially competing for the same spot on the 2023-24 schedule. Since SWAT has a more established track record and was doing slightly better in the ratings, East New York ended up getting cancelled.
The de facto series finale of East New York airs on May 14th. In the “Ruskin Roulette” episode, Haywood’s leadership is questioned after a tragic shooting close to home, and her relationship with Suarez is tested.
True Lies, another freshman drama from an outside studio, was also cancelled today.
What do you think? Have you watched the East New York TV series on CBS? Are you disappointed this police drama wasn’t renewed for a second season? Are you surprised that it’s been cancelled?
Please, please, please reconsider the cancellation of East New York! Such a well written, thoughtful show. It deserves to be kept on schedule.
We Liked & watched East New York. CBS always cancelled the good shows !!
The East New York cancellation is a travesty. I am too upset to joke about cursing the CBS “powers that be”. This is the best police procedural on television. CBS should reconsider its decision.
Please keep the show …
Born in LES and I really enjoyed this show. Not crazy about Amanda Warren but loved all other cast members and loved the show. Sorry to see it go. Reminded me of NY PD BLUE. An updated version
This is such a sad day I read about CVS canceling East New York and as a New Yorker and my husband being from New Jersey we finally found a show that represented the real reality of New York the politics the policing the neighborhoods and most of all just real reality TV. We have these reality shows that really just for entertainment and finally we found a show in East New York that’s represented what is currently happening throughout our nation with gun violence with neighborhoods trying to get back to trusting police and this gave a complete overview… Read more »
Watched ENY loved and was born there back in 1952…disappointed
Ugh! Another favorite show on the chopping block floor! Why!? Cancel SWAT instead.
I was really hoping that they will at least renewed one of them. But in stand they cancelling both of them. So stupid. They played 21 episodes I think but they going to cancelled it so crazy it blows my mind. They should have kept s.w.a.t. cancelled. An renewed East New York or True Lies.
Please don’t cancel East New York. It’s a great show better than any NCIS drab showings.
You’ve lost the plot.
If it was a toss up between East New York and SWAT. I would not pick SWAT.
Place East New York on a Saturday because there’s nothing worth watching on that day.
So disappointed this show is cancelled. Quality acting and storylines. Do not understand why CBS wint give it a chance.
Love this show!!! Can’t believe it’s being cancelled seems like lately I just start watching a new show and it’s cancelled after the first season!!! Pretty soon I’m just gonna give up watching new TV.
Really enjoyed East New York. So surprised it was canceled
Good story line. What’s going on with canceling all the excellent shows.
I liked the show. Very entertaining. It’s a shame that it won’t be on anymore
I am so sorry to here that they are canceling this show. I loved it and the people of the 74. Hope another network pick it up.
