The men and women of the 74th Precinct won’t be back on the beat for the 2023-24 television season. CBS has cancelled any plans for East New York to have a second year.
A police procedural series, the East New York TV show stars Amanda Warren, Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Olivia Luccardi, and Lavel Schley. The story revolves around the officers and detectives of the 74th Precinct in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn. It’s a working-class neighborhood amid social upheaval while the early seeds of gentrification have been planted. Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (Warren) is the newly promoted boss of the precinct who has family ties to the area. She’s determined to deploy creative methods to protect her beloved community with the help of her officers and detectives. Her team includes Chief John Suarez (Smits); training officer Marvin Sandeford (Santiago-Hudson); Detective Tommy Killian (Rankin); Captain Stan Yenko (Kind); Detective Crystal Morales (Rodriguez); trainee Andre Bentley (Schley); and patrol officer Brandy Quinlan (Luccardi). Regina Haywood has a vision. She and the squad of the 74th Precinct will not only serve their community – they’ll also become part of it.
The first season of East New York averages a 0.38 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.01 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). In the live+7 day ratings, the series picks up nearly 40% more viewers.
CBS and the show’s studio, Warner Bros., had been in talks about a renewal for a while, and things were looking positive. However, the network reversed its decision to cancel SWAT today, and it’s believed that the two police shows had been essentially competing for the same spot on the 2023-24 schedule. Since SWAT has a more established track record and was doing slightly better in the ratings, East New York ended up getting cancelled.
The de facto series finale of East New York airs on May 14th. In the “Ruskin Roulette” episode, Haywood’s leadership is questioned after a tragic shooting close to home, and her relationship with Suarez is tested.
True Lies, another freshman drama from an outside studio, was also cancelled today.
What do you think? Have you watched the East New York TV series on CBS? Are you disappointed this police drama wasn’t renewed for a second season? Are you surprised that it’s been cancelled?
I am so disappointed that East New York is cancelled. Really looked forward to it every week. Great acting. Just can’t believe it won’t be back.
I guess I am different than most of the posts. I watched all the shows and was not impressed. Many NOT real police situations and people in command getting involved with every day stuff. If someone else picks it up I hope that pleases many. I will probably not watch.
I enjoyed East New York, for a realist series I am disappointed it was not renewed.
I am very disappointed. I NEVER watch Network TV, except for EAST NEW YORK. I hope another network or streaming service picks it up. SAD
This is completely ******** . Why don’t you cancel shows like Chicago PD and Chicago fire.
They’re both long in the tooth and we’re sick and tired of same old, same old. East New York is a much better show than a lot of others too many to mention. R. Legato ( Canada )
I am extremely disappointed East New York has been cancelled. I looked forward to watching it on Sunday nights. The characters were just coming into their own; the storyline was engaging. Regina Haywood was a strong female character and fun to watch. Especially great how she took on the brass in the May 14th show. Cancellation is truly a bummer!
This was a very good show with very good actors I’m very disappointed that it was cancelled. I hope CBS will have a change of heart or someone else picks it up
East New York 2!!!!!!
It appears nothing worth a damn is given a chance. East New York was something that grew on me, but it is a very good show. RENEW IT! SWAT has been done already!
Bring on East New York season 2! Come on!
This was one of my favorite shows and am just getting to know the characters and enjoy the storylines as they develop. Doesn’t seem CBS gave this show enough time to develop an audience….and it even if they do it doesn’t matter. ….show had a strong audience watching. Hope there is some reconsideration or that another service picks it up and continues good programming. SWAT got saved….yeah! Now CBS or someone else needs to do the same for East New York!
Canceling East New York is a mistake, imo.
loved the show shame cancellation
So sad. This was one of my favourite shows on tv today. Cancel SWAT instead. Dam it
I’m so sorry to see East New York canceled. I hope that CBS gets a lot of feedback and renews this program just like they did with swat. It doesn’t seem that they give the new shows a chance. CBS please reconsider!!
