The Gentleman Jack TV series was introduced in 2019 so, thanks to the pandemic, it’s been three years between seasons. The show is a co-production of HBO and BBC One so it is less expensive for each outlet. Viewership is typically pretty low in the U.S. however so, will HBO want to stay on board? Will Gentleman Jack be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.
A historical drama series, the Gentleman Jack TV show stars Suranne Jones, Sophie Rundle, Timothy West, Jodhi May, Katherine Kelly, Derek Riddell, Gemma Jones, Stephanie Cole, Peter Davison, Amelia Bullmore, Vincent Franklin, Shaun Dooley, Rosie Cavaliero, Joe Armstrong, Anthony Flanagan, and George Costigan. Drawing upon the real Anne Lister’s copious diary entries (part of which were written in code), the story centers on Anne (Suranne Jones), a landowner and industrialist. She sets out to shore up Shibden Hall, her West Yorkshire family estate, by reopening the local Halifax coal mine and marrying well. The twist is, Anne does not intend to marry a man. In season two, it’s 1832 and all eyes are on Anne Lister and Ann Walker (Rundle) as they set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple. Anne’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with Halifax on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: Season one of Gentleman Jack on HBO averaged a 0.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 392,000 viewers in the live+same day ratings.
Note: These are the final national ratings, including all live+same day viewing and DVR playback (through 3:00 AM). Early fast affiliate ratings (estimates) are indicated with an “*”. While these numbers don’t include further delayed or streaming viewing, they are a very good indicator of how a show is performing, especially when compared to others on the same channel. There can be other economic factors involved in a show’s fate, but the higher-rated series are typically renewed and the lower-rated ones are cancelled.
What do you think? Do you like the Gentleman Jack TV series on HBO and BBC One? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
*7/9/22 update: Gentleman Jack has been cancelled so there won’t be a third season on HBO.
Please renew! I will be heartbroken if there is no season 3.
There isn’t a fan out there that doesn’t know that GJ skews to the over-49 audience, and yet the ratings focus on 18-49. What 20 year old wants to watch a drama about a (real!!) woman in Nineteenth Century England? But I assure you, the over 49 audience is large and VERY devoted—the BBC has actually made a documentary focusing on the life-changing impact of this show. Come on, HBO—you can’t spare an hour a week, for 8 weeks, for an audience not made up of millennials???
I just discovered and binge watched Season 1. And am now enjoying, what for me, is an immediate followup with Season 2. This series changed my life, and. and I adamantly request it continue. In terms of low ratings in comparison to other shows, the subject matter would never be one that would draw huge ratings. It has a smaller niche all its own, and the viewers would not be mainstream. That does not in any way reduce its value. And the acting and writing and cinematography and educational input of those historical times, are worthy and compelling enough to… Read more »
The biggest problem with the show is that Anne Lister gets more and more unlikable and frankly I’m sick and tired of seeing Suranne keep playing unlikable characters again and again and again.
Plus this season Lister serves as a backdrop to highlight other characters, her own character development is non-existent.
Surely, Suranne Jones deserves better than this role of an unlikable brat who gets more and more insufferable as the show progresses?
2 seasons are more than enough at this point – if someone wants to be educated on the topic, welcome to the diaries.
Couldn’t wait for second series and it hasn’t disappointed. Can’t believe they might not go ahead with series3. The writing and acting and set is so good.
Please renew! I love this series! Anne Fan!
Hell BBC and HBO! If yo don’t renew this series. I am going to sue you!
Please renew! Such a great show! ♥️
Renew! Beautifully written, epic sets and costumes with one of the best actresses of our time. Suranne’s performance is astounding! Sally’s script is brilliant!!!
The BBC ratings don’t look good either.
Can we just free Suranne Jones from this show(and Vigil for that matter) and finally give her something engaging, adventurous and epic written by a talented professional?
Lots of people downloaded a VPN and streamed on BBC iplayer because they didn’t want to wait for episodes to come out weeks later on HBO
Gentlemen Jack just brilliant Drama yes to a third series ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Renew!!!!
Absolutely renew! Fascinating series. They are based on actual diary entries and the series should continue until the diary entries stop.
You have the wrong actress name for the lead character of Ann Walker. Should be Sophie Rundle. Stephanie Cole does play a character named Ann Walker, but it’s the lead Ann Walker‘s aunt.
Fantastic show it should be renewed!!!
