NBC cancelled Hannibal nearly two weeks ago but the show’s production company, Gaumont International Television, is still trying to find a new home for the series so they can make a fourth season. It seems that pursuit may have just gotten a little harder.
Based on the Red Dragon novel by Thomas Harris, Hannibal revolves around the early relationship between FBI investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a forensic psychiatrist who becomes an infamous cannibalistic serial killer. Others in the cast of this thriller series include Laurence J. Fishburne III, Aaron Abrams, Caroline Dhavernas, Scott Thompson, Tao Okamoto, and Gillian Anderson.
According to Deadline, the contracts for Dancy and Mikkelsen have now expired which means that they are free and clear to accept other projects. If Gaumont is successful in finding a new home for Hannibal, new contracts will have to be worked out with the actors — if they’re still available. Word is that they both still love the show and would like to return if they can.
Fishburne has already been cast as author Alex Haley in the remake of Roots for A&E.
While he’s hopeful that Hannibal can continue, executive producer Bryan Fuller is already committed to another series called American Gods for Starz. If a new distributor could be found, they would presumably have to wait for him to become available.
While some have hoped that Netflix might save the show, it seems that’s not an option. There’s already a streaming deal in place with Amazon and it’s understood that that deal precludes deals with other streaming services.
If Hannibal has indeed been cancelled for good, Fuller says that the third season finale could serve as both a season and series finale.
What do you think? Do you like the Hannibal TV show? Would you watch a fourth season via Amazon’s video service? Or, should it stay cancelled?
I am incredibly sorry to hear the news that NBC’s Hannibal series has been cancelled. What an amazingly great show and cast! Thursday night was definitely NOT the right time slot for a show of this nature; it’s a Friday or Saturday night psychological horror/thriller show. I hope Amazon or Netflix (do reconsider your position on this matter) are smart enough to pick it up. It definitely lends itself well to binge watching. Most importantly, Thanks to all for the gift of great Art & Acting these past three seasons. For those of us hooked on the show, you will… Read more »
We love the show. As a former homicide investigator I find it fascinating and would have loved to investigate crime where the mind is everything. The psychological component and the creative nature of the show are addicting! Please keep it going through his capture and then wrap it up.
You will not find better acting or direction in any other show around. This show has to continue.
I was extremely disappointed to hear Hannibal will not be renewed. We loved the dialog, the vocabularly used during the conversations between the actors was much more advanced and over all more intellectual than any television show that we are aware of. For us it was a delightful treat, totally impeccable. Each episode was like a Chess game. We also appreciated the characters would “listen” to what the other character was saying to them and then “think about what the other person said” not appearing as if they were waiting to speak their next line. Every word was chosen with… Read more »
I’m very upset that they cancelled the show Some of the best shows ever, the moody scenes or how it sets you up in to thinking of what is going on so damn fun and all done with exquisite filming. I’m so trapped into the story line wondering what’s really going to happen to Will nothing else matters. I did enjoy Lawrence kicking the crisp out of Mads very rewarding to see and with a fleck of hope But seriously it’s great TV and how could the ratings be great in the summer time? But maybe that’s what you want… Read more »
Yes. I love the show
My friend and I absolutely LOVE this show. It’s one of only two shows I actually keep up with. I love the way it is filmed, the deep characterization, the themes… I love that it doesn’t spell everything out for you at every moment. You have to wait and watch for things to unfold – it’s not about instant gratification but is full of surprises. If only shows like this were more popular instead of the bachelorette et al. I would definitely watch on netflix.
This show is too intelligent for the masses (unfortunately people are just not well enough equipped with an attention span that can move beyond simple plot lines)…Hannibal has been the best show on television for the last two years and does not disappoint in the third season.
I won’t be watching it. Never started.
Then why reply at all?
Cool. Sharing this article on affimity.com
My husband & i watched the first season out of curiosity as we totally enjoyed all the books & subsequent films; however, it was terribly difficult to follow the show as Mads Mikkelsen was not miked very well so he was very hard to understand, thereby throwing off each episode. He was excellent in “Casino Royale” (2006) which makes it all the more incomprehensible that the producers did not know this from any preview audiences. Since that initial season, we stopped watching completely as we lost interest due to that issue. Therefore, it makes no difference what they do to… Read more »
I am so confused but still hooked I want it to continue and do it at the slower needed pace that will need another season
I am addicted to this show. I was wondering how long they can keep the story line going, but as long as possible is perfect for me. I hope it can be picked on regular tv, it’s a shame the ratings were low, this show is for a select refined audience.
I have watched Hannibal frequently, but it is hard to follow the plot. I wasn’t planning on watching next year if it was on. It is too dark of a plot and sometimes I couldn’t actually figure what was going on. That is always the problem of a show that has too complicated of a plot. If people can’t follow along, they will get bored with a series. NCIS, NCIS New Orleans and Criminal Minds have plots that you can follow along with. Also each show stands on it’s own and they don’t have a basic single plot of the… Read more »
Hannibal isn’t that difficult to follow plot wise. You do have to pay attention, pause it for bathroom breaks. It isn’t as easy to follow along as the shows you named, those shows are all written from a formula that you have seen a million times, so if you step away for a minute you know exactly where the are when you get back. Act 1 Crime presents itself Act 2 Initial investigation Act 3 Interrogation of best suspect (almost always not the perpetrator) Act 4 Forensics or emotional breakthrough (either the kooky goth forensic tech with a heart of… Read more »
Yes! I would continue to watch Hannibal on Amazon! I love this show. The networks always take off the good shows, if the ratings are low. So, those of us who get hooked on these shows lose out and they usually put another dumb reality show on in its place!
I would continue to watch Hannibal! Soo disappointed that it’s cancelled. I isn’t an “easy” show to watch but it’s totally intriguing!
