The future looks bright for many of ABC’s Wednesday night sitcoms. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Mr. Sunshine. The mid-season replacement series has been cancelled after one season.
Mr. Sunshine follows the life of the Manager of Operations at San Diego’s Sunshine Center sports arena, Ben Donovan (Matthew Perry). His job isn’t easy nor made any easier by his crazy boss (Allison Janney), marketing director (Andrea Anders), crazy new assistant (Portia Doubleday), best friend (James Lesure), or his boss’ less-than-skilled son (Nate Torrence).
The sitcom got off to a strong start with a 3.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.52 million viewers. Unfortunately, the TV series lost 30% of its audience demo in week two and another 15% in week three. Future episodes went up and down a bit but also experienced a couple of serious declines. The May 30th installment registered a truly horrible 1.4 demo rating with just 4.02 million viewers.
The nine episodes that aired averaged a 2.2 rating in the demo and 6.02 million viewers, making it ABC’s lowest-rated sitcom.
To no surprise, ABC has cancelled Mr. Sunshine after one season. Only nine of the 13 episodes have aired and the sitcom left the schedule back in early April. There’s no word on if ABC plans to ever air the remaining four episodes. ABC has released their summer schedule plans and the leftover installments of Mr. Sunshine don’t appear to be a part of them.
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a second season for Mr. Sunshine? Why do you think the sitcom failed?

I live outside US… I love this show. Don’t know why it’s canceled. Very fresh comedy and each character is great. Very disappointed that ABC decided to cancel it. At least release the last 4 episodes?
This was the only show I watched on ABC. Now, I watch NOTHING on ABC.
I agree that the show seemed to take off after the first couple of episodes. People didn’t hang around for it to get better though.
Is there any hope of changing their minds over at ABC? Should we mail them a bunch of sunshine faces? Sad sunshine faces? 🙁
I wished they’d at least air the missing episodes this summer.
I m really bummed that abc would cancel this series. It was a great show, and I love Matthew Perry. This why you can’t watch anything on ABC, the minute you start like something they cancel it. Shame on you ABC!!
i really looked forward to seeing this show because of matthew perry and the fact that it was a sitcom. all the other shows they continually try ram down our throats are no good at all. television had taken a turn for the worst years ago and i can see they dont intend to change that.
I am disappointed at ABC for not renewing Mr. Sunshine. The jingle still plays in my head “yeah”. It was funny, and Matt was great, the rest of the cast was hilarious too. Such a shame. Finally a smart comedy I could look forward to.
You two obviously have no sense of humor. Forced jokes, unfunny writing….you two are *****. Yes the show started off needing more humour but after the third episode they had something really good. As for ABC cancelling them so quickly, I think they were on some kind of bender and were more concerned about keeping their large salaries and bonuses rather than taking a chance on this show like was done with Friends. I for one will begin to boycott ABC shows…then again the remaining shows that werent cancelled suck it big time anyways!!!!!!!!!!
This show was just bad. Forced jokes and unfunny writing. I saw the first three or four episodes but that was more than enough of it. They shouldn’t have aired it in the first place.
guys not to offend anyone…but the show sucked.. i tried hard to like it cuz of Mathew Perry but it was just a drag and not snappy and witty at all..
Now that marijuana is almost legal..I am sure the ABC guys are taking heaps of it,cancelling Mr.Sunshine..GEEZ what were you thinking???????

Stupid morons cancelling such a great show. When friends started, its rating also dropped for a while in the beginning. That doesnt mean it should have been cancelled. When a sitcom starts you should give it time to grow, make its goodwill and not childishly scrape it off.
I hope all the dumb ABC employees who did this should get fired so that they get a taste of their medicine.
MR. SUNSHINE WAS A GREAT SHOW!!! BRING IT BACK!!!!!!
It was a rare refreshing comedy without the annoying “canned” laughter after every line. They should at least air the rest of the episodes at a low-ratings time, say 3 at night.
Tisk, tisk ABC! I loved this show and to see the return of both Matthew Perry and Allison Janney was great. The show was witty, fun, smart, and great, an uncommon combination in television!
I am also very upset! It was one serial in this year which came into my notice. For me “Mr. Sunshine” is indeed funny and original and it is a crime to canceled it((
The only reason I watch ABC- Mr. Sunshine and DWTS. Guess I won’t be looking at those wonderful products from ABC’s advertisers. I’m so back to cable TV.
