Last week, CBS renewed 11 TV shows for the 2016-17 season. Supergirl was not among them. With declining ratings, should the Monday night series be renewed for a second season on CBS? Should it be cancelled instead? Moved to The CW?
Supergirl revolves around Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist). As a girl, she survived Krypton’s destruction by being sent to Earth where she was raised as a human. She kept her powers a secret and now, as an adult, works as an assistant at a big city media conglomerate. Kara’s existence becomes known to the world and she is enlisted by a super-secret agency to help protect the citizens from evil forces as Supergirl. The rest of the cast includes Calista Flockhart, Chyler Leigh, Mehcad Brooks, David Harewood, and Jeremy Jordan.
The ratings for this freshman series have not exactly been “super”. After a positive start back in October, the latest ratings are less than half of the premiere’s. It’s currently averaging a 1.73 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.9 million viewers. Last week’s episode hit a new low with a 1.29 in the demo with 6.0 million. Those are poor numbers for a CBS show.
CBS head Les Moonves recently said that he expected several of the new CBS shows to be renewed for second seasons. Still, they haven’t been renewed yet and things can change quickly in the TV industry, particularly as the network execs review pilots for next season.
Tonight’s crossover with CW’s The Flash should bring a bump in the ratings but that’s not expected to help the next week’s new installment’s numbers and there are only two more episodes in this season.
Given the ratings, Supergirl probably shouldn’t be renewed for a second season on CBS. The series could work well on The CW but that might mean that the show’s budget would have to be downsized and production moved to Vancouver, British Columbia — where Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow are produced.
What do you think? Do you think Supergirl should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Should it move to The CW or stay on CBS?
Supergirl series should be renewed for a second season.
The writers need to do better for the second season. I’m a huge fan of this show but it should be mentioned that this show has too many problems with its first season. It has such great potential but if there are more seasons to come in the future, they need a strong over-arching story and a better villain for each season instead of this “freak of the week” thing. Also James Olsen is the most boring character I have seen on TV for a long time…… He and Kara does not have a single drop of chemistry. Also they… Read more »
mahybe the show should move to the cw with all those crossoevers with flash; arrow; legends of tomorrow. maybe the show would be more interesting
It’s a shame that current rating system isn’t updated enough to take in digital streaming rates as well. Supergirl has one of the highest streaming rates on CBS site. especially on the 2nd day when it’s open for CBS’ free episodes. I’ve studied streaming services on multiple channels. Supergirl’s come up really high for streaming and reoccurring streaming. To say Supergirl isn’t doing well is not a fair judgement. TV is no longer the only source for watching a show. The crowds this show is hitting is also leaning toward younger generations. I’m amazed it can already bring in 6-8… Read more »
I have watched every episode at least twice. This is my favorite show. I’ve loved Sypergirl since the early 60’s. Hoping Streaky is in the pod, and hope the program moves to CW for more crossovers.
It’s best for Supergirl to stay on CBS for better budget. CBS is the big league so to obtain their standard of “high rating” can be harder. However, if Supergirl can thrive in big league, it’s much better for its future. CW channel isn’t doing so hot. That’s why CW renew most stuff they have even shows like Crazy Ex Girlfriends, which only bring in 0.8 million viewers weekly. Supergirl brought in 6-8 millions viewers weekly and is worried about renewal. You see the difference in standard? The worst Supergirl’s episode is still doing 3x better than Flash. And like… Read more »
You have a point on crazy x, but if you think Supergirls worst ratings are better than the Flash, then you are uninformed about the ratings regularly put up by the Flash.
Well i do like the show. It has some very lessons about life, love, family. Most people are moving from big channels to Internet provided service like netflix. Keep it and make your viewers happy
How are we suppose to know what was in the pod, if it’s not renewed? I don’t care what channel it plays on, it’s a great family show. I’m 60 and love it.
So what was in the pod? It is a pink slip for this show. Horrible writers and they could have found a better looking actress to play Super Girl. Ratings don’t lie.
Keep it on CBS and renew it. Don’t move it to cw no
Super girl is the best show on TV and nothing compares to it, is better than, Shield by far has a big following and fan base.Don’t make the mistake you almost did to Star Trek and saved by Lucille Ball,if she was here now she would love this show and it give the girls and women and men a super hero they can have to look up to.God bless this show love it
This has probably been my favorite new show this season. It’s unfortunate that the ratings are low in cbs. I don’t care for the cw adaptations of other heroes and fear supergirl would suffer, but that could be simply because flash and green arrow aren’t very compelling characters out of the gate. Hopefully cbs will give this super-well-cast show another chance.
please renew Supergirl and keep it on CBS
I like Supergirl please renew it and keep it on CBS
This is a good show. It may not be a deep drama nor a series with a deep moral massage however a show with some heroes and simple message is just fun.
Please renew! My 11and 6 year old wait in anticipation for family super girl night! It’s a show we enjoy as a family! It’s wonderful to have a show that we all can watch and enjoy together from age 6-41!!!
Please Renew !
Definitely renew I love Supergirl show
