CBS has pulled the plug on one of their family comedies but it’s not the one you’d expect. They haven’t cancelled The McCarthys yet but have dropped The Millers after four airings into its second season.
Set in Leesburg, Virginia, The Millers follows a local TV news reporter (Will Arnett) who’s been hiding his recent divorce from his parents. When they hear the news, his dad (Beau Bridges) his mom (Margo Martindale) are inspired to separate and each move in with their kids. The rest of the sitcom’s cast includes J.B. Smoove, Jayma Mays, Nelson Franklin, Lulu Wilson, and Sean Hayes.
Debuting last fall, The Millers aired on Thursday nights and greatly benefitted from having The Big Bang Theory as a lead-in. The comedy’s ratings were very good — but a large percentage of viewers tuned out between the two programs. It averaged a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 10.9 million viewers.
This season, CBS moved the sitcom to Monday nights where it has 2 Broke Girls as a lead-in. Despite the addition of Sean Hayes to the cast, it’s been struggling in that timeslot and hasn’t been helping new drama Scorpion. It’s currently averaging a 1.7 rating with 7.28 million — a season-to-season decline of more than 30%.
The cast and crew of The Millers will reportedly finish filming one more episode before shutting down production. A new episode is scheduled for this Monday night but, depending on the ratings, it may be pulled after that. Reruns of The Big Bang Theory performed well in the 8:30pm timeslot before Millers returned.
CBS has the fifth season of Mike & Molly waiting in the wings but will likely wait until after the holidays to give it a proper launch.
It’s been a particularly bad season for new sitcoms thus far. Bad Judge and A to Z were cancelled on NBC while Selfie and Manhattan Love Story have been canned by ABC. Mulaney on FOX is sure to be cancelled and The McCarthys is sure to be dropped by CBS as well. Only ABC’s newbie Black-ish is doing well.
What do you think? Do you like The Millers? Do you think it should have been moved back to Thursdays?
I am so upset that the millers are cancelled. Are you guys crazy bring them back. Best comedy on tv
I love that show I am shocked they are canceling it CBS needs to put it back on why air reruns when you have episodes that have not been seen I am so sick of reality shows that are ridiculous and we need these types of sitcoms to make us laugh come on CBS put it back on.
Please sign to try yo keep The Millers on the air

CBS really screwed up by swapping “The Millers” and “Mom” between Thursday and Monday, as both shows are only in their second seasons and do not have long-established audiences that will follow them to any night. “Mom” gets “The Big Bang Theory” as its lead-in. The Millers gets “2 Broke Girls” as its lead-in. As anyone could have predicted, of course The Millers’ numbers went down a lot. What exactly did CBS think was going to happen? So, because of CBS’ scheduling follies, one of the funniest new comedies to come along in years is gone. Shame on you, CBS.… Read more »
The Millers was one of the funniest shows on TV that I look forward to watching every week. Me and my best frend watch & chat at the same time. Saddened to see this show cancelled. Maybe promoting the change of nights would’ve helped the ratings?
Every time I like a new show like the Millers, CBS I finds a way cancel it, by moving it to ruin the ratings, but continues to push crap reality stuff like Dumb Brother, Cant Survive, or the Unreal Pace. Better yet, lets move the once best drama around CSI to the slot that shows seem to go to die Sundays at 10pm, I so hope to be wrong!!!!
I love the Miller’s and had no idea they moved it to Mondays. Not sure how they expect shows to do well if you are going to keep moving them around. I watch Big Bank Theory and then the Millers on Thursday and wondered what happened to them both. Now 1 is back and you are telling me the other is cancelled. GREAT!
Put it back on Thursday! It did great there! What’s wrong with the nuts at CBS?
I can’t believe that you would cancel The Miller’s. It’s so funny. I love it. If any show needs cancelled it’s THE McCARTHYS. IT SUCKS BIG TIME. IT’S THE WORST SHOW I HAVE EVER TRIED TO WATCH. TURNED IT OFF AFTER FIVE MINUTES.
I totally agree watts. This decision was a hasty move the network TV that is already suffering from poor timing and too much reality BS. Just my opinion of course.
Maybe CBS should have done a better job promoting the return of this show AND the fact that it was on a new night. I watched every episode last season & missed its return this season. If Sean Hayes hadn’t been on Ellen one day, I probably would have never known it had returned & was on a new night. Trying to compete with The Voice & Dancing With the Stars is tough. Move it back to Thursday nights!
I think that CVS now treats these new sitcoms. Like they were step children back in the sixties. No real promotion, no consideration for viewers regarding time slots, and they can basically just think or swim on their own. This is a talented cast with lots of laughs and I think they deserve another chance.
Sink or swim.
Totally agree with you Tracey. Give it a chance back on Thursday. It’s almost impossible to make a go of it with those two shows on at the same time. Big bang theory is their best lead in. Save The Millers!!!
I never found The Millers particularly funny. Perhaps the studio and ‘on the scene’ scenes, but the family scenes were not. The addition of Sean Hayes was the death knell for me.
i rally like the nmillers and i tlhink u shoud put it back on thursdays after big bang and see how it does i really like that show and i like the mccarthys too
i think you should try to move millers back on to thursdays i rally love t heat show and look forward to watching it evry night i also am glad u canedl selfie and lvoe story i do like a to z i hope that stys and i do think the mccarthys are funny too
You don’t cancel a wedding over a seating chart-you make it work! I think The Millers is a great show, a wonderful cast, with engaging story lines. It’s too bad that network tv is so caught up in the commercials and ratings that it’s not willing to give a show that could be one of their greats a chance.
I love The Miller’s. The Miller’s is one of the few sitcoms that I watch. I am very disappointed that it is cancelled. I hope that CBS will bring it back.
