The Resident is adding another big name to its cast. Andrew McCarthy is joining the FOX medical drama for the current fifth season, and there is a chance he will become a series regular for season six if the show is renewed. The actor is best known for his roles in classic movies like Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire but has also directed episodes of shows like New Amsterdam, The Sinner, and Good Girls (which he also acted in).
Deadline revealed the following about McCarthy’s role in the series:
“McCarthy will play Dr. Ian Sullivan, a brilliant pediatric surgeon with endless charm that masks a hidden streak of narcissism. He’s a larger-than-life hero to his young patients, but has a complex relationship with his own daughter.”
Starring Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greenwood, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Jane Leeves, Anuja Joshi, Jessica Lucas, and Miles Fowler, the FOX series follows the staff of a fictional hospital in Atlanta.
This news comes as it has been reported that Emily VanCamp is returning to appear on the season five finale of The Resident. Her character died on an episode earlier this year. She will appear in flashback scenes with Czuchry, per TV Line.

I absolutely love this show I laughed cried got angry and sad with some cast members that lefted but I would love a season six

One of my favorite shows. The show is sad at times, but manages to pick itself up by the bootstraps and move forward.

I love Emily playing on the show and miss her character, Nic on there. Here’s a plot twist..bring a 6th season with Nic having an identical twin that was somehow kidnapped or adopted at birth. LOL.. I know, wishful thinking.
I am hooked. Love all the characters. New love interest for Mat rather than present characters. If Cade had been the heart recipient to explain 2 year absence from work, that would have made things very interesting. The eyebrows are annoying.

The Resident is one of the best Shows on tv. Having a season 6 would be great. Having Emily come back for one episode would only remind us of how much we miss seeing her on the show. But I won’t complain, bring her on.
