Last week, the FOX network debuted a new reality TV series called Buried Treasure. Will this one be a goldmine for the network like American Idol or dead weight that will be quickly cancelled?
Buried Treasure follows twin brothers and appraisers Leigh and Leslie Keno as they visit people’s homes. Appearing as appraisers on the PBS series Antique Roadshow, the “treasure hunters” help people discover that some of the items in their homes may be worth a lot more than they know. For example, the old cabinet that was your grandmother’s might be worth enough to wipe out your credit card debt or pay for your kid’s college education. Viewers also get to see how these discoveries affect the owner’s lives.
The TV show debuted last Wednesday to a very disappointing 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 3.67 million viewers. It ranked fourth in its timeslot, well behind CBS’ Big Brother, NBC’s Minute to Win It, and a repeat of ABC’s The Middle. Buried Treasure is currently the lowest-rated FOX series of the summer schedule.
By running Buried Treasure in the middle of summer, FOX obviously doesn’t have a lot of faith in the show and, based on the ratings, it doesn’t look like they were off base. Still, they aren’t pulling the series and are instead adding encores to the schedule for added exposure. This Wednesday’s original installment will be followed by a repeat of the premiere. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to help.
Coming from ITV Studios, only four episodes of Buried Treasure have been produced. It seems likely that FOX will air them all but there’s simply no reason for the network to order any more.
But, what do you think? Is Buried Treasure worth watching? Would you renew it for another season or should it be quickly cancelled instead?

Sorry that Buried Treasure is not going to be allowed to stay. I feel that for one they never gave it a chance since I was just lucky to stumble by it. I can though that it was annoying that waiting for the punchline to see if what was found was valuble or not and cut to a commercial and then to have to go all the awy through the process to get to it was grading on my nerves. I do not think that this show had good direction. If it did coupled with good promotion that it could… Read more »
Found this show by accident and loved it! The Keno brothers were always my favorite on Antiques Roadshow and to see them showcased like this, was amazing. There were moments that actually brought tears to my eyes (when the family who needed $100,000 for medical school for their son found they had a vase worth that much, or the older gentleman dying of cancer was able to find objects of worth to leave money to his son). I am keeping my fingers crossed FOX does not cancel this show. The networks don’t give shows a chance anymore (look back at… Read more »
I really love this show and was truly disappointed when I found that it wasn’t going to be on the Fox Network’s regular schedule! Please don’t cancel before giving it a chance to hit it’s stride. It just seems incredibly short-sighted to make a final decision on a production based on only four not-so-well-promoted outings. If it doesn’t work as a weekly program for an entire season, perhaps it would fit as a wonderful alternative for 12 or 16 weeks throughout spring and summer rather than endless reruns of regular shows. There are lots of armchair treasure hunters out there… Read more »
I love this show! I agree it wasn’t properly promoted or given a chance to build a following. Would like to see more! Many of my friends are now watching the show on demand as they did not know about it either. If Fox drops it, hopefully another smart network will pick it up
PLEASE KEEP THIS SHOW !
The show is excellent! Definitely keep it – we chose this over The Middle and would continue to do so. Just advertising it better – create some hype with the right demographics and you’ll have a winner!
Please keep the show, it’s great!
The Keno’s know what they are doing and it’s worth keeping it on the air!
Give it a bit more time at least!
Yes, please keep it on for a season. I loved it. It’s a great mix of education and entertainment. Any new show’s rough around the edges. Give them a month or so to work everything out.
Please keep the show. A little history lesson never hurt anyone. It does need some refinement in the editing. Viewers can spot fake drama a mile away. We don’t need a mini-cliff hanger every 2 minutes. Advertisement and Development departments need to contact school districts to collaborate and educate kids about appraisals and history. (For instance students can log in online and participate in the appraisal process during the show). Listen, we are talking about cultural identity and education at stake! Otherwise, this show is excellent.
I LOVE THIS SHOW “BURIED TREASURE” – You can’t cancel it – give people a chance to watch it. It is equally as good as “Antiques Road Show”
PLEASE KEEP THIS SHOW ON AND GIVE IT A CHANCE.
I was all set to watch “Buried Treasure” later this evening and I can’t find it. Has it moved to another night or station. I really like the show.
I truly enjoyed the show. I love Antiques Roadshow, so why not? I don’t usually watch reality shows. But appraisals are different than games or singing or dancing. Keep it!
love the show more then any historically based reality tv show. Im 32 yrs of age and have always been an antique roadshow fan. im very sad and appalled to hear that the show is being canceled after only four episodes. Viewers would rather watch jersey shore then buried treasure just seems totally absurd. I’d rather turn my tv off then watch a bunch of clowns dance arnd and make fools of themselves . i might sound over the top but the world doesnt deserve the keno brothers nor the rich history for which our planet was built from.
Sorry we did not know about Buried Treasure until a week ago. Our entire family, including grandchildren watched it and loved it. Sad to say it is not on tonight’s schedule. We think you did not promote it enough and slipped it into a summer schedule when no one was paying it any attention. As for the competition on other channels, sorry I do not watch any of the other channels at this particular time. You did a huge disservice to Buried Treasure in handling it the way you did. The Keno Brothers are fun to watch and very interesting.… Read more »
