CBS has just released details about the two hour finale of Hostages but refer to it as just a “season finale” instead of a “series finale.” Does that mean that the “limited series” is coming back for a second season?
On Hostages, Toni Collette plays Ellen Sanders, a doctor who’s set to perform a fairly rudimentary surgical procedure on the President (James Naughton). When a group of men (led by Dylan McDermott) invade her home and take her family hostage, she’s faced with a lose-lose decision. If she doesn’t cause the President to die on the operating table, the terrorists will kill her family. The cast also includes Rhys Coiro, Billy Brown, Sandrine Holt, Tate Donovan, Quinn Shephard, and Mateus Ward.
The Monday night drama got off to a mediocre start in the ratings, drawing a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.41 million total viewers. In week two, the numbers fell more than 16% and they’ve essentially kept falling ever since. Last month, it hit a new low with a 1.0 demo rating and 4.5 million viewers.
The network touted Hostages as a “limited series” from the start but, had the show been a success, they surely would have found a way to bring it back in some form.
How? Well, we don’t need to worry about that. Unfortunately for fans of the show, there’s virtually no chance that CBS will bring Hostages back next year. The ratings are just too low.
Hopefully, the producers knew the show won’t be back and have prepared a very satisfying ending.
[Possible Spoiler:] The two-hour season (series) finale airs on January 6th at 9pm. The episodes are titled “Suspicious Minds” and “Endgame” and are described this way: “After Duncan discovers Sandrine’s betrayal, he decides to use her to save Nina and Sawyer. Also, just before Ellen is to operate on the President, the First Lady confronts her and forces Ellen to tell the truth about the assassination plot.”
What do you think? Do you like Hostages? Do you think it should be brought back somehow? Why do you think that more people didn’t tune in?
I liked the show and The Blacklist, taped both and loved the actors, totally was hooked from the first show? Sorry to see it go, if it does but not sure where it could go from there?
How could they possibly bring it back? Who would they take hostage next? And why? They wrapped it up tighter than a drum.
I really like Hostages and The Blacklist. It is a shame that they share the same time slot. When there is two really good shows on at the same time, one should not have to be cancelled. Maybe instead of CBS cancelling Hostages, just change the day of week for the show. Wouldn’t that work?
I love the show have watched it from the first episode to the last which I might say was great. They have to bring the show back I need to know what happens to the wife.
My family loved hostages!! It’s a shame another great show is scrapped! I think the reason more didn’t toon in is because of the time slot!
Hostages was excellent, great acting, great storyline. Every week couldn’t wait to see what happened next. Tonight’s back-to-back episodes were amazing. I figured by the storyline that it would be just one season. It was like one long movie. I think that’s fine. It is what it is.
I record EVERYTHING so I can zip through the commercials so I didn’t see having to make a choice. I think Hostages is better than The Blacklist … but now I’ll just be watching The Blacklist. Really fun to see Dylan McDermott and Toni Collette and their on screen chemistry.
I watched every episode and would love to see the show make a second season. Why did more people not tune in? With football season and other popular shows vying for Monday night slots, Hostages was late to the game. At the beginning of this tv season, I only watched Castle during the Monday 10(Revolution was Monday but they moved to Wednesday). Now, there is The Blacklist, Hostages, and it appears Intelligence. All are going to be in the same slot. That doesn’t count shows in the 8 or 9 slots on Monday. I mean, whether you think the show… Read more »
I absolutely loved Hostages. I wish they would have a second season!
I believe the show was very good and there where episodes in the first few weeks that well we’re not very good and slow moving. However for those of us the stuck with it learned that it turned out to be pretty good. But I agree there was shows is could not compete with especially if you don’t have DVR. The ending was awesome. But I don’t think they will bring it back. However they could do one of 2 things have a spin off with a new name new and old characters. Or same show completely different characters in… Read more »
It was my favorite show all season. I wish there was a way to bring it back. I really feel it would work because many of us were waiting for Duncan And the Doctor, herself to get together. The producers could build up another whole fifteen episodes on that alone. The spark between them was obviously there. Viewers like to see the tension of that type of relationship building.
I loved the show. If it hadn’t been up against Blacklist I believe it would have done better. I know a lot of people watched it OnDemand. I will miss it!
Loved the show and I’m really disappointed they are not bringing it back.
Its a great show but being put up again NBC’s The Blacklist was just too much to overcome. I watched intently through the season, but only by DVR… The Blacklist was way more appealing to me. I am sad to see that they are not bringing it back as it was a GREAT show and I don’t want to see the end! BRING IT BACK!!!! I LOVED IT!
I watched the first show. It felt like a premise that would be better suited to a 2 hour movie…….not a tv series. I also watched The Blacklist and Castle ……….with two channels to pick, those both won out.
LOVED “HOSTAGES”—-hope it continues—fast moving—with lots of plots within the story line.
I think it’s a really good show, but couldn’t contend with The Blacklist. Also there are many viewers (like myself) who watch The Blacklist and DVR Hostages or catch it OnDemand…those viewers are simply unaccounted for and thus ratings are negatively skewed.
Vanessa you couldn’t have been anymore correct. In my household that is exactly what we do, watch The Blacklist and view Hostages later. It was a good show. Good finale as well.
