What’s next for The Knick? Creator Steven Soderbergh recently spoke with Indiewire about his plans for the next two seasons of Cinemax’s acclaimed historical drama.
Season two of The Knick just ended on December 18th.
In the interview, Soderbergh said the next season could be “radically different” from the two before:
I told them that I’m going to do the first two years and then we are going to break out the story for seasons 3 and 4 and try and find a filmmaker or filmmakers to do this the way that I did. This is how we want to do this so that every two years, whoever comes on, has the freedom to create their universe.”
Though the series has yet to be officially renewed, Cinemax has ordered a script for the first episode of season three and a rough outline already. For the next season, Soderbergh says he wants to invite new filmmakers to make what they want of the historical series about an early 20th c. hospital in New York City.
They don’t have to shoot it the way I shoot it. They don’t have to score it the way I score it. They don’t have to cast who I’ve cast. They have maximum freedom to come in and just go, ‘I want to wipe the slate clean.’”
Currently, Soderbergh has his slate full. The director is working on The Girlfriend Experience, an upcoming series for Starz based on his 2009 film of the same name.
So, what’s next for The Knick? We’ll just have to wait. Soderbergh says if there is a new season, it won’t air until at least 2017.
What do you think? Are you a fan of The Knick? Did you watch the season two finale? Do you think there should be another season?
Yes yes yes!!! I love this show!
I sure as heck want to see another season of the knick. I like the specificity of detail to era medicine practices. The detail to how the health dept came to be. The people coming to America through Ellis Island. It does take dramatic license but seems accurate to the date of my profession of Nursing, and how it developed into what it is today. The balls those surgeons had to try surgery’s with such archaic equipment. I love the people interaction story lines. Please bring it back. Please.
Just hope it is better than this Season. LOVED the first, but the second was BORRRRRRING as hell and so highly predictable with multiple, uninteresting, seriously flawed and repetitive story lines.
I luuuuvvvvvv this show!! Yes I spelled love that way on purpose to emphasize how I much I luuuvvv this show. Watching how medicine was taught at that time and how it has evolved is amazing. The writers are great and who ever casted this show did an excellent job. I am just smitten with Andre Holland. Please bring this show back, same cast but if you need to add do so, but keep the original cast.
This is just lazy bull ****. You start to love a show then they
Pull this on you.mad men was a two year wait for finale season.
I love the characters in the knick, but this change of everything is craziness.
Won’t watch again.
I’ve watched both seasons and have truly enjoyed them. The storylines are robust and I’ve grown attached to each character. Knive Owens is an incredible actor who leaves me waiting with baited breath each week for more. Why on earth would you tamper with this #winning formula, the writers, camera men. It’s not broken so why try to fix it??? I dont watch a lot of television but this series has me and my circle of friends just as addicted as Dr. Thackery!
I LOVE this show. I teach a college course on 19th century medicine and this show is full of historical references. The development of the characters has been fantastic – I have really come to love and hate many of them. I hope I don’t have to wait until 2017 for the next season.
Too bad. That won’t work. Sounds as though Steven is just keeping the possibility of a future income stream open. He’ll sell the show, keep an executive Producer title and let someone else succeed or (probably) fail. Boo…hiss.
Can’t they just write and produce a nice show and enjoy it! I loved the first season and season 2 is just as great! Why screw with a winning formula?
Definitely feel there should be a Season 3 and 4. Being a former New Yorker I feel there is much more story to tell.
Not sure if that approach will work after True Detective trying the same thing.
Didn’t True Detective season 2 fail because it didn’t do this?
